TORONTO (CP) - Mark Messier will be a slam dunk when the Hockey Hall of Fame selection committee meets Thursday.

Messier heads a formidable group of players who are eligible for the first time, including Ron Francis, Scott Stevens, Al MacInnis, Adam Oates, Igor Larionov and Claude Lemieux.

Four is the usual maximum in any one year so the committee will have a tough task paring the list. There is no doubt, however, that Messier will quickly be tabbed for November induction into the hockey shrine.

For 25 years until his retirement three years ago, Messier carved an incredible NHL career. Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux and Messier were the big three of their era.

Messier's combination of power, skill and speed reminded hockey oldtimers of Gordie Howe. He was an awesome sight as he flashed down the ice. Pity the checker who got in his way. Opponents knew better than to mess with Mess, or Moose as he was sometimes referred to by teammates.

There was always a look of fierce determination in his eyes and former Oilers coach Glen Sather once put it in perspective.

''They talk about Maurice Richard,'' Sather said. ''Well, Mark has the same look.''

He's 46 now and would love to get back into the big league in a managerial role, but first he'll be feted for his on-ice accomplishments. He was one of the greatest leaders in NHL history, and he did it all after being a third-round draft pick, 48th overall.

Mark John Douglas Messier of St. Albert, Alta., turned pro when he was only 17, spending a year in the World Hockey Association before it was absorbed into the NHL. He earned six Stanley Cup rings beginning in Edmonton in 1984, when he was named playoff MVP. He'd win four more titles with the Oilers, capping the run in 1990 two years after pal Gretzky had been dealt to Los Angeles.

He won the Hart Trophy as regular-season MVP and the Pearson Award as the outstanding player in the eyes of his peers in 1989-1990, at the end of his second-last season with the Oilers, and again in 1991-1992, his first season with the New York Rangers.

When the six-foot-one centre led the Rangers to the championship in 1993-94, ending a 54-year NHL title drought, he became the first player to captain two different franchises to Stanley Cup glory.

In all, he played 1,756 regular-season NHL games, scoring 694 goals and assisting on 1,193 for 1,887 points. He also was assessed 1,910 penalty minutes. On the all-time lists, he is seventh in goals, third in assists and second in points. Gretzky was the only player in league history to amass more points.

Messier was routinely at his best in the playoffs. In 236 post-season games, he produced 109 goals and 186 assists for 295 points - he's No. 2 in the record book, behind only Gretzky, on all three counts - and he was assessed 244 penalty minutes. He holds the record for most short-handed playoff goals (14).

Messier appeared in 15 all-star games.

He helped Canada win the Canada Cup tournaments of 1984, 1987 - it was in that one that his role as a leader was driven home - and 1991. He also captained the 1996 World Cup team. The only snub of his career was in 1998 when he was left off Canada's Olympic team.<

Messier spent three seasons with the Vancouver Canucks in the late '90s before returning to the Rangers to complete his career. He settled in Hilton Head, S.C., afterwards.

On Jan. 12, 2006, the Rangers held a ceremony to honour Messier before a game against the Oilers and raised his No. 11 high above the ice in Madison Square Garden.

In November 2006, the NHL created the Mark Messier Trophy, a monthly leadership award.

On Feb. 27, 2007, his number also was retired by the Oilers at Rexall Place. Fittingly, Gretzky's Phoenix Coyotes were in town, and Messier glided onto the ice in full uniform carrying the Stanley Cup.

Messier's son Lyon, 19, played defence last season for the Texas Tornado in an American junior league.

He and fiancee Kim Clark have two children. Douglas Paul will be four in July while Jacqueline Jean turns two in August.

Messier, as gregarious off the ice as he was serious on it, had the lead role in a popular commercial that was aired during the Stanley Cup playoffs this year. He has also worked as a studio analyst during NHL games on U.S. cable television.

A rink in St. Albert bears his name while a section of northbound road between Edmonton and suburb of St. Albert was renamed to Mark Messier Trail last February.

A plaque in the Hockey Hall of Fame will soon bear his name and image, too.

    Prospects Impress at Development Camp
Twenty skaters and four goalies took to the ice this morning at the MSG Training Center for the second day of Prospect Development Camp -- all of the player expected to be here are here except Marc Staal, who is expected to arrive tomorrow. The coaching staff put the fourteen Ranger prospects and ten other invitees (most of whom are trying out for jobs in the fall) through a series of drills during the morning skate before sending them off for lunch and dry land training this afternoon. The players who stood out, at least to this observer, at least against their peers among Ranger prospects, were Bobby Sanguinetti, Ryan Hillier, Billy Ryan, and Mike Busto (for his physical play).

Of course all eyes were on the newest Ranger first round draftee, Alexei Cherepanov. When people wanted to know about him, coach Tom Renney, who is seeing him skate in person for the first time, said, "I want to know myself. It sure sounds by the description of him as a player that we've got ourselves a real good player. I'm just getting educated on him myself. We had him circled as a very high prospect, certainly higher than 17th. For a very young track record, he looks promising. His puck skills are at elite level -- but everything he's got on is brand new, everything, from the socks inside his skates."

Fellow Russian forward Artem Anisimov, drafted in the second round lastyear, is in camp too, with Renney getting his first live look at him on the ice as well. "I like him," he said. "I like his size, his range, his mobility, his thought process. He's going to be a big strong guy as he matures. These are two pretty good players for our organization." The Rangers are trying to get Anisimov over to North America this fall. "That's part of the plan," Renney said. "From what I can gather, we're making that attempt." Neither player speaks English, and there was no interpreter on hand, so we could not talk to them directly.

A year ago, Bobby Sanguinetti was the center of attention at Prospect Development Camp, days after being the Rangers' first round pick, and known to have grown up rooting for Brian Leetch and the Rangers. This year, Sanguinetti is just another young hopeful going about his business of furthering his hockey career. "He looks like a veteran out here," Renney said. "A veteran at a prospect camp. His skating's good. You can tell he's been through it a couple of times. A little stint at Hartford at the end of the year helped him. He's not taking anything for granted -- he's always working, he's doing a good job. He's a young player at a tough position to play, so we're going to get him as much exposure as we can." Which means Sanguinetti is almost certainly heading back to the OHL for one more year.

Renney was asked about this year's second round pick, goalie Antoine Lafleur, and why the Rangers selected him when they already a young star in net in Henrik Lundqvist and an even younger potential star goalie in Al Montoya. "He's a good young goaltender," Renney replied. "He was the next best player available to us in the draft. It enhances your asset value in general. And we also got some good skaters beyond him [later in the draft]." Asked whether anyone has caught his eye during the first two days of this camp, he said, "Some kids come in with a little more wherewithal, some are like a deer in the headlights. [But] this is just a prospect camp -- we're trying to teach them things to help them improve their game. This is not an evaluation camp."

Turning toward the upcoming free agent season, which begins Sunday July 1st at noon, Renney reiterated that the Rangers will be looking to fill holes at the center ice position and on the blue line with a power play specialist. He has not yet reached out to impending free agent Michael Nylander, even though GM Glen Sather has given him the green light to do so. "The opportunity has been there, but I haven't seized it yet," he said. "I'm reluctant because... I'm gonna let him know how we feel about him, [but] he knows how we feel about him -- it's redundant." He wouldn't comment on whether any of Nylander's teammates have talked to him about staying, specifically Jaromir Jagr.

Renney confirmed that Karel Rachunek will become a free agent Sunday after not having been tendered a qualifying offer (the only Ranger RFA not tendered a QO). Although he didn't rule out Rachunek being re-signed at a lower salary, he spoke as if the Rangers are likely to look elsewhere for help on defense. "Forecasting where we might be down the road," he explained, "[We want to] make sure opportunity exists internally for some people who are knocking on the door. And it give us some latitude should we decide to go that way," he went on, referring to a possible UFA signee.

Darius Kasparaitis was in the building , in T-shirt (Rangers) and shorts, looking trim and fit, and happy. He said he's been working out over the summer playing hockey at Chelsea Piers, where every time he passes the puck, he gets it right back. It was weird feeling,he said, making him feel like Jaromir Jagr. He then went off to the viewing platform where Sather and Renney were watching the activity on the ice. Prospect camp continues through Friday. We will be back here to cover the closing day's scrimmage.

Report: Rangers, Nylander close to contract
    TheFourthPeriod.com

The New York Rangers appear to be on the verge of signing center Michael Nylander to a long-term contract.
According to Swedish newspaper Expressen, Nylander expects the two sides to reach an agreement in the near future.

"It can be solved at any minute now," Nylander told the paper, which was translated into English by a Swedish-based member of TFP.

"There interest is mutual, I like the team and the team likes me. I have had two really good seasons in New York, and I would like that to continue."

Nylander, who made $2.28 million last season, tallied a career-high 26 goals, 57 assists and 83 points in 2006-07.
The native of Stockholm, Sweden, fired his former agent (Paul Theofanaous) in April after he negotiated a three-year deal with the Rangers, without Nylander's consent. The 34-year-old recent hired Mike Gillis to represent him.

"I had my reasons to switch agent. Now I am working with Mike Gillis, who is a real professional and is negotiating a good deal."

Calls made to Gillis were not immediately returned.

    Nylander Close to Contract Extension
Michael Nylander told the Swedish newspaper Expressen that he expects to come to agreement with the Rangers on a contract extension within the next few days. With direct quotes from Nylander, this report appears legitimate, unlike the same paper's report after the playoffs that restricted free agent Henrik Lundqvist had agreed to a contract extension. The report's lede emphasizes the Jaromir Jagr factor, highlighting Nylander's knowledge that his success depends heavily on staying together with his high-scoring right winger.

Jagr himself was in London to watch two of his Czech friends compete in Wimbeldon. But he was not happy about the cold wet weather. "One can’t enjoy it, it’s terribly cold here," Jagr told iDNES in Czech (thanks again to DaTeL for the translation). "It was a nice match to watch, though. Hingis was close to losing it but then turned it around. She’s a warrior. But I was shaking from the cold and crouching under the space heater. I had to go hide soon. I’m supposed to be with Team Jagr in [Czech] on Friday. It’s obvious now that I will make it."

Even under such circumstances, Jagr's trademark humor was intact. As the article reports, "When asked for an interview, he answered jokingly, 'But gentleman, it’s raining! And I don’t give interviews when it’s raining.' As he was walking from one court to another, people constantly asked him for his autograph or picture. He denied no one. 'There are many Czechs here -- I am surprised. Or take the Japanese woman over there -- she spoke to me in Czech!'"

He can rest easy now that his center appears ready to come back into the fold before hitting the open market. But what of the Rangers' other star right winger, Brendan Shanahan? He continues to work out with Scott Gomez, one of the free agents the Rangers plan to target as his center. With Nylander returning, the Rangers' task becomes easier, since they only have to target one big time center, not two. ESPN's Scott Burnside says Shanahan might consider playing in Toronto or Ottawa if the Rangers choose not to re-sign him. Then again, Burnside doesn't even consider Nylander a free agent (and his article was written long before today's report out of Sweden). Kevin Allen of USA Today has a more complete list of UFAs for you to consider.

    i , for one , ..... liked the guy.

when at the top of his game he was throwing around some pretty wicked hipchecks , he always seemed to have a funny thing to say, but then his play started slipping and as we all know he was cut loose.

Even after all that , the fact that the guy still shows his face around the NYR camp ( looking trim and wearing NYR gear ) is pretty commendable, but i doubt he will be able to compete for a spot with the youth movement in full swing and 6the Free Agent signings looming.

Darius is a huge Pearl Jam fan, I met and talked with him at the Pearl Jam show ( night 1 ) at MSG , back in 2003 .
