The Rangers head to Puerto Rico today for the apparent purpose of introducing ice hockey to the island with a three-day visit culminating in a Saturday night preseason game against the Florida Panthers.
They will do so without their signature star, their No. 1 goaltender, their only player of Caribbean heritage and a key defenseman.
Jaromir Jagr will remain in Westchester to continue the two-a-day skating sessions and grueling off-ice regimen geared toward getting his surgically repaired shoulder as strong as possible for Opening Night Oct.5.
Henrik Lundqvist, who backstopped the Rangers to a 2-0 preseason victory over the Devils last night at the Garden, will stay behind as well to work with goaltending coach Benoit Allaire and fine-tune his game. Veteran Kevin Weekes, whose parents hail from Barbados, would have been part of the traveling party, but he aggravated a groin strain yesterday, putting his availability for the season opener against Washington in doubt.
And Michal Rozsival, the defenseman who had a breakout season (league-leading plus-35) last year, underwent arthroscopic right knee surgery yesterday, making his readiness for Opening Night questionable. Rozsival had torn cartilage repaired by team orthopedists Andrew Feldman and Tony Maddalo at St. Vincent's Hospital and is expected to be out two weeks.
If Weekes - who was plagued by groin problems early last season - can't play for awhile, Al Montoya - whose surgically repaired shoulder is up to the task of playing the entire game in San Juan, team doctors say - must be ready to serve as Lundqvist's backup.
As for Jagr, although he has reported no setbacks in his recovery from surgery in May to repair a separated shoulder, the Rangers are being extremely cautious. He was kept out of all training-camp scrimmages to avoid body contact and might not play in any preseason games. But he has been doubling back to the MSG Training Center many evenings to get in a second, punishing skate after morning practices and weight sessions.
"He's got a training program going on here where he can inflict a lot of pain on himself," Rangers coach Tom Renney said. "We don't want to interrupt that."
Lundqvist made 22 saves last night and Matt Cullen scored a sparkling goal to lift the Rangers to a home-and-home sweep of the Devils. Petr Prucha also scored for the Rangers.

September 22, 2006 -- The shoulder injury Jaromir Jagr suffered in the first game of last year's playoffs may not just have doomed the Rangers' postseason hopes a year ago.
Jagr also may miss the beginning of this season, still recovering from off-season surgery on the dislocation.
"There's some doubt," head coach Tom Renney said yesterday of whether Jagr would be ready to play for the Oct. 5 season opener against the Caps at the Garden.
Jagr missed both of the team's first preseason games against the Devils and is not making the trip to Puerto Rico, where the Blueshirts will face Florida tomorrow. Instead, he will go to Hartford to work on conditioning.
Earlier in the week, Jagr said he hoped to play in the team's final exhibition, and leading up to camp both he and Renney said they wanted him to get as much ice time as possible.
Before Wednesday night's game at the Garden against the Devils, Jagr said he didn't know if he would play the opener.
The team is still waiting for doctors to give it the go-ahead. Yesterday, after Jagr again participated in practice, Renney said Jagr had not been medically cleared "at all" for contact.
The uncertainty is not unexpected. Jagr underwent surgery on May 8 and the recovery time is typically four to six months. The season opener is a bit less than five months after the operation.
Rather than sounding discouraged, Renney seemed optimistic about Jagr's prognosis.
"He's way ahead of schedule," Renney said.
*
Goaltender Henrik Lundqvist will not go to Puerto Rico, either, although he is healthy. Lundqvist played well in his debut, stopping all 22 shots in the 2-0 win over the Devils on Wednesday.
"It just felt good to be out there," said Lundqvist, who struggled down the stretch last year. "We're not thinking about last year. I'm focusing on what I'm doing now."

If it were up to Jaromir Jagr, the question would be moot because he already would have played in a preseason game.
To his mild frustration, however, Jagr has yet to be cleared by team doctors for full contact. So he did not accompany the team to Puerto Rico yesterday for tomorrow night's game against the Panthers, might not play in any preseason games and is not a lock to be in the lineup come Opening Night, Oct. 5.
"In my mind I will (play in the opener). But it's not up to me," Jagr said after practice yesterday. "Well, I hope it's my decision. But you just never know."
Jagr underwent surgery May 8 to repair a severely separated left shoulder. He has been doubling up on his skating sessions since he arrived at training camp, often returning to the Greenburgh facility in early evenings to punish himself some more after morning practices.
But he was held out of the daily intrasquad scrimmages during camp. And when asked if there was a chance Jagr might not play in the season opener against Washington at the Garden, coach Tom Renney said: "Yep, there's some doubt."
Jagr is more concerned about opening the season without an exhibition game under his belt than taking a belt from a preseason opponent. "The hits don't matter to me - it's the timing, the games are different," Jagr said. "I would like to play some games before the opener. Whatever I have to do, I will do it. But it's just not easy not playing in any games and then just go and play right away.
"I think I can play now, but the doctors . . . I don't know. There's no rush. But I think I can play. I mean, during the practices, it's normal."
SHAPING UP: D Darius Kasparaitis is struggling to get back into game condition after a summer in which he underwent two surgeries - for the abdominal muscle tear he suffered late last season and a previous shoulder injury.
"I have time to recover," he said. "I'm not fully there yet, but when the season comes, I'll be ready."
YOUTH SERVICE: Forwards Nigel Dawes and Brandon Dubinsky and defenseman Marc Staal, all youngsters, were among 23 players the Rangers took to Puerto Rico. . . . The Devils fell to 1-3 in the preseason as Jeff Carter and Simon Gagne scored power-play goals to lead the Flyers, 2-1, in Philly. David Clarkson scored for the Devils on the power play in the third period. Martin Brodeur stopped 17 shots for the Devils before Frank Doyle (20 saves) replaced him halfway through the second period.

Talk about Leetch rejoining the Rangers is, at this point, all white noise that tends to drown out the significance of this elite athlete's historical status. Another of the game's legends may be gone soon, and perhaps without a proper stage from which to make an exit.

It's possible Leetch will decide, maybe even within a week or two, that it's time to hang up his skates. But there's no need for him to rush to plot his retirement, and there's no need for any club's management to rush to judgment about signing Leetch. Proof that salary arbitration is entirely incompatible with a hard cap system comes with a review of team payrolls that shows 20 of the NHL's teams at or well beyond the $40 million payroll mark on the $44 million cap, and only two (Washington and Pittsburgh) short enough of the $36 million payroll mid-point to ensure eligibility for receiving a potentially lucrative second-round of revenue sharing out of escrow overage.
Nashville and Edmonton are the two other clubs with even a chance to stay under the midpoint, with the likelihood that 24 clubs will exceed $40 million by the end of the year.
Of course, the cap is a magnet when salary arbitration exerts such a pull.
It appears the Rangers will enter the year at approximately $41 million, including the contracts of both Jed Ortmeyer ($551,750) and Sandis Ozolinsh ($2.75 million), both of whom will enter the season on long-term injury (LTI) exemption. Players on LTI continue to count against the cap, but the team can exceed the $44 million limit by the amount of the designated players' contracts. Because the Rangers aren't close to the cap, they receive no tangible benefit under the system.
The Rangers only will create cap space by placing Ozolinsh on waivers, thus removing him from the NHL roster when he clears. They cannot do that until Ozolinsh comes off LTI. At the pace he's recovering from postseason knee surgery, that should be no later than early November. If that's the case - and assuming he doesn't rejoin the team - the Rangers would take an approximate $650,000 charge on the defenseman, thus leaving them at approximately $39.2 million for the year.
*
It's fine for Glen Sather to express his opinion the Devils should not be able to get LTI relief on Alexander Mogilny, but we bet there are 29 other general managers who don't quite understand why the league cap charges the Rangers only $4.94 million of the $8.36 million Jaromir Jagr earns.
Deputy commissioner Bill Daly, responding by e-mail to a Slap Shots' query of what the league's recourse is if a team is not under the cap by opening night: "Team doesn't play."

Returning home from a successful jaunt into Puerto Rico Saturday, the unbeatenRangers get set to host the intrastate rival Islanders at The Garden Monday (MSG, 7:00 p.m.). The Blueshirts are 3-0-0 so far with four preseason games remaining before their season kicks off at home vs. the Capitals.
Another season is set to unfold without Mark Messier meaningfully involved with any club’s front office. Moose told us earlier in the Summer that he plans to chill out for a while and then decide his future. We’re informed that one prominent club wants Mess as part of its general staff badly. What’s more, that move appears to be not all that far away.
