October 5, 2006 -- TONIGHT is the New York Rangers' opening game. They play Washing ton. So how do hotshot hockey play ers mark the day? 10:30 practice, 12:30 lunch, 1:30 nap, call time at the Garden 4:30. And how do I know? Because I sat in on practice yesterday.
The practice rink in Tarrytown is Madison Square Garden's size. The differences are, although I brought a sweater and heaters were overhead, I nearly froze to death. Also, there's no raked stadium seating. I sat at ice level. Exactly where the goalie crouches. Exactly where the puck slams into the protective Plexiglas. It's terrifying. The puck travels at 100 mph but, I was told, "This is only 60 percent of the intensity of real play where teams don't like each other."
Right. Okayyyyy then.
A goalie being the most important player, I was introduced to goalie Henrik Lundqvist. He's 24, 6-foot-1, 195 pounds, although who could tell with his massive leggings, shields, face mask, body protection and huge gloves. After leading Team Sweden to gold at Torino's Olympics last year, he joined the Rangers and broke the rookie record for wins.
Called King Henrik, this hottest new name at the Rangers, whose follow-up contract will net him multi mega multiple millions, who was featured in People's "100 Most Beautiful" May issue, said: "Yeah, I've gotten hurt a few times. And I get sore. I've had problems with my hips and knees. Ask me in 10 years how my knees are holding up. I sometimes have to ice them.
"In Russia, I had my jaw broken at a practice session. The puck hit one side of my mouth. I couldn't open my mouth. It wasn't totally broken but it was a little bit cracked. I thought I'd lost all my teeth." Smiling broadly, what he flashed were whiter and larger than those 18 mm South Sea pearls Ellen Barkin is unloading at Christie's. Clearly he still had them. "They wanted me to go to a hospital, but I wouldn't. I wanted to wait until I got back to Sweden two days later. It was hard for a while. I could eat only soup.
"A goalie must be flexible. Unfortunately, I am not a very flexible person. I've started doing yoga to help. I use my muscles, but if you look at my body you'll see I'm stiff."
I might've lingered on that part of looking at his body, but King Henrik forged onward. "In hockey you have to be focused. No matter what's going on in your life, you must get it out of your mind when you step onto the ice. I play visual situations out, things that could go wrong, in my head before I play so if something does happen it's already a familiar situation to me and I know what to do because I've already pictured it.
"I go through ritual superstitions. Before I go out I hit the wall with my stick. I hit a certain post with my stick. You need that to feel comfortable. It's stressful out there. And I try to eat the same things. I love junk food. Pizza, hamburgers, Mexican, pasta. I'll eat pasta. I love pasta."
The guy talks easily. No accent. Off-season he lives in Gothenburg, Sweden. His twin plays hockey for whatever's in Dallas. Christmas his parents flew here to see him play at the Garden. He sports a beard and moustache "because I don't like to shave when I'm carrying a lot of equipment. It itches. I shave more in off-season." His Swedish girlfriend Therese lives with him. "I hope she thinks I'm one of the 100 most beautiful," he said and again flashed those Ellen Barkin pearls.
So when did New York Ranger No. 30 begin playing? "I started skating at 4. I could barely walk, let alone skate. My father's a ski instructor. We lived in a ski village, and at 8 I started in hockey.
"So what will I ever do someday when I can no longer play? I'm still young, so that's way off. If I play here 10 years, I should have enough money to maybe open a restaurant." Yeah. Or to buy his entire native country.
The season lasts until mid-April. Playoffs are first week in June. Tonight a family room's open following the game with food since they're all starving because they don't eat beforehand. Trust me, these Rangers eat good. I toured their cafeteria. Lunchtime it was pork chops with gravy, pasta, sweet potatoes, thick pea soup. We are not talking tuna tartare and asparagus spears here. But will he do anything special afterward?
"Maybe go out. I love New York restaurants. I love New York. I only don't love that Wollman ice-skating rink in Central Park. Their skates are terrible. Thick and dull. Ours are like steak knives. Cut yourself, and you'll bleed. Except for those Central Park ice skates, New York's got everything."

What a way to start a season! Jagr scoring on the first shot of the season, 29 seconds in! Way to show everyone he deserves to wear the C. Shanahan adding two in his Broadway debut. Its gonna be a great season!
Darius Kasparaitis does not wish Karel Rachunek any ill. But the Rangers are playing in Philadelphia tonight and tormenting the Flyers is one of the things Kasparaitis always has done best.
And unless the charley horse Rachunek suffered late in Thursday night's season opener prevents him from playing, Kasparaitis again will be a spectator in street clothes tonight. That is because Rangers coach Tom Renney believes that Kasparaitis' conditioning following a two-surgery summer isn't yet sufficient to include him among the team's top six defensemen.
"I'm disappointed but I'm part of this team and happy to be here," Kasparaitis said after a practice yesterday that ended with assistant coach Perry Pearn putting him through extra skating drills. "I'm willing to be patient. As I've said before, it's not about me. And whatever the coach decides, that's what I have to respect.
"I put my ego away a long time ago. It's behind me. And if they need me (tonight), I'm ready to go."
Kasparaitis was ready from the drop of the puck last season. And his effervescent personality in the dressing room and fearless physicality on the ice were keys to the Rangers' stunning success - particularly in games against the Flyers, many of whom spent entire shifts chasing him around.
He concedes that he is not in peak condition after undergoing shoulder and groin surgeries over the summer. But he believed that, in five preseason games, he proved that he was fit enough to be in the lineup.
"I agree that I need to work on it and that I'm not at my top," Kasparaitis said of his conditioning. "But I think I'm on the level where I can play in the NHL, because I proved in the first exhibition game against the Islanders that I was hitting people and I was playing tough.
"I think I'm ready to play on a high level. I played five exhibition games and I'm just waiting for my call."
That Renney thought otherwise probably didn't sting Kasparaitis as much as another of the coach's decisions: to take an alternate captaincy away from the 33-year-old defenseman. Brendan Shanahan and Martin Straka will wear the "A" this year while Jaromir Jagr serves as captain.
"It hurts a little bit, but I saw it coming," Kasparaitis said. "We have great leadership on this team with Marty and no doubt Shanny and Jags. They all deserve it, especially Jags deserves that 'C.'
"I'll take any role they give me on this team and I'm happy."
SWEDE IT IS: Henrik Lundqvist will make his second start in goal tonight. Kevin Weekes started three of the Rangers' four games at Philadelphia last season, including the 5-3 victory on opening night.

Should be a good game. Hopefully they get off to as good a start as they did against the Caps! I shall be cheering on at home, watching in HD as always (if Philly is one of the few markets that broadcasts in HD), with a beer in hand!
i thought that shootout record may have been broken- that is until Hossa scooped the puck right thru the 5 hole of Nittimaki .
again- no kapsar -
2-0 baby,
-_/ Lets Go Rangers ! \_ -
I was curious when they were going to bring Malik out! Too bad it didn't get that far. I liked seeing Hossa get the goal, especially since he played a pretty decent game, aside from taking a penalty. Great game though. It would be nice to see a power play goal though. Thats the only thing that worries me. Should be interesting Tuesday night when the home and home finished up. Then Thursday night to beat up the Pens while I'll be in attendance!
According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Flyers are looking to sign free agent veteran defenceman Brian Leetch.
The Flyers are without Mike Rathje for an indefinite period due to a herniated disk, and would like Leetch to solidify their power play.
"Brian has not made any decisions about the season so far," Leetch's agent Jay Grossman told the Inquirer. "We've been contacted by a number of teams about playing this season. There are a number of things Brian has to sort through. He's made no decision in his personal situation."
Currently, the Flyers have Joni Pitkanen quarterbacking the power play with some help from newcomer Nolan Baumgartner and second-year NHLer Freddy Meyer, neither of whom boasts power play credentials to match Leetch, an 18-year NHL veteran who has scored 1028 points in 1205 career games with the Rangers, Maple Leafs and Bruins.
Leetch, 38, had 32 points, and a minus-10 rating, in 61 games with Boston last season.

With Rathje hurting, is Leetch an option?
Oct 9 - With Mike Rathje out indefinitely with a herniated disk (see below), the Flyers might be shopping for another defenseman.
Citing two league sources, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported Monday that the Flyers are interested in free-agent veteran Brian Leetch.
"Brian has not made any decisions about the season so far," Jay Grossman, Leetch's agent, told the newspaper. "We've been contacted by a number of teams about playing this season. There are a number of things Brian has to sort through. He's made no decision in his personal situation."
The Inquirer added that GM Bob Clarke has spoken with Grossman, but not with Leetch directly.
According to the report, Leetch wants to remain in the Eastern Conference because he still lives in New York, where he helped lead the Rangers to a Cup in 1994.
Leetch, 38, has reportedly been skating and working out throughout the summer. Leetch had 32 points and was a minus-10 in 61 games last season with the Boston Bruins.

Sabres Sabres? Is it all behind the mask for Biron?
Oct 9 - Martin Biron claims he's donning a plain, white goalie mask because he was waiting this offseason for the Sabres' new uniforms to be unveiled. Now, there might be more to the story.
According to a report from The Montreal Gazette, some are speculating that Biron is hoping to be traded, something he reportedly wanted to have happened at the NHL draft.
Biron, who will make $2.178 million this season, lost his No. 1 job to Ryan Miller last season. The report indicated that his salary is likely more than what teams would want to pay for a netminder.

Oilers Oilers? Staios reportedly seeking extension
Oct 9 - After watching the Oilers sign Joffrey Lupul, Ales Hemsky and Ethan Moreau to extensions, Steve Staios is hoping for the same.
According to local reports out of Edmonton, the veteran winger is hoping that the Oilers and his agent, Pat Morris, will be able to reach a new deal by mid-week. If not, the talks might be tabled until after the 2006-07 season (the same as Ryan Smyth).
"I'd prefer that if anything is going to get done it gets done quickly," Staios told local reporters Sunday. "It's something I'd rather not think about. Once you get into the season and into the day-to-day routine, you want to think about playing and winning. That's all you really want to think about."

Flyers Flyers? Rathje to follow Mogilny path?
Oct 9 - With Mike Rathje out indefinitely with a herniated disk in his back, the Flyers might look for options, especially when it comes to the cap.
According to a report from the Philadelphia Daily News, the Flyers might consider turning to the league and asking to get Rathje declared physically unable to play. It would clear his $3.5 million salary and enable Philly to deal for another defenseman.
Earlier this month, the league approved Devils GM Lou Lamoriello's same request for Alexander Mogilny, a move than enabled New Jersey to sign Brian Gionta, Paul Martin and others.

Ducks? More goalie controversy in Philly?
Oct 9 - So, would it be an NHL season without a little goaltending uncertainty in Philadelphia?
There was some buzz over the past few weeks that the Flyers were looking for another goaltender since Antero Niittymaki's hip problems surfaced.
One of the reported candidates: Ilya Bryzgalov.
But, over the weekend, Ducks GM Brian Burke denied that he and Flyers GM Bob Clarke were talking trade.
"Not true," Burke was quoted as saying in the Philadelphia Inquirer. "I've talked to Bob Clarke last week, but it had nothing to do with either of us trying to trade players."

Oct 5 - Sandis Ozolinsh might be close to returning to the lineup, but whether or not the Rangers will play him is another story.
According to local reports out of New York, the defenseman, who was acquired at last season's trade deadline from the Anaheim Ducks, is close to being cleared nearly four months after a second reconstructive surgery on his left knee.
But reports said the Rangers haven't decided whether to play, trade or send down the defenseman.

Oct 5 - The Predators now appear ready to start contract talks with Kimmo Timonen.
Shortly after naming Timonen team captain, the Predators want to open up talks with the defenseman that would prevent him from becoming an unrestricted free agent this summer.
Nashville GM David Poile told local reporters that the team plans to open talks next week.
"We held off on the negotiations on purpose while the captaincy was being decided, because we didn't want to confuse any of the issues," Poile was quoted as saying in The Tennessean.

LETS GO RANGERS!!!
MSGs been replaying that 13 round shootout- pretty much all day on Rangers in 60 .

Ducks Flyers?
Stay tuned.

Sandis Ozolinsh
Rangers Rangers? Ozolinsh close to return, but will he play?
Oct 5 - Sandis Ozolinsh might be close to returning to the lineup, but whether or not the Rangers will play him is another story.
According to local reports out of New York, the defenseman, who was acquired at last season's trade deadline from the Anaheim Ducks, is close to being cleared nearly four months after a second reconstructive surgery on his left knee.
But reports said the Rangers haven't decided whether to play, trade or send down the defenseman.
Ozolinsh has had a tumultuous offseason. He was arrested for driving while intoxicated after participating in the league's voluntary substance abuse program earlier in the season.

Predators Predators? Preds ready to talk deal with Timonen
