    Not again

I can't believe it happened again. Yet another blown two-goal lead, and yet another injury to a player who was coming along recently.

And after all the nice things the Rangers did over their previous seven games, and even after moving into a playoff position, here they are, tied for tenth in the Eastern Conference, on the outside looking in. Additionally, Karel Rachunek sprained his knee, and will be out for the immediate future. I would anticipate the call-up of David Liffiton to become the sixth D-man for this weekend.

I hate to keep bringing this up, but things will just continue to get tougher. There will be more work for Henrik, there will be more young rookies in the lineup, and the opponents will be more and more desperate with every game that passes.

The Blueshirts have no games today and tomorrow, but on Friday they start another four-game-in-six-days set, including back-to-back matches against Atlanta and then Boston on Saturday. Sunday is an off day, only to have the Penguins march into MSG on Monday and the Flyers on Wednesday. After those games, the Rangers will have only two more home games in the regular season, playing six of their final eight on the road.

I know people complain about "negativity", but how can anyone be optimistic about this team's chances when you watch what happened last night?

    SHANAHAN PRESSING TO RETURN

    By LARRY BROOKS

Brendan Shanahan is wheeled off the ice on a stretcher after being injured in a collision with Philadelphia Flyers' Mike Knuble.March 15, 2007 -- Were it solely up to him, Brendan Shanahan admitted yesterday after skating for the third straight day and practicing with his teammates for the first time since he sustained a concussion on Feb. 17, No. 14 would rejoin the Rangers for their next game, Friday night in Atlanta.

But the call to allow Shanahan to return will be a joint one, surely made with his input, but ultimately in concert with decisions by the club's medical, training and coaching staffs that are looking out for the 38-year-old winger's good even as the Blueshirts are on the outside of the playoffs looking in with 12 games to go.

And so he will have to wait a little bit longer than just one more day.

"Next week is not out of the question," said Shanahan, whose team will follow weekend games against the Thrashers and at home the next night against the Bruins, with matches at the Garden Monday against the Penguins and Wednesday against the Flyers.

"[Within] 10 days is definitely my goal. From the time I first got on the ice [Monday], the thought the best case scenario would be under two weeks. When I first was hurt, I was thinking I'd be back for the playoffs. Then, I was aiming for the last week of the season. Now, I'm hoping it's a little sooner.

"I'm trying to be realistic, but my goal is to be back sooner than expected. I have to keep pressing [the team] to the point where they're confident enough that not only is my head OK, but that I'm not going to come in and blow out a hamstring or a groin," said Shanahan, who has been symptom-free for a week and has been cleared neurologically to return. "I have to please the coaches and training staff.

"It's up to me to pass the Rangers' tests to prove I'm ready."

Shanahan skated on his own on Monday for approximately a half-hour. On Tuesday, he pushed himself through 40 minutes of skating drills conducted and overseen by assistant coaches Perry Pearn and Mike Pelino.

Yesterday he not only participated in a full 45-minute practice session, he remained on the ice to work on shooting and timing for an additional 20 minutes, though he wore the gold jersey signifying he was not allowed contact.

That, though, might change as soon as today.

"Any player who comes back is vulnerable to lasting half a shift. That's their concern and I respect that," said Shanahan, who passed a baseline test (a standard post-concussion test) administered yesterday morning and who will require one more visit to the doctor before he rejoins the lineup. "If it were up to me, would I be back on Friday? Yeah . . . but in their defense, they're right."

    *

Rangers recalled 22-year-old David Liffiton from the AHL Wolf Pack to replace Karel Rachunek, who suffered a sprained right MCL during the first period of Tuesday's 3-2 loss to the Senators. . . . Kevin Weekes took his first full practice with the club since pulling a quadricep muscle on Feb. 13. . . . Tom Renney said that the Blueshirts, who have scored 10 goals in their last six games, "are considering" recalling a forward from Hartford - presumably Nigel Dawes, who would have played last Sunday had Jaromir Jagr been unable to go - for tomorrow's game.

    Shanny Ready

    Shanahan clear he feels ready

    By JOHN DELLAPINA
    DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER
If it were up to Brendan Shanahan, he'd be in the Rangers' lineup tomorrow night in Atlanta.

No, he doesn't need to have his head examined. Fact is, the most recent examinations of his head are what have Shanahan convinced that his return is now a matter of days. The Rangers' heart-and-soul winger could return to the lineup as early as Monday against Pittsburgh or Wednesday against Philadelphia at the Garden.

"The good news is I'm going to be back," Shanahan said after practicing yesterday for the first time since suffering a major concussion on Feb.17. "I can't get too hung up on when they give me the green light to do it. Now, doing what I did today and what I plan to do tomorrow is just me trying to move it up."

On Monday Shanahan went for a light skate on his own then saw a vertigo specialist who could not induce that condition even by turning his patient upside down. He skated to what he called "the point of exhaustion" on Tuesday.

He passed a neurological baseline test administered by Dr. Claude Macaluso yesterday morning and then participated in a 40-minute practice that included some bumping and jostling. And afterward, he said all that remained was to convince Tom Renney and trainer Jim Ramsay that he was fit enough to play in a game.

"I just have to keep impressing these guys enough that they're confident that, not only is my head OK, but that I'm not going to come in because my head is cleared and blow out a hamstring or a groin," Shanahan said. "So I have to kind of please them and meet what our coaching staff and training staff's necessary requirements are as far as skating ability and stuff like that, before they're willing to put me in."

MORE PAIN: Add Karel Rachunek to the injury list. An MRI yesterday revealed a sprained MCL in his right leg, and the defenseman, injured in Tuesday's loss to Ottawa, will be out three to four weeks.

HOLLWEG SUMMONED: Rangers winger Ryan Hollweg has been summoned for an interview by Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice as her office continues to investigate whether Islanders forward Chris Simon should be charged with a crime for hacking Hollweg in the face with his stick during the teams' March 8 game at the Coliseum.

Hollweg was to have met with representatives of Rice's office yesterday but had to postpone because of a case of the flu that also kept him out of practice. The district attorney also wants to interview Ramsay before moving onto Simon and Islanders personnel.

A bright spot in the Rangers' most recent game was Brandon Dubisnky. In his fourth NHL game, Dubinsky had several impressive rushes up the ice, a good scoring chance off a steal inside the Ottawa zone, and generally played an active effective game in nearly ten minutes of ice time. "I got used to the pace," Dubinsky explained about making the adjustment to NHL play. "When that happens, you get more confidence with the puck and your abilities. It's faster, so it takes a little longer to adjust. I feel like I belong here. I feel comfortable playing my game up here just like I would anywhere else."

His coach agreed. "I thought he was good tonight," said Tom Renney. "He's got that ability. He's a confident kid, he can make plays, and he can shoot it. A big thing for Brandon, at this level especially, is to keep his feet moving and not become a spectator -- be in the movie and don't just watch it." Like other rookie call-ups, Dubinsky was initially advised to keep his game simple. His play against Ottawa suggested that he may have been told to step it up a bit. But neither Dubinsky nor Renney attributed his play to any particular advice to do more.

    RANGERS UPBEAT ABOUT SHANAHAN

    By BRETT CYRGALIS
March 16, 2007 -- At Rangers practice, the yellow jersey normally indicates an injured player. But yesterday as Brendan Shanahan donned the bright and unfamiliar No. 47, he looked more like a beacon of hope.

The Rangers' alternate captain has been sidelined since Feb. 17, when he sustained a concussion in a scary collision with the Flyers' Mike Knuble. Since then, the Rangers have been lacking veteran leadership, but have managed to stay afloat with scrappy intensity and great goaltending.

The Rangers and Canadiens are 10th in the East, two points behind the eighth-place Islanders and Hurricanes for the last playoff spot. Last night, the Senators defeated the Islanders, 5-2 and the Devils upended the Hurricanes, 3-2.

The return of Shanahan, an 18-year veteran and 12th all-time in goals (626), is something the Rangers sorely need if they hope to make the playoffs.

"He and I and our medical team all understand that there's a bit of a process here," coach Tom Renney said of Shanahan's return. "Rather than compromise him by putting him out there too early, we have to make sure he's in a position to really help us."

Shanahan's comeback essentially began Saturday, when he skated by himself for the first time since the injury. Another big step came Wednesday, when he took part in full-team practice, which turned into two days in a row yesterday.

When asked if Monday's game vs. Pittsburgh or Wednesday's vs. Philadelphia (both at the Garden) were possible target dates for a return, Renney paused, calmly smiled and responded, "Those are a couple dates that are circled."

And those dates can't come soon enough for the Blueshirts, who travel to Atlanta tonight to play the Thrashers, who are third in the East, have won five in a row at home and are 7-2-1 in their last 10.

The Rangers who will be taking the ice are young and inexperienced, as the laundry list of injuries, which goes deeper than just Shanahan, has forced Renney and GM Glen Sather to make some additional call-ups from Hartford. Likely to play their first NHL games this season are defenseman David Liffiton (second career NHL game) and forward Ryan Callahan (third).

"I always feel I play my best hockey in big games," Liffiton said. "It's exciting to come here and play in games that mean a lot."

And with Shanahan still a couple days away from changing the color of his practice jersey, these games couldn't get any bigger.

Another reason the Rangers left a point on the table was a familiar one: their power play came up empty on six chances. And in a matchup of two of the best penalty-killing teams in the NHL over the last two months, it was the Rangers who broke at the end.

"I have to stay sharp and not allow any mistakes," said Lundqvist. "Hopefully our power play can step up and get some goals."

Henke was fabulous last night- probably the only other thing besides 1 friggin point that we took away from that game.

The bad weather kept the Rangers in Atlanta last night- so theyll most likely be very tired tonight against the Bruins .

C'mon boys string together 60 solid minutes and 2 regulation points,.

    Blueshirt Bulletin

    http://ordinaryleastsquare.typepad.com/blueshirtbulletin/images/2007/03/16/callahanny.jpg

The Rangers did almost everything right last night in Atlanta. They withstood the home team's first period onslaught and even came away with a lead at the first intermission. They withstood four early Atlanta power plays, including a two-man advantage, and then came out forechecking, pressuring, and firing a barrage of shots once they were able to get regular shifts for someone other than their penalty killers (32-12 in shots on goal over the last three minutes of the first period and the rest of the game). Other than the one mistake that led to Atlanta's lone regulation goal, they played sound defensively and got the requisite goaltending from Henrik Lundqvist (with a beautiful save thrown in here and there, especially early on), shutting down the Thrashers' big guns.

Still they lost the game. They lost it for one reason, and one reason alone -- they could not win the game on the power play. And that's exactly what the Thrashers did, cashing in on their overtime power play. Facing one of the worst penalty killing teams in the league, the Rangers kept the puck in the zone, they passed at the right times, they shot at the right times (nine power play shots), they generated traffic in front of Johan Hedberg. They tried the first unit for the entire two minutes a couple of times in the second, and they tried starting the second unit on the crucial advantage they got late in the third period. And still, they couldn't score on the power play.

And you just knew the Thrashers would score on theirs when the game was on the line -- Alexei Zhitnik, who was so bad he was a joke, especially on that early two-man advantage, came through when the game was on the line. No one did for the Rangers. They rarely do. They are now 0-for-19 while going 1-1-2 in their last four(and giving away a point to Carolina in their only win), and 2-for-34 in their last six (with both goals in one game). They are 21-for-120 (17.5%) in 2007, but only 15-for-111 (13.5%) in 2007 aside from back to back wins in which they went 6-for-9. And as we've demonstrated in the past, most of the power play goals they do score come early in games or when games have already been decided, rarely making a difference when the game is on the line.

With Toronto and Montreal losing tonight, plus Carolina and the Isles losing last night, the Rangers inched up by a point against all of their closest playoff rivals. But imagine where they would be right now if, all other problems aside, they had been able to win just a handful of games that they have lost with a timely power play goal, especially given the talent they have at their disposal.

Ryan Callahan played over fifteen minutes of highly effective ice time on the second line with Matt Cullen and Sean Avery, who were both superb in this game as well. He hits, he shoots, he skates -- the guy is a keeper. Brandon Dubinsky's ice time suffered as a result of all the special teams play, but he did well again too. David Liffiton was used sparingly in his second NHL game, his first this season. It appears as if he will be on his way back to Hartford once Jason Strudwick clears waivers and joins the Rangers for the remainder of the regular season (he would be ineligible for playoff games).

The officiating in this game was vexing for both teams. What was called vs. what wasn't called was irreconcilable, both ways. Ultimately, it cost the Rangers, Cullen being called for what was probably a penalty (although the opponent clearly dove, as did Cullen when he drew a penalty in the third period). The vexing part was why Atlanta was not called moments earlier when Avery was being restrained with a stick blade pressed across his numbers pinning him to the boards. But the Rangers had a chance to take advantage of the sorry officiating and take the game when Zhitnik was called for a phantom hold on Jaromir Jagr with less than five minutes left in the third period.

The end result, officiating aside -- the Rangers could not win with their power play, the Thrashers did

and all those people who were crying for re-building
they have to be happy with this lineup

Dubinsky, Pock, Prucha, Liffiton, Giraldi, and Lundqvist .

    how about that .

the futures so bright, i gotta werar shades
