this was the best game i've seen all year, although ted nolan didn't seem to think everyone on his team competed the right way, which might be understandable considering his team set a record for shots allowed.
here's an interesting stat i dug up while flipping through the game notes:
in their previous six games with 40-plus shots, the Rangers had not won any of them. Among them were the loss to Columbus and Philadelphia and a 7-4 loss to the Islanders in December..Reading 2004
Albany 2006 Camden 2006 E. Rutherford 2, 2006 Inglewood 2006,
Chicago 2007

best game any of us ( NYR ) fans have seen all year.
X, it sounded like the Garden was rocking allright, clearly heard it thru the horrible versus transmission.
did you pick this impression up off of Nolan in the post game interviews ?
is there a reason that tom renney keeps selecting to shoot first in the shootouts ?
i hope Hossa will be okay for playing- hes really played well the last few weeks. From what they said tonight, Shanny shoulkd be back soon.
That was super intense game, for sure.
They have some tough physical players ( Witt , Simon, Hill ) hope we can keep up .
Got a really good eye on Mara ( next to another NYR- a smaller version ) that guy has some bulk- hes a big boy. Same thing with Isbister- another big boy. He was strong on the puck tonight- for sure.
Cannot wait till Thursday Night- absolutely gigantic game. For the ones who had a notion, a notion deep inside

Speaking as a Cane fan, we miss the hell out of Cullen in the shootout. He owned in the shootout for us last year. Along with Whitney, we were just about guaranteed 2 goals outa 3 last year.
Only saw a little of the game last night. Wishing now I had watched the whole thing. Sounds like it was a good one.Brian0 -

Hopefully they won't!
Great game. I can't believe the amount of shots the Rangers got, and to only let up 1 goal, I'll give DiP credit. Can't wait for Thursday night!

then its gotta be my TimeWarnerCable reception.
This is the 3rd or 4th time this season, including when the games have been on " MSG 2 "
fuckfaces.
from todays NYDN:"The guys were sitting around reading articles about how guys like (Islanders defenseman) Brendan Witt have taken the toll of the game to the Rangers over the course of the season," Rangers winger Sean Avery said after his first taste of the rivalry, in which the Islanders had won the first four meetings this season. "I could see it. And I think guys just made a decision that it wasn't going to happen.
"And we took the game to them and played them hard and DiPietro stood on his head. And he's going to have to do the same thing Thursday because we're going to be coming."
The Rangers had to keep coming at DiPietro last night because he refused to *yield.

THE SKINNY
Pavel Kubina
Maple Leafs Defenseman heal thyself
Mar 6 - The spirit of Bobby Baun lives on in Toronto, albeit in Pavel Kubina's finger.
The Leafs defenseman told the Toronto Sun that he's itchin' to return to action Tuesday night against Washington, just 10 days after fracturing a finger that was supposed to have him miss two to three weeks.
"With Tomas Kaberle out, there is no time for injuries," Kubina told the Sun. "It's still pretty sore, but I'm hoping I'll be able to play. It's like playoffs now and it has been difficult on me to be out again (after an early-season knee injury). There is no time to wait." Kubina, who has missed 21 games this season because of injuries, had the finger taped heavily in practice and told the Sun he was hoping to tape it or freeze it because it's still painful to shoot hard and pass.
The Leafs were two points out of the final playoff spot in the East after Monday.

Alexei Kovalev
Canadiens Kovalev does damage control
Mar 6 - As if the Canadiens don't have enough problems in their fight to make the playoffs, F Alexei Kovalev was forced to explain some inflammatory remarks attributed to him by a Russian sports magazine.
Kovalev told the Montreal media on Monday that he did not make any of the comments. According to the Montreal Gazette, Kovalev's alleged interview with Moscow-based weekly Football-Hockey included the following:
Canadiens coach Guy Carbonneau doesn't like Russian players, and he mishandled struggling F Sergei Samsonov.
Francophone players get preferential treatment from Carbonneau.
The team is divided, partially by language, into cliques in the dressing room.
Creative players are being stifled by the Canadiens' defensive style.
"I'm not a stupid person. I'm not stupid enough to say something behind your back. If I have something against the team, I'll say it to (them)," Kovalev told the media, including the Gazette.
Carbonneau said he met with Kovalev on Monday and said he believed the player's denial.
"We had a good conversation this morning. I can read people pretty good. If he's lying, he's a good liar," Carbonneau told the Gazette.

Tomas Kaberle
Maple Leafs When will Kaberle return?
Mar 6 - Although Maple Leafs GM John Ferguson said he hoped Tomas Kaberle can return from a concussion, neck soreness and back spasms in a week to 10 days, the Toronto defenseman's agent told the Globe and Mail that might be too optimistic.
"I don't think it's appropriate to give a timetable because there never is one with cases like this," Rick Curran, Kaberle's agent, told the Globe and Mail. "Every incident is different. Whenever you begin to speculate on a time frame with something like this, it's always best to be extremely conservative.
"If somebody is suggesting seven to 10 days, you have to look at that as a minimum. You hope that as time progresses, with the rest, the person will wake up and all of a sudden feels better. But there doesn't appear to be any rhyme or reason [for recovery]. It differs for each person."
Kaberle was injured when he was nailed head-first into the boards on a late hit by Cam Janssen of the Devils.

Darius Kasparaitis
Rangers Kasparaitis suffers setback
Mar 6 - D Darius Kasparaitis' future with the Rangers, and perhaps in the NHL, is uncertain.
Newsday reports that Kasparaitis was hospitalized briefly for shortness of breath after practice last week with the Hartford Wolf Pack and was given an indefinite leave of absence from the Rangers' AHL affiliate Monday.
Kasparaitis, 34, left the ice and was on the bench sobbing and being consoled by coaches, according to the paper.
The Rangers are on the hook for $3M next season but must be considering a buyout. Kasparaitis has had trouble coming back from offseason abdominal surgery and cleared waivers after playing 24 games for the Rangers.

Islanders Rangers?
Islanders Hoping for Ryan
Mar 5 - Everyone's still talking about the reported $500,000 gap between LW Ryan Smyth's agent and the Oilers's final $27M offer that led to his trade to the Islanders last week.
The Detroit News said "the guess is" Smyth will get a deal worth $6M per year or more and that the Rangers will join the Islanders at the front of the line of bidders.
Rangers GM Glen Sather drafted Smyth when he was GM of the Oilers.
As for the Islanders having an edge in re-signing him and perhaps choosing the adventure of a different lifestyle for him and his wife, Smyth told Newsday: "I'm not worried about anything right now except for winning and getting in the playoffs. My wife's back on the Island checking things out maybe for a place to rent right now and sort of get the survey of the land. Time will tell what happens."0 -
