well, Tampa just lost Crawford and Longoria, likely both for the rest of the season. Couple that with the fact that their pitchers have never thrown this deep into the year (at least competitvely) and could be tiring. I have thought all year that Tampa was "for real". But losing Longoria and Crawford---that's brutal. Thier 2 best bats. Hell, their 2 best non-Kazmir players. Kicks a door wide open, let's see if this injury riddled $200 million behemoth has a heart

The thing is there aren't that many games left.

If the Rays go .500 the rest of the way (23-22), that gives them a 94-68 record.

For the Sox to tie the Rays, they have to go 26-17 down the stretch.

For the yanks to tie the Rays, they have to go 31-12 down the stretch.

good point. Amazing that they have both underperformed (sucked) so much this year. Who was pitching for The Twins toight? 2004 Johan Santana or Glen Perkins?

I know this should be on the Red Sox thread, but I don't think the Sox have underperformed. They're still on pace to win 93 games. Last year they won 96 and were much healthier than this year's team.

I also don't think the Yanks underperformed as much as expectations were too high with a shaky rotation going into the season.

I know that your math can't be disputed. But I don't like looking at it that way. The way I look at it---win today, and hopefully pick up a game. Then it's 8 games back. Same for tomorrow, and then it's 7. Take it one day at a time. If the 2007 Phillies looked at it your way with 17 to play, they would have been making golf reservations in mid September.

if they go 10-8, we have to go 17-0. If they go 8-10, we have to go 15-2. And yet, they did it.

Tampa has only 2 real tough stretches in their schedule. 6 games next week with the Angels (home) and White Sox (road)

and then a hellish stretch to open September 16 of 19 games with the Red Sox, Yanks, and Twins.

If they go .500 during those stretches, the division is theirs.

I know what you're saying that anything can happen, but as a math and stat geek, it's definitely a tall order for the Rays to not make the post season at this point.

Obviously anything is possible but since 1996 when they played the first 162-game season with three divisions, only two division leaders that had at least 70 wins by August 15 have failed to make the playoffs. Out of 34 teams that fall into that classification, it has happened just five percent of the time and each time by the Seattle Mariners.

all it is, is just a few streaks..we pull off 4-5 in a row and Red Sox or Rays lose like 2 or 3 we're back to 5 or 4 games behind. NO need to stress yet..see yall in October

Bottom line, if this team doesn't hit like they should down the stretch then they will not be playing any playoff games. It's no secret that Posada and Matsui being out of the lineup is a BIG deal, but their absences don't account for the endless double plays this team is hitting into. It also doesn't explain all the runners left on base. It's put up or shut time for these guys.

Hughes pitching in the land of Dunder Mifflin tonight. Whether this team makes the playoffs or not, I really want to see him finish the year off healthy and pitching well for the Yanks.

Moose on the hill tonight going for #16. I'm still amazed at how well he has pitched this year.

the yanks need to set their sights on the wild card. i don't see tampa playing only .500 ball for the rest of the season, and i certaintly don't see the yanks going 31-12.

He would've had a hit up the middle. But Abreu was trying to steal second. And the second baseman was covering. So the ball went right to him.

Looks like Hank is blowing off the season.

"We're going to win it next year," he said. "If we need to add a top veteran pitcher, we'll do that. We'll do whatever we need to do. Next year we'll be extremely dangerous."

And it looks like the Yanks are going to use every last dollar of that 88 mil or so coming off the payroll and then some. ;)
