some facts and figures from tonight's Yankees game

The Yankees are 43-21 since the break, 36-14 in the last 50 home games and 21-9 at the Stadium since the break

Jorge Posada played in his 1423rd game. That's 19th place on the Yankees list, not necessarily a significant number but he tied Thurman Munson. Also he is 11-for-17 with three walks in his last 20 plate appearances at home and batting .432 (19-for-44) this month.

Phil hughes battled early, tired late but in between held the opposing team to two runs or less for the third straight start

Bobby Abreu - of his last 19 hits, 14 have been of the extra base hit variety

    So how does it work,
how many more games do the Yanks have to win, can they get the AL East title?

how many more games would Boston have to win?

or when could we clinch the wild card?

they can catch boston, no doubt. all they have to do is win, and the sox have to lose. i think we're 2.5 behind boston now, and i think they're magic number is still 9, so if they win 9 or more, the division is theirs.

as far as wild card goes, if we win just 6 of the remaining games and detroit wins the rest of theirs, we'll be tied.

i'm pretty sure that's how it's looking right now. as far as i'm concerned (and i'm sure all other yankee fans think this way too), fuck wild card.

we still have a chance at taking the division. boston's magic number is 9. so 5 wins from them and 4 losses from us and they're in. Ours is 7 for the wild card.

I would like us to take the division too but as long as we get in the playoffs that's all I care about!

yea but they don't have to win 9. it could be a combination of wins and losses. if the yanks and sox both win tommorow the number would be 8.

oh right, combination of wins and losses
so we have to keep winning

what I am wondering is how many do we have to win to take the division.. they have to lose at least 2 more and we have to win 2 to tie for 1st, right?

    how many games are left?

I think if that happened we would be a half game back. the yanks have one make up game on Monday against the Blue Jays. 11 for the yanks and 10 for boston. If we end up tied at the end of the season. We would win the division cuz the yanks won the season series i believe.

They showed it at the end of tonights game. Sox have 10 left, Yankees have 11. Yankees are 10-8 against Boston this year, so if I remember right, the Yankees would win the division if they finished tied based on that, so long as both teams are in the playoffs. (If the Tigers staged a miraculous comeback and had more wins than the tied Yankees and Sox, then there would be a 1 game playoff, ala 1978.) If The Yankees go 8-3, and Boston goes 6-4, the Yankees would win the division (I believe)

all i'm doing is typing what's on the yankees postgame notes and from tonight's game

The Yankees scored 10 runs for the 21st time this season.

Mussina made his 500th start and became the seventh pitcher with at least 10 wins in 16 straight seasons. He also has not allowed a run in consecutive starts for the first time since August 12-17, 2003.

Matsui's three RBI were his first three RBI game since August 19 vs. Detroit. He had four in his previous 16 games.

and having seen this and Torre's track record, I'd have to think Mussina will make a postseason start.

The only way there would be a 1 game playoff would be if the Tigers win the wild card. That way, the 2 teams would be tied for one playoff spot. But the way it is now, with both teams in the playoffs, they just use the season series as tiebreaker
