I've got to say, I'm not a fan of traditional "American Cuisine" at all. Most is too heavy and makes my arteries hurt just thinking about it.

I read you will be in California in a different thread? I LOVE California cuisine.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_cuisine

"The emphasis of California Cuisine is on the use of fresh, local ingredients which are often acquired daily at farmers markets. Menus are changed to accommodate the availability of ingredients in season."

Also see cuisine of California for the various influences too.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuisine_of_California

I have to say, I've travelled to over 20 countries and California definitely has THE BEST produce! So be sure to have lots! Also try the Mexican food!

Someone mentioned chains such as Applebees. I guess go there once for the kitsch factor, but after that, stick with local places that have specialty dishes based out of that area, and you can't go wrong.

Thanks jen, some great stuff here. :)

I'm mostly a fresh produce kinda girl but I admit to a fascination with what Americans have been able to come up with in terms of junk food or even just things like burritos for breakfast  , so I guess I'll mostly be sticking to fresh, simple stuff but haha, there's just some things I have to know about on the junk front. :D It's always fascinated me that some people have bacon and eggs and pancakes for breakfast and that syrup goes all over the lot. I really only need a taste. I'm disappointed I won't be there for Thanksgiving so I can try the marshmallow sweet potato thingy! Which fills me with equal parts fascination and dread! ;):D

I'm sorry but I'm gonna have to veto the fresh oyster suggestion.

If you want some real oysters try the ones off the coast of Belgium or France in the North Sea. Now that is some real oyster!

As far as suggestions, you should go to a nice steak house. Steak in the US is amazing! Also, go get a real burger somewhere.

:D Doesn't matter where the fresh oysters come from for me, I won't be eating another one as long as I live! Kilpatrick, mornay, chilli, whatever as long as they're cooked. Raw just isn't ever passing my lips again. :D

Definitely steak and a real burger. :)

How about a fried snickers bar?
Tasty cakes are little pre-packaged cakes/pies/cupcakes based out of Philadelphia:

Going to be in LA, Seattle and Vancouver mostly this trip. Oh well and a couple of other spots around the globe but they're mostly just stopovers.
I've googled up a pretty good list of things to do and see, was just looking for a spot of local knowledge is all. :)

I'm will one day make it to the South, just not this trip. :)

OK, there's a place i've always wanted to go in L.A. and that's Roscoe's House of Chicken and Waffles....i know, it sounds crazy, but i've heard it's really good. so if you decide to go, let me know how it is. ;)

for a hamburger - In-N-Out, Tommy's (i've heard good things about this place), Red Robin, or Johnny Rockets (you could even get a hot dog there too)

Chicken and waffles sounds perfect! :D Not together on the same plate but yeah, together in the same restaurant sounds just like something I'd like to see. :D

 Deep fried mars bar!!!!

Yeah, not my thing at all really.

Deep fried foods I'm really only loving the seafood, fish in beer batter, scallops and of course potato cakes. :D And who doesn't like chips? :)
But I don't have a lot of them. I'm not big on saturated fats.

So tastycakes is like twinkees? :)

Heeheee well you wanted the experience! :p You need to go to a summer fair and get some fair food! :D They have the deep fried snickers bar, fried cheesecake on a stick, etc. I've still never tried it.

I'm laughing because the first time I went to Prague I saw that they had FRIED CHEESE! In restaurants it is a wheel of brie or other kinds of cheese that the serve with chips/fries. When I first saw it I was shocked! But it wasn't bad...tasted like mozarella sticks. And after a night of drinking at 4am it was a nice option to get fried cheese at the "drunk stands" for super cheap prices. It isn't something you could eat every day though!

I guess if I ate fried cheese then one of these days I should try the snickers ;)

Oh I love fried cheese! Well I make salads in the summer quite often, greek salads with fried haloumi. It's only shallow fried though, and really yummy. Actually it might even be a little "squeaky"!
I used to love deep fried camembert, with a little cranberry sauce. They served that in restaurants quite regularly here for a while. I can't eat that much soft cheese these days though. :(

They are a guilty pleasure :o I like the kandy kakes and the chocolate cupcakes the best...or the pies. I don't really like the krimpets or the juniors - they're just too "cakey" for me :p

  • This would be southern USA food.

Smoked BBQ ribs come to mind. Nothing taste better than a rack of ribs after 12 hours in a smoker. Hell anything smoked on the BBQ down here is good.

The whole fried thing as said. I just had some fried pickle chips last weekend.
Fried catfish is quite a common item down here.

Not sure if it is unique to where I am from but there is a meal called a "Low Country Boil." It is shrimp, potatoes, corn on the cob and sausage all boiled together in a pot. You just drain and dump it out after cooking and everyone just picks at it. Not to high class I suppose but damn it is good.

For desert try a mixed berry pie with berries picked that morning. I usually use raspberries, black berries and strawberries. Sometimes I add blue berries too. Put a scoop of homemade ice cream on a warm slice and it is heaven.

On the southern tip, Strawberry Shortcake.

The strawberries and cream must be on a buttery, flaky biscuit. Not that weird spongecake oddity.
