They've played seven already, and there may be as many as seven more to go. But today, there is one last game to bridge the regular season to the post-season for the Rangers and Devils. Today, the two trans-Hudson rivals play one last regular season qualifier to determine pole position for the playoff series that begins later this week. The Rangers have to win to get home ice advantage, but they have to win in regulation -- adding a fourth overtime or shootout win over the Devils will not do the trick. Look for them to treat a tie late in regulation time like a one goal deficit and pull the goalie in favor of an extra attacker.

Bathgate, who will turn 76 in August, is the fourth-leading goal-scorer and point-producer in Rangers history. He won the Hart Trophy in 1959 on a team that didn't qualify for the playoffs. From 1956-57 through 1962-63, he finished second in the Art Ross race twice; third twice; and fourth three times. He was a first- or second-team All-Star four times in an era when that meant bumping Gordie Howe, Rocket Richard or Boomer Geoffrion from the chart.
Howell, who will turn 76 in December, was booed out of the captaincy in the mid-'50s but became popular enough to have been given a "Nite" by the team in 1966-67. He wore the Blueshirt in more games, 1,160 of them, than any player in franchise history. Good luck Rangers in the playoffs. I still can't believe my Canes tanked when it counted. Our motto next year won't be "win more games" but "lose more games in OT/shootout. Only 3 teams in the East won more games than we did, but we had so many regulation losses. No playoff hockey. This sucks! I guess I need to find a team to root for in the playoffs now. Any suggestions?
