he filled his role nicely with the rangers. i always thought they had a strong 4th line.

side note... 1994 game 6 eastern conference finals on MSG right now. they would not have won this game without kovalev. fact.

    on colton orr:

i remember one of his last fights as a NYR, i dont even know who his " opponent " was , but he cold clocked the poor guy with a devastating punch to the head.

this guy was a good Ranger and tough as nails when he had to be.

It should be very interesting dynamically in the new New York Ranger lockerroom.

Brashear coming in, after having concussed Blair Betts in that game in the playoffs,
and not to mention putting Brashear and Avery in the same lineup?

unfortunately the " out " is that he sits on the bench.
we need all 3 NY area teams in the playoffs again.

Here's Why Brashear according to The Hockey Rodent

Wed, Jul 1, 6:00 PM Eastern

Feedback on the Donald Brashear signing has been predominantly negative on the message board. The objections are two-fold:

    1) Colton Orr was turning into a more versatile hockey player, making it possible to roll four lines without double-shifting.

    2) Brashear spends more time in the penalty box and has the occasional meltdown. For example, he should have received a penalty during the playoffs for challenging Orr during warmups. As it was, he did get suspended.

Both arguments are valid. However, both perspectives also miss the point entirely.

The purpose of Donald's presence in MSG is not to intimidate enemy players or keep Philadelphia's Chris Pronger from taking liberties with Blueshirt forwards.

The reason for Brashear's acquisition is to intimidate his own locker room! Not since Mark Messier could a Gotham bench boss wield such a daunting instrument of punishment for slovenly play and failure to finish checks. The mere threat of enforcement will raise the level of intensity on the ice by a squad which played soft for four seasons under Tom Renney's rule.

    How do I know this?

    C'mon you do the math,...

    Koivu to Rangers ?

    Fri Jul 03, 2009 8:53 am EDT

Gaborik tells New York that injuries will not be a problemMarian Gaborik(notes) signed away from the Minnesota Wild by the New York Rangers, brings speed and scoring ability to Madison Square Garden. He also brings questions about his durability, according to the New York Daily News.

"I feel great," Gaborik said on a conference call from his home in Slovakia, a day after signing a five-year contract worth $37.5 million. "I played the last 11 games of the year and I took time off after and tried to get to 100%. Now, I'm in full training, getting ready for the season. I'm very excited. I don't see any problems down the road."

It's the problems in his rearview mirror that have some fans concerned about the signing. Gaborik missed all but 17 games last year with groin, back and hip injuries, the last of which drove him to the operating table in January. He has played more than 65 games only once in the past five seasons. "I'm glad I had the surgery, it worked out perfectly," Gaborik said.

The Daily News reported the Rangers, meanwhile, remain in the market for a center who can distribute the puck to their new prize. Brandon Dubinsky(notes) is in line to get the first audition at the top pivot, though Glen Sather continued combing a thinned market Saturday. Saku Koivu(notes), the Habs captain who was cast away after 13 seasons in Montreal, still had no contract as of Saturday night, though he was in talks to join his brother Mikko in Minnesota. Dallas' Brendan Morrison(notes) also was on the market, though he's 33 and coming off two down years in a row.

will this come back to bite the rangers in the arse ?

    a 2nd look at Heatley ?

Nikolai Zherdev's decision to file for salary arbitration probably means that it will be one-and-done on Broadway for the underachieving winger.

As it was, there was debate within the organization whether to qualify Zherdev at the required $3.25 million price tag after his uneven season that frustrated both Tom Renney and John Tortorella.

Now, with Zherdev seeking a contract believed in the neighborhood of $4.5M, there's little doubt the Blueshirts would walk away from an arbitration award that's even a nickel more than $3.25M, and thus make the 24-year-old winger an unrestricted free agent.

Maybe that's the end game envisioned by Zherdev's agent, Roland Hedges, who has not responded to a series of voice mail and e-mail messages left by The Post over the last three months.

Maybe Hedges believes Zherdev, who was even less effective for Tortorella than he was for Renney and who failed to register a point in the Blueshirts' seven-game first-round defeat to the Capitals, will hit a home run on the free agent market, though $3.25M for a 23-goal scorer whose work ethic comes and goes without notice would seem to clear the fence.

If Hedges believes that, he is in the minority. Why, Ottawa GM Bryan Murray last week all but said that he was insulted by being offered a tandem of Zherdev and Michal Rozsival in exchange for the toxic Dany Heatley.

The filing by Zherdev, who came to New York last summer from Columbus with Dan Fritsche in exchange for Fedor Tyutin and Christian Backman, in effect gives the Rangers an additional $3.25M of cap space with which to shop for a top-six forward on the free-agent and trade markets as the parties await the hearing that has not yet been scheduled.

It might open a second look at Heatley, though the Blueshirts have no more intention now than they did last week of surrendering prime young assets in order to get him. Plus, Heatley's sense of entitlement as framed by agent J.P. Barry in a recent interview with Canada's Sun Media seems excessive enough to scare anyone and everyone away.

The Rangers have held conversations with Dallas regarding Brad Richards, who has two years remaining on a contract carrying an annual $7.8M cap hit, and with San Jose concerning Patrick Marleau, who has one year to go at $6.3M on his deal, but there's no indication at this time that either player is on his way to Broadway.

There's also interest in 34-year-old Montreal free agent Saku Koivu and in 39-year-old Dallas free agent defenseman and power-play point specialist Sergei Zubov as the Rangers look to bolster a roster that is not especially imposing.

    *

Christopher Higgins, the winger acquired from Montreal last week in the Scott Gomez trade, has signed a one-year deal for $2.25M. . . . Ryan Callahan (who joined Zherdev in filing for salary arbitration), Brandon Dubinsky and Lauri Korpikoski remain unsigned Group II free agents.

    Avery made todays Daily News
in the " Gatecrasher " section:

    - Sean Avery knows how to get a reaction from the ladies. The New York Ranger spent an entire class at Ride the Zone in East Hampton over the weekend, cycling without his shirt - before he even got sweaty - to show off his bod. "It was very distracting," our overheated spy reported. "His body is insane!" Just like his ego, apparently

    Rangers add Kotalik
The Rangers announced today that they have signed 30 year-old winger Ales Kotalik to a three-year, $9 million contract.

Kotalik posted 20 goals and 23 assists in splitting time between the Buffalo Sabres and Edmonton Oilers.

This signing may signal the end of the Nik Zherdev era as the Rangers offered Zherdev a little over $3 million before he filed for arbitration.

This move marks the continued renovation of the Rangers offense as Kotalik will join Chris Higgins, and Marian Gaborik as high profile forwards that the Rangers have added this offseason.

    More tonight...

im completely frazzled with the latest signings and such.

where exactly do we stand at / under / or over the cap space at this juncture ?

do we have any more latitude to make / sign any more players ?

have we " cleaned up the home kitchen " w/all of our restricted free agents ? ( ie : Callahan was up for this if i remember correctly )

Losing Gomez' gargantuan contract served us well, but going and gettingthese latest signings may have wiped that out.

I remember someone posting a website dedicated to NHL Cap Spaces and the Teams. Can we get a repeat post of this?

    Thanks fellas .
