JAGR, SHANAHAN HONORED FOR 600 CLUB MEMBERSHIP
Jaromir Jagr and Brendan Shanahan celebrated their 600th goals in a pregame ceremony with a distinguished group of guests made up of NHL legends and family members.
12/19/2006
One month to the day after captain Jaromir Jagr scored the 600th goal of his NHL career, the Rangers organization officially honored both Jagr and assistant captain Brendan Shanahan for becoming the first NHL teammates to reach No. 600 in the same season.
In a special ceremony prior to Tuesday night's game against the Islanders, Jagr and Shanhan were brought to center ice, where they were greeted by their entire families as well as fellow 600-goal scorers Mark Messier, Mario Lemieux and Steve Yzerman.
The rare gathering of five of the 16 players who have scored 600 goals in the NHL came as a complete surprise to both Shanahan and Jagr. Long in the planning, the purpose of the ceremony was also kept a secret from Rangers fans, who were merely advised to be in their seats or in front of their television sets promptly at 7 p.m.
Among those taking part in the ceremony were Jagr's parents, Jaromir and Anna, who flew in from the Czech Republic, and Shanahan's mother, Rose, who came in from her home in Ontario, Canada. Shanahan's wife and three children were also on the ice, along with Jagr's girlfriend.
Messier, on behalf of the Rangers organization, presented Jagr and Shanahan with engraved silver sticks, commemorating their rare achievement.
The highlight for many fans was a chance to welcome back Messier, who received a thunderous ovation, and to see both Yzerman and Lemieux, two of the greatest players in NHL history. While they were rivals of the Rangers during their playing days, there was no doubt from the crowd's reaction that these were two of the most respected players NHL fans have ever known.
Jagr said he was particularly impressed and touched that Lemieux made the trip up from Pittsburgh to be with him at the event.
"Other than my parents, he was the biggest influence on me in hockey. That is for sure," said Jagr. "I came here at 18 years old and I had my style of hockey and he had his style, and he changed it."
Jagr scored his 600th goal in a Nov. 19 game against Tampa Bay at Madison Square Garden. Shanahan scored No. 600 in the Rangers' season-opener against Washington on Oct. 5.
Jagr and Shanahan are the third and fourth players to score their 600th goals while with the Rangers. Phil Esposito and Mike Gartner also reached the 600 milestone while with the Blueshirts. Five other 600-goal scorers also played for the Rangers but scored their historic goals with other teams. For the ones who had a notion, a notion deep inside

Isbister Replaces Callahan
Brad Isbister has been recalled from Hartford and Ryan Callahan has been sent back down, along with Al Montoya. Par for the course, given Renney's praise for Callahan last night while questioning the battle level of veteran role players of Isbister's ilk. So much for the short-lived Shamrock line of Shanahan, Callahan, and Martin Shamstraka.

wow- look at some of the names,...
December 21, 2006
Resurrection Boulevard
In 1998-99, it was Brent Fedyk, with four goals and six assists in his last 67 games in the NHL. In 1999-2000, it was Kevin Hatcher in his penultimate NHL season. In 2000-01, it was Jeff Toms, Jeff Ulmer, Alexei Gusarov, et.al. In 2001-02, Zdeno Cigar, Dave Karpa, Igor Ulanov, Andreas Johansson. In 2002-03, Ted Donato played his next to last NHL season as a Ranger. And in 2003-04, Boris Mironov closed out his career, another ineffective Ranger veteran. Before that, there was Pat Flatley, Tim Sweeney, Bruce Driver- even some big names like Jari Kurri, Kevin Stevens, Theo Fleury, and even Gretzky and Messier, all playing their waning days as Rangers, shadows of their former selves. And no, we haven't forgotten the likes of Malakhov and Kamensky -- there is just so much room for fond reminiscences such as these.
Over those same years, the Rangers let the likes of Sergei Zubov, Alexei Kovalev, Marc Savard, Kim Johnsson, Mike Knuble, Mike York, and Marek Zidilicky slip away when they were still young, to go on and record their best seasons elsewhere. And they let numerous promising young players wither on the vine behind a host of over the hill veterans who management thought they could resurrect, these young prospects ultimately never amounting to much -- we'll never know what might have happened if they had been handled properly.
Has Broadway become Resurrection Boulevard again for the Rangers? Brad Isbister may not seem like a big deal right now -- if he only replaces Colton Orr and can recapture some of his modest NHL success of the past, then he's worth a look, no? No! He'll come up hungry with something to prove, bang bodies for a few games, maybe get some breaks on the score sheet, and that will give him a free ride for at least the rest of the season while some young prospect remains in Hartford, "not ready yet" for the NHL.
We've heard this song before, even to some extent with other veterans this season, who have gotten long looks while failing to recapture their past successes while younger players plummet down the depth chart, some of them eventually landing in Hartford. We know where this road leads. We don't want to go down that road again. Brad Isbister may not amount to a hill of beans as an important issue, but he is already a symbol of a culture that was supposed to have changed last year, a culture that once again favors underachieving veterans and no-upside retreads over hungry young prospects.
The Rangers head into Florida tonight to start a four-game road trip with illness and injury still causing roster turmoil (see today's newspaper reports in the News, Newsday, Post, and Sam Weinman in the Asbury Park Press, plus the game preview at NYR.com). The Panthers are looking to win their third straight tonight, their fortunes revived by Josef Stumpel moving back to his natural center ice position. They have some injury problems of their own, with Steve Weiss and Juraj Kolnik out tonight, in addition to Todd Bertuzzi's long-term absence. See Florida area reports here, here, and here. In prospect news, the WJC teams began participating in pre-tournament exhibition games -- summary in NYR.com's prospect update. In the Charlotte Observer, notes on the Checkers from Cliff Mehrtens.
