I heard on the radio the other day that tix for the final regular season game at The Stadium were listing for as much as $17,000 online. Don't they know that there will be more games in the Bronx during the postseason? Tix for last game at Shea were listing for as high as $3,500 I think.
the yankees lost top catching prospect francisco cervelli to a broken wrist yesterday when tampa bay minor leaguer elliot "pete rose" johnson decided that it was appropriate to run him over in a spring training game.
cervelli was viewed as the primary in-house candidate to eventually replace jorge posada. he'll be out 8-10 weeks.
“I like Joe. I’ve always liked Joe. If he would like to have a conversation, I’d like to talk about politics, I’m good with global warming; I’m good with a lot of different topics on a daily basis. I like iTunes, I download some stuff off iTunes, I like different restaurants; I like red wine. I have a lot of different areas I can go conversationally.’’
what a worthless piece of shit. maybe he should focus on trying to win more than 70 games in a season. you'd think it wouldn't be that difficult when your team has the number one overall draft pick every single year.
meanwhile, phil hughes threw four scoreless innings today. he gave up no hits and two walks (both in the fourth inning).

First of all, that was a bush play. I know the kids trying to make the team, but you don't run over a catcher in spring training. Regular season game, yeah, clean play.
2nd of all, Maddon just pretty much guaranteed that one of his better players will get one i the ear at some point this year.
ETA:From the same blog BettreManning NYG linked from. There aren't too many guys I respect in baseball more than Ron Gardenhire.
A few enterprising New York reporters went over to ask a neutral party, Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire, what he thought.
Gardenhire said such a play is not the norm for spring training but he can understand how it happens.
“It’s instinctive,” he said. “But you’re sad to see somebody get hurt like that in spring training.”
Gardenhire said he doesn’t put on any contact plays in spring training or bring his infield in. He also warns his third base coach not to take any unnecessary risks that could result in collisions.

i guess it's not the kid's fault. he was just following orders. the rays (god that's an awful name) are an organization that breeds attitude problems, and this is an example of why. this was the second time in less than a week that they made headlines for running over a catcher. it seems like they take pride in playing baseball the wrong way.
what really bothers me is joe maddon's response. he may have ruined the career of a promising 22-year old, and all he has to say about it is a bunch of sarcastic bullshit about itunes and red wine. baseball doesn't need losers like him.
i'll bet that josh hamilton, delmon young, and elijah dukes would have turned out much differently if they had been developed by a competent organization. such a waste of talent...
ron gardenhire is definitely a class act. he sounded like he was impressed by hughes today, too. i hope bill smith was taking notes.
funny thing is, i read a few weeks ago that they shipped out Dukes and Young beacuse they didn't want those 2 to have a negative influence on uber prospect Evan Longoria. Like it was okay for them to ruin the team for everyone else in years past.
And speaking of the Rays, how about Carl Crawford as the Yankees leadoff man and LF on Opening Day of the new stadium. He's a free agent at the end of the year, though Tampa may hold an option on him. Not like they'll pay him anyway

they'll pay him if they think they can compete in '09. with david price in the rotation, they could be damn good. that kid can pitch. i'd trade joba for him right now. but knowing the rays, they'll find a way to screw it all up...
i definitely wouldn't mind seeing crawford in pinstripes, but let's see how melky, tabata, ajax, and gardner do this year. if all goes well, they might not even need crawford.
Question about Crawford. As fast as he is, why doesn't he play CF?
Nice to see Hughes throwing 4 hitless innings today. I imagine he was a little extra amped playing against the Twins even if it was just a preseason game.

That's the way baseball is now. It's ok to hit someone, or start shit, but if the other team retaliates, they get tossed. It's bullshit. That's why guys like Manny Ramirez and Pedro get away with the shit they do. Years ago, If manny pulled his self-admiration bulllshit, the next guy up gets one between the numbers. And he's not pissed at the pitcher, who did what he had to do, he's pissed at Manny for forcing the pitcher's hand. Same with Pedro. one day he sent the Yankees's firts 2 hitters to the ER, but the Yankees knew if one of their pitchers plunked someone they would get tossed. It's bulshit.
that's because there a bunch of scumbags...that slide was DIRTY
But how many times does one get ejected for a hard slide. And the pitch to Evan Longoria hardly touched him. As far as I've heard. I haven't seen the video yet. Either way Yanks/Rays games won't be boring now. And I'm glad the Yanks aren't gonna take crap from other teams.

that wasn't a hard slide
he was thrown out for attempt to injure
he deliberatly dove so that his leg was in the air when he hit second base and it would go directly into the fielder's mid-section with his spikes up
he did this last year against Toronto
that's dirty and he should get a ball under the chin for that
to say that that is commendable is ridiculous

yeah, that's how i feel too. but of course ESPN wants to talk about what a dirty play it was and about how it isn't representative of the "yankee way." what a load of bullshit! what the fuck is the yankee way? not retaliating? ever? like the way they did things for 12 years under joe torre? fuck that! everyone just expects the yankees to lie down when they get fucked with. not anymore...
and here's another priceless quote from joe maddon:

this will be fun. hes almost 60! i am anxious to see how he does haha.
I know. I wish I could go. I wonder if they'll open the black seats.
i don't like that it would be the last game. i'd still consider going though.
but on new year's day? that's rough. i already have a scheduled hangover to sleep off. better make it a night game...
