  • another thing, I like Joe Torre as much as anyone but I have to say that I'm bothered hearing that players like Damon and Abreu weren't in shape at the start of 2007. Obviously it's their job to get in shape but it's also the managers job to conduct workouts that get them in shape and it appears Torre didn't do that, which is kind of an indictment on him.

i feel the same way. the theory at the time was that they needed a player's manager to balance all the egos. joe girardi is not a player's manager, and i think there was some concern that he'd lose the clubhouse.

but so far, everyone seems to be on board with his program. even mussina apparently looks like he's been working out. from what i've read, it seems like a more motivated group this year. that could make for an exciting season. maybe girardi was just what they needed.

i also like the way he pays attention to the minor league prospects. torre didn't even know who joba was until the yankees called him up.

i'm not trying to bash torre, but i just really like the way girardi is handling things right now.

speaking of joba, it's a little early to be calling someone the next joba isn't it. i saw this in the star-ledger.

oh yeah... nardi contreras has been using that label since last fall. it seems a little unfair to call anybody "the next joba."

it sounds like they think mark melancon is the real deal. he was one of the top college closers in '06, but he's never pitched above short-season A-ball and he spent all of '07 recovering from tommy john surgery.

it's hard to imagine him making an impact in '08.

maybe late 2009 or 2010, but either way, it's nice to read that the cycle might not end with kennedy, chamberlain and hughes.

Agreed. i think Torre's lackadaisacal approch was a big reason for the slow starts of the past few years. 2005, i think they were 11-19 or so when the brought up Wand and Cano. And lastyear, i think they were 21-29 or so. I bet they get off to a hot start this year. No more Camp Country Club

    To translate:

I (Da or The Kid) got his plan four the last season at Yankee Stadium. He's definitely going to the home opener as well as the last regular season game. Yes, I said regular season game played at the stadium. What do you think there aren't going to be postseason games in the Bronx?? Wake up people, LOL.

It should be interesting how Joba handles the new role with Hughes?

I started reading them......how do I know who to pick...I have an idea of who I want but what if someone picks who I want..can people in our league pick more that one person....and is it just us picking between the players or everyone in the world with a fantasy team picking.....

    those were my main questions:)

I will say a prayer for him. My dad had scar tissue after he had chemo. Hopefully that's what it is for Bobby.

It works just like a real draft. The 12 teams in our league take turns chosing a player for their team one round at a time until the rosters are full. Once a player is drafted, he is on that team and can't be drafted by another team. However, you can release players and pick up new ones from the waiver wire throughout season or make trades with other teams. You aren't "stuck" with the original team you draft.
On the night of the draft (about 30 mins before the draft) there will be a link on the league home page that you click to enter the draft room. It really is simple. You will catch on quickly.

Igawa gave up 4 runs. 1 hit. 2bb and a hit batter in 1 inning. And Chamberlain, Kennedy and Hughes each got 2 k's.

"cy" igawa gave up a grand slam to a college kid who was playing in his first game since 2005 (due to a major shoulder injury).

  • the yankees looked good today. 9-3 win over the phillies.

wang looked alright. he wasn't as sharp as i would like to see, but the results were there. 2 IP, 1 H (a ryan howard double), 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.

shelley duncan went 2-3 with a HR, 2B, and 5 RBI. a-rod, betemit, and jesus montero also hit HRs. montero's was to the opposite field. that kid is strong.
  • harsh criticism of torre and guidry:

    http://www.northjersey.com/sports/yankees/16100902.html
He doesn't get in people's faces. He doesn't do fiery team meetings. He operates on trust, believes in self-reliance. The Yankees unwittingly took advantage of the honor system last year; everyone seemed too comfortable, especially after failing to win the World Series for the seventh straight time. Even Torre's supporters in the organization admit Joe's stewardship had become too casual, evidenced by his naming Ron Guidry as pitching coach. "It was obvious all [Torre] was doing was taking care of a buddy," said one Yankee inside. "Finally, we have someone here [Dave Eiland] who knows what he's doing."

  • I agree with most of the article, but not about torre naming Guidry as pitching coach to "take care of a buddy". It's not like Torre and Guidry go way back. The extent of their relationship was probably just spring training, when Guidry woudl be a special instructor. I think the Guidry hiring actually came from above Joe's head. That said, I think Eiland's going to excellent. I've been hearing great things about his work on the farm for a few years now.

Well hopefully Tabata will replace either Gardner or Cabrera in that outfield.
  • If all goes well, I can see an OF of Jackson, Gardner and Tabata in 2009, maybe 2010.

Gardner's the quickest, so CF for him. Leadoff also. He's been called a Juan Pierre who can walk type player. To me, watching all these kids come up, and play a huge role on teh team, is so much better than signing top free agents. I hope this keeps up.
