For the first time since his concussion Feb.17, Brendan Shanahan skated with his teammates today at the MSG Training Center.
After 20 minutes skating with the rest of the team, Shanahan skated alone in a series of conditioning drills with assistant coaches Perry Pearn and Mike Pelino. Though there’s still no word on when Shanahan can subject himself to contact, this was still a significant step for a player who had been completely inactive until recently.

"I'll tell you what, this is the last we're talking about it," Islander coach Ted Nolan said yesterday about Chris Simon's hatchet job on Ryan Hollweg. We highly doubt it, though. Not because the media will continue to pursue it, as Nolan went on to say, but because he was already talking about it two days too long himself, unwilling to accept what the rest of the hockey world has already decided, that Simon's action was despicable and that his sentence was at the very least appropriate. Instead, Nolan continued to pretend that Simon was loopy from Hollweg's hit, even though replays show Simon embellishing the hit trying to draw a penalty -- respondents to a NY1 poll showed what people think of this pretense.
Nolan should have shut his mouth a day earlier, when he, like Simon, took some cheap shots at Hollweg. First, in Simon's hearing with Colin Campbell, the Isles tried to justify Simon's action based on Hollweg's reputation as a hitter. At least, so said Pierre Lebrun of the Canadian Press in this CBC TV clip -- "Part of that Islander argument was to bring out the victim in this case, Ryan Hollweg, who has a reputation of questionable hits." Nolan then took a shot at Hollweg after the Isles' game against Washington. Talking about Brendan Witt taking a dive to try to draw a penalty against Donald Brashear, he said, in what Greg Logan of Newsday called "an obvious reference to Hollweg," that "the only saving grace is that hit a real tough guy who didn't whine and complain and lay there like he was dead." In the classless world of the Islanders, guys who dive are lauded as tough, while opponents who take two-handers on the chin are not allowed to go down at all.
Contrast Nolan's statements to what Tom Renney said about Simon even after Simon nearly killed Hollweg, calling him a "good man" who made a mistake. Now that's class.
How tough is Witt? Not tough enough to take it on the chin even when he asks for it. Complaining about the lack of penalty to Brashear, he said, "The league won't do anything about that, when you get coldcocked like that." In fact, the league suspended Brashear for doing the same to Aaron Ward earlier this season. But there was a difference -- Brashear hit Ward on his way to the penalty box because of something Ward said, while Witt and Brashear got into it just after Brashear scored a goal, with Witt faking a punch to try to draw Brashear into hitting him and taking a penalty, which he did. "He mouthed off to me," Witt told Newsday. "So I faked to go at him and he suckered me."
Campbell got this one right. In response to Witt's public complaints, he told Newsday, "I saw the incident. Brendan Witt plays a role on the team where he’s assigned to various players on certain teams. He gets into a number of situations. Last night, that was a fairly robust shift, and just before Brashear gave him the straight arm, Witt feigned at Brashear. So, what does he expect Brashear to do but lash out? It wasn’t a sucker shot. I think a two-minute penalty was applicable in this case and was fine."
Witt got away with his role in the tussle, as well as his dive, just as he did vs. Brendan Shanahan in a similar incident earlier this season. If he wants to play in a way that is deemed "unsportsmanlike conduct" when it is properly penalized, he should at least have the decency to keep his trap shut. Instead, he says stupid stuff like, "If we're going to get penalized for saying what we think, I mean, we're in America. Freedom of speech." Mr. Witt, in America, freedom of speech protects you against prosecution by the government, not sanctions from your employer that you agreed to when you signed your contract. And as far as I can tell, no one has penalized you for what you've said, or for your unsportsmanlike conduct.

wanted to see the number nine sent to the rafters of The
Garden , but different groups of fans want to see differ-
ent players to be so honored.The younger set remember Adam Graves.
But perhapsd the greatest Ranger to have ever worn that number was
Andy Bathgate.
The Hall Of Famer was one of the most popular
Rangers during his twelve seasons as a Ranger.From 1952
until his trade to Toronto late in the 1964 season.
Bathgate carried the Rangers through some the franchises
most dismal times.
As a Ranger, Bathgate was a goal scorer, a play-
maker , a fighter, a captain ,and a four time all-star.All the while
the rangers were a long suffering franchise, yet Bathgate gave fans
a reason to cheer.When he was traded to Toronto at age 31 for five
players ( a late season acquisition akin to todays rental players )
Bathgate won the sole Stanley Cup of his career.
Without realizing it , Bathgate helped to change the
game of hockey forever on November 1, 1959 .Credited as one of the
first developers of the slapshot, Bathgates hard shot struck
Montreal goalie Jacques Plante` in the face, opening a gash.Plante`
left the ice to get stitched up . When he returned, he was wearing
a mask to cover his stitches. All goalies now wear masks.
These days, we find the Winnipeg native living in
Brampton, Ontario, where he is the owner of a golf driving range
in nearby Mississauga . The range isa popular place, holding up to
two hundred golfers at a time , including some who still come just
to see the celebrity owner.
One of the more important items on the Bathgate agenda
these days is to spearhead a drive to have his teammate Dean Prentice
elected to The Hockey Hall Of Fame. Bathgate does not ask much of
Ranger fans, but he hopes they will help him here, as Prenmtice is
a dear friend of his. Let Bathgate tell you why he thinks his old friend
deserves a place in The Hockey Hall Of Fame :" Dean was a quality person,
an clean player who was overshadowed by many during the six team era.
Today, Dean Prentice is a minister who talks to young players and
tries to help them . "
Bathgate is still involved in hockey, even at age 74,
He always believed hockey was good to him, so it remains important
for him to give back to the game. Whether it is teaching young
players how to choose the right stick, how to position their hands
on the stick, or how to read a player just by how he controls
his stick, Bathgate is a highly regarded professor of hockey.
He still follows the game closely .He enjoys watching
Pittsburghs Sidney Crosby( Bathgate scored the very first goal
in Penguins history on October 11, 1967 ) and he believes referees
call too many cheap penalties. " You must have contact in the game",
he says, a mantra repeated just as one would expect from one of
the most feared fighters of his time.
Bathgate , who founded the very first hockey school,
has a grandson, Andy Hampton, who he says is going to be quite
the player.
He is unfortunately,forgotten by many of todays Ranger
fans. Younger fans who think seven seasons without playoffs is
tough should consider that the Rangers missed the playoffs twelve
times from 1951 to 1966 in a league where 4 of 6 teams qualified
-- and the four times they did make it, they were eliminated in
the first round.
It was a rough time to be a Ranger fan, but they had

including Rod Seilig, Bonb Nevin, and Dick Duff.It was the end
of an era for the four time winner of The Frank Boucher Trophy
awarded by the Rangers fanclub to the most popular player

accolades meant little to the team orientated Bathgate, which
explains why he is so dedicated to seeing a teammate like

Stop me if you've heard this one before. Another 2-0 lead blown, another goal off the stick of Marek Malik, another 0-fer on the power play while the opposition gets back into the game on their power play, another knee injury. It's Groundhog Day, but without anyone ever figuring out how to change things for the better. The Rangers looked like world beaters in the first period and the Ottawa Senators looked more like the old Washington Senators, but you knew how this was going to end up -- you saw Detroit, Jersey, Columbus, Pittsburgh twice. The last five losses in a row (five of the last ten games) -- all after the Rangers were up 2-0. And this of course despite chances to extend the lead on the power play in the first period or to get the equalizer in the third period -- another recurring nightmare, especially with the Sens scoring just as their first man advantage expired and as play continued six seconds after the end of their second.
And then the game winnier off the stick of Malik -- the eighth goal out of the last twenty-one to go in off a Ranger, the third off Malik's stick. No one wanted to blame Malik for this one -- Henrik Lundqvist and Tom Renney both credit his reach with preventing more goals than he deflects in, and Renney pointed out a number of errors that preceded tonight's deflection (although he didn't specify as a contributing factor the use of Ryan Hollweg and Colton orr against Dany Heatley and Jason Spezza after five minutes of idleness and for only their second shift in over twenty minutes).
Then there is the injury du jour. Karek Rachunek sustained a sprained MCL in a knee to knee collision with Jason Spezza in the first period tonight. He will not return and will be evaluated tomorrow. With Fedor Tyutin, who suffered the same injury on March 1st, at least a week away (maybe two) from returning (he started working out on the bicycle today), the Rangers will have to call up a sixth defenseman from Hartford for their weekend games and beyond.

Younger fans who think seven seasons without playoffs is
tough should consider that the Rangers missed the playoffs twelve
times from 1951 to 1966 in a league where 4 of 6 teams qualified
-- and the four times they did make it, they were eliminated in
the first round.
That part above is brutal....I thought we had some lean years here in Vancouver in the 80's....but to miss the playoffs 12 times in 15 years in a six team league is pathetic

New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that defenseman David Liffiton has been recalled from the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League (AHL) on an emergency basis.
Liffiton, 22, has collected one goal and 10 assists, along with 154 penalty minutes in 61 games with Hartford (AHL) this season. In Hartford’s 5-0 win on Sunday vs. Springfield, Liffiton registered an assist, posted a season-high plus-three rating and was named Third Star of the game. The 6-2, 210-pound defenseman currently ranks fourth on the Wolf Pack with 154 penalty minutes.
INJURY UPDATES: Defenseman Karel Rachunek suffered an MCL injury during Wednesday night's game vs. the Ottawa Senators and will undergo an MRI today to determine the extent of the injury. Brendan Shanahan skated with the team at practice today, but remains out indefinitely due to a concussion suffered on Feb. 17 vs. Philadelphia. Kevin Weekes also participated in practice today, but remains out day-to-day with a strained quadricep muscle that was suffered on Feb. 13. Marcel Hossa and Fedor Tyutin also remain sidelined. Hossa will be out three to four weeks due to a left MCL sprain suffered on March 5 vs. the New York Islanders. Tyutin sustained a left MCL sprain on March 1 vs. Pittsburgh and will be sidelined two weeks with the injury.

"I'll tell you what, this is the last we're talking about it," Islander coach Ted Nolan said yesterday about Chris Simon's hatchet job on Ryan Hollweg. We highly doubt it, though. Not because the media will continue to pursue it, as Nolan went on to say, but because he was already talking about it two days too long himself, unwilling to accept what the rest of the hockey world has already decided, that Simon's action was despicable and that his sentence was at the very least appropriate. Instead, Nolan continued to pretend that Simon was loopy from Hollweg's hit, even though replays show Simon embellishing the hit trying to draw a penalty -- respondents to a NY1 poll showed what people think of this pretense.
Nolan should have shut his mouth a day earlier, when he, like Simon, took some cheap shots at Hollweg. First, in Simon's hearing with Colin Campbell, the Isles tried to justify Simon's action based on Hollweg's reputation as a hitter. At least, so said Pierre Lebrun of the Canadian Press in this CBC TV clip -- "Part of that Islander argument was to bring out the victim in this case, Ryan Hollweg, who has a reputation of questionable hits." Nolan then took a shot at Hollweg after the Isles' game against Washington. Talking about Brendan Witt taking a dive to try to draw a penalty against Donald Brashear, he said, in what Greg Logan of Newsday called "an obvious reference to Hollweg," that "the only saving grace is that hit a real tough guy who didn't whine and complain and lay there like he was dead." In the classless world of the Islanders, guys who dive are lauded as tough, while opponents who take two-handers on the chin are not allowed to go down at all.
Contrast Nolan's statements to what Tom Renney said about Simon even after Simon nearly killed Hollweg, calling him a "good man" who made a mistake. Now that's class.
How tough is Witt? Not tough enough to take it on the chin even when he asks for it. Complaining about the lack of penalty to Brashear, he said, "The league won't do anything about that, when you get coldcocked like that." In fact, the league suspended Brashear for doing the same to Aaron Ward earlier this season. But there was a difference -- Brashear hit Ward on his way to the penalty box because of something Ward said, while Witt and Brashear got into it just after Brashear scored a goal, with Witt faking a punch to try to draw Brashear into hitting him and taking a penalty, which he did. "He mouthed off to me," Witt told Newsday. "So I faked to go at him and he suckered me."
Campbell got this one right. In response to Witt's public complaints, he told Newsday, "I saw the incident. Brendan Witt plays a role on the team where he’s assigned to various players on certain teams. He gets into a number of situations. Last night, that was a fairly robust shift, and just before Brashear gave him the straight arm, Witt feigned at Brashear. So, what does he expect Brashear to do but lash out? It wasn’t a sucker shot. I think a two-minute penalty was applicable in this case and was fine."
Witt got away with his role in the tussle, as well as his dive, just as he did vs. Brendan Shanahan in a similar incident earlier this season. If he wants to play in a way that is deemed "unsportsmanlike conduct" when it is properly penalized, he should at least have the decency to keep his trap shut. Instead, he says stupid stuff like, "If we're going to get penalized for saying what we think, I mean, we're in America. Freedom of speech." Mr. Witt, in America, freedom of speech protects you against prosecution by the government, not sanctions from your employer that you agreed to when you signed your contract. And as far as I can tell, no one has penalized you for what you've said, or for your unsportsmanlike conduct.

A rare day off for all of the prospects, but that does not stop the news from making the rounds. MTU (Jordan Foote) will face defending NCAA champion Wisconsin in the WCHA Final Five. To win the WCHA championship, the Huskies will have to win three games in three nights. They currently rank 16th in the weekly college poll, up two places from last week -- Maine (Billy Ryan) took a huge dive to 17 while BU (Kenny Roche) remained at #8. Brad Curle of the Calgary Hitmen sent us this news: "For the third time in playoff history, the Hitmen and Kootenay Ice will meet. In 1999 Calgary eliminated Kootenay in seven games in the first round. In 2000 the Ice ousted the Hitmen in five games. On both occasions the series winner went on to win the WHL Championship." The Hartford Wolf Pack could wind up with a solid forward -- Calgary's Brodie Dupont or Kootenay's Ryan Russell -- once this series is over.

Old-time Ranger fans and younger fans alike have all
wanted to see the number nine sent to the rafters of The
Garden , but different groups of fans want to see differ-
ent players to be so honored.The younger set remember Adam Graves.
But perhapsd the greatest Ranger to have ever worn that number was
Andy Bathgate.
The Hall Of Famer was one of the most popular
Rangers during his twelve seasons as a Ranger.From 1952
until his trade to Toronto late in the 1964 season.
Bathgate carried the Rangers through some the franchises
most dismal times.
As a Ranger, Bathgate was a goal scorer, a play-
maker , a fighter, a captain ,and a four time all-star.All the while
the rangers were a long suffering franchise, yet Bathgate gave fans
a reason to cheer.When he was traded to Toronto at age 31 for five
players ( a late season acquisition akin to todays rental players )
Bathgate won the sole Stanley Cup of his career.
Without realizing it , Bathgate helped to change the
game of hockey forever on November 1, 1959 .Credited as one of the
first developers of the slapshot, Bathgates hard shot struck
Montreal goalie Jacques Plante` in the face, opening a gash.Plante`
left the ice to get stitched up . When he returned, he was wearing
a mask to cover his stitches. All goalies now wear masks.
These days, we find the Winnipeg native living in
Brampton, Ontario, where he is the owner of a golf driving range
in nearby Mississauga . The range isa popular place, holding up to
two hundred golfers at a time , including some who still come just
to see the celebrity owner.
One of the more important items on the Bathgate agenda
these days is to spearhead a drive to have his teammate Dean Prentice
elected to The Hockey Hall Of Fame. Bathgate does not ask much of
Ranger fans, but he hopes they will help him here, as Prenmtice is
a dear friend of his. Let Bathgate tell you why he thinks his old friend
deserves a place in The Hockey Hall Of Fame :" Dean was a quality person,
an clean player who was overshadowed by many during the six team era.
Today, Dean Prentice is a minister who talks to young players and
tries to help them . "
Bathgate is still involved in hockey, even at age 74,
He always believed hockey was good to him, so it remains important
for him to give back to the game. Whether it is teaching young
players how to choose the right stick, how to position their hands
on the stick, or how to read a player just by how he controls
his stick, Bathgate is a highly regarded professor of hockey.
He still follows the game closely .He enjoys watching
Pittsburghs Sidney Crosby( Bathgate scored the very first goal
in Penguins history on October 11, 1967 ) and he believes referees
call too many cheap penalties. " You must have contact in the game",
he says, a mantra repeated just as one would expect from one of
the most feared fighters of his time.
Bathgate , who founded the very first hockey school,
has a grandson, Andy Hampton, who he says is going to be quite
the player.
He is unfortunately,forgotten by many of todays Ranger

in every game.In 719 games as a Ranger, he had 272 goals & 457
assists, along with 444 penalty minutes , totals that would
have been even higher had he played with more competitive teams.
He led the Rangers in scoring eight times, was their
leader in goals four times . He tied for the league lead in
scoring in 1961-62.From December 15 to January 15th of that
season, Bathgate did what no other Ranger has ever done
-- score a goal in ten consecutive games ( he scored 11 in that
span ) . He won the Hart Trophy in 1959 as the leagues most
valuable player and represented thew Rangers in eight
NHL All-Star games

left after the 1997 season and when Brian Leetch was traded in

Deja Vu All Over Again
Stop me if you've heard this one before. Another 2-0 lead blown, another goal off the stick of Marek Malik, another 0-fer on the power play while the opposition gets back into the game on their power play, another knee injury. It's Groundhog Day, but without anyone ever figuring out how to change things for the better. The Rangers looked like world beaters in the first period and the Ottawa Senators looked more like the old Washington Senators, but you knew how this was going to end up -- you saw Detroit, Jersey, Columbus, Pittsburgh twice. The last five losses in a row (five of the last ten games) -- all after the Rangers were up 2-0. And this of course despite chances to extend the lead on the power play in the first period or to get the equalizer in the third period -- another recurring nightmare, especially with the Sens scoring just as their first man advantage expired and as play continued six seconds after the end of their second.
And then the game winnier off the stick of Malik -- the eighth goal out of the last twenty-one to go in off a Ranger, the third off Malik's stick. No one wanted to blame Malik for this one -- Henrik Lundqvist and Tom Renney both credit his reach with preventing more goals than he deflects in, and Renney pointed out a number of errors that preceded tonight's deflection (although he didn't specify as a contributing factor the use of Ryan Hollweg and Colton orr against Dany Heatley and Jason Spezza after five minutes of idleness and for only their second shift in over twenty minutes).
Then there is the injury du jour. Karek Rachunek sustained a sprained MCL in a knee to knee collision with Jason Spezza in the first period tonight. He will not return and will be evaluated tomorrow. With Fedor Tyutin, who suffered the same injury on March 1st, at least a week away (maybe two) from returning (he started working out on the bicycle today), the Rangers will have to call up a sixth defenseman from Hartford for their weekend games and beyond.

LIFFITON RECALLED FROM PACK ON EMERGENCY BASIS

New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that defenseman David Liffiton has been recalled from the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League (AHL) on an emergency basis.
Liffiton, 22, has collected one goal and 10 assists, along with 154 penalty minutes in 61 games with Hartford (AHL) this season. In Hartford’s 5-0 win on Sunday vs. Springfield, Liffiton registered an assist, posted a season-high plus-three rating and was named Third Star of the game. The 6-2, 210-pound defenseman currently ranks fourth on the Wolf Pack with 154 penalty minutes.
INJURY UPDATES: Defenseman Karel Rachunek suffered an MCL injury during Wednesday night's game vs. the Ottawa Senators and will undergo an MRI today to determine the extent of the injury. Brendan Shanahan skated with the team at practice today, but remains out indefinitely due to a concussion suffered on Feb. 17 vs. Philadelphia. Kevin Weekes also participated in practice today, but remains out day-to-day with a strained quadricep muscle that was suffered on Feb. 13. Marcel Hossa and Fedor Tyutin also remain sidelined. Hossa will be out three to four weeks due to a left MCL sprain suffered on March 5 vs. the New York Islanders. Tyutin sustained a left MCL sprain on March 1 vs. Pittsburgh and will be sidelined two weeks with the injury.
