Charley started choking on something a few hours ago, and my hubby gave him the Heimlich, and Charley was OK. Now he won't leave my side and he's making all these funny noises and won't lie down...it's like he's still panicking...he won't bark at his favourite toys and just pants and pants and pants, despite it being kinda cool in the house....poor lumpkin. I don't know what to do for him...he seems able to eat treats...and Remy's worried about him, which is never a good sign...Crap!

Shit!! Is Charley OK, today? I've got my own sick dog and I know it's stressful :(.

Charley isn't a whole lot better today - thanks for asking! His nose seems completely plugged so we think he might have a cold. He eats OK, and poops OK...he was running around the yard with Remy this AM and jumping to catch the treats I was throwing out the window for him (and remy)....

We got home from work today and the bedroom floor was covered with pools of dog snot and what looked like former puddles of puke...on the bed, on my clothes...some of the snot was green, which indicates some sort of infection. We were thinking kennel cough, but it's not coming from his chest...this is definitely in his head area...perhaps he has a head cold? We're doing our best to keep him quiet, but he has these moments of coughing and gagging and can't seem to catch his breath. If he wasn't being normal otherwise, he'd be rushed to the vet. If he's worse in the AM, we might book a vacay day and take him in anyway. I think dogs get colds...it's been very damp for the past few days..

Otherwise, how's gracie's poo probs.? Sometimes puppies just get the runs for no apparent reason....unless...she wasn't eating buttercups was she? That plant is so poisonous to animals...and she might have drank out of puddle or something...I hope she's OK...

Thanks again for asking about Charley Buckethead....

I called a vet and followed her instructions, but Charley has puked up all the cough medicine we've given him, all the asprin...everything...I've just given him 25mg dramamine (Gravol) and now he's hanging out in the bathroom with a big lot of steam...I'm hoping the gravol will make him sleep...

We're beginning to think that he has myasthenia gravis...and not kennel cough....our Pinky died because of MG (well that, and a stroke)...but the symptoms are all the same...Fuck!! I hope we are very wrong on this...His nose seems blocked...he's puking up tons of mucus still and now he's puking everything we give him....but if we hold up his front legs and have him sit on his hind legs only, the gasping for air and the mucus overload stops. This is EXACTLY like Pinky...This blows...Dammit... And we're supposed to do that SPCA dog walk this weekend....Crap!

Anyway, he's going to the vet first thing AM

Well look what was in my yahoo inboxxx:

    Adult
What’s the best way to give my dog a pill?

Getting your pooch to take medicine prescribed by your veterinarian can be tricky, but there are some ways to get the medicine down the hatch more easily. Next time you have to give your pet a pill, try one or more of these proven methods:

    * Crush the pill and stir in with food or a treat. Ask your vet before doing this to be sure it won't interfere with how the medicine works.

    * Coat the pill with butter, cream cheese, or peanut butter to make it slide down easily.

    * Ask your veterinarian about a pill pusher or a pill gun.

    * Look for a new product called pill pockets. These are soft and hollow treats that are designed with a pocket that conceals the medicine.

    * Just like fruit-flavored aspirin or vitamins now available for children, pills and liquids can be flavored by pharmacists to taste like your pup's favorite meat. Just ask your pharmacist.

If your dog is sick and not eating, try holding your pet in a towel, cradled like a baby, or straddle him from behind. Flick the pill to the back of its throat. Then rub his throat, an action that will urge him to swallow.

I about cried, picturing poor Charley :(. Looks like we're both going to the vet this morning. I had to work overnight (I'm still here) so I don't exactly know how Gracie is doing. I'm heading home in half an hour. Hopefully, both our dogs are doing better. We'll be thinking of Charley!!!

  • Awwww so cute - I loved the one in the sweater! LOL I grew up with a wire-haired Jack Russell who was my best friend as a child, and even though I am really not a small dog person, I have a soft spot for these guys.

OH....MY.....GOD!!! While Gracie is recuperating, I was just watching the ER Vet Intern show on Animal Planet. There was a Great Dane puppy who got into rat poison. He went from bad to worse. They were doing CPR and even using the paddles. He didn't make it :(

The big, strong owner was bawling; I was bawling; it was freaking awful!!! Man, these four-legged things can take a hold of your heart.

I sure hope Charley is OK. I'm not sure about Gracie, but she should be fine. She finally got to eat again, after 36 hours. Our vet gave her some bland (but expensive) food. No barf, but also no poop to check yet :o.

Took Charley to the vet today - and he spent all day there. They did x-rays, blood work, the whole nine yards....Total bill $600....getting Charley to stop puking - priceless...

Anyway, he has brochitis and has been shot full of antibiotics and anti-inflammatories. No food until tomorrow AM. Pepto Bismal in case he starts puking again. Blood test results tomorrow should be in for heart worm, or cryptococcus...Can't rule out kennel cough either. But at least now we have his coughing under control. He's moaning and snoozing off and on. Hasn't coughed since we got him home (nor puked!)...poor guy...

Because Remy has been exposed to him and his possible kennel cough (only if everything else has been ruled out) in addition to the bronchitis - there will be no SPCA Paws for a Cause for them this year. I'll try to borrow a friend's dog. Or, I'll drop off all the $$ for my local walk...and then take the mutts to the larger one in Victoria one on September 14th...

Arrgghh...Still, I love my puppies and will do whatever I can to keep them well and make them better when they are ill...

    Thanks for your support...
