big Papi had all 5 RBI's in the game! Oy. It's always something with him. He's our "Aaron Boone'

Did you guys read about this thing that the team w/the best record in the AL East will get to pick btwn playing an 8 day ALDS or a 7 day ALDS in the 1st round? It was in yesterday's Post. Basically they can pick how many off days they have? or something like that

that is so ridiculous. every other year there has been one day off during the ALDS. that's how it should be. now it's gonna be either two or three?!? baseball is an everyday sport. why mangle the way the game is supposed to be played?

i really hope that they came up with this rule change before the season (and it just wasn't made public until now). i would hate to think that they determined something like this in mid-september after it was basically established who was going to have the best record. and furthermore, why exactly does it only affect the american league?

if they really want to stretch out the division series and improve it at the same time, they should make it a best of seven. a best of five series makes absolutely no sense following a 162-game regular season. and the league office has to be aware of this.

ok, well the post explained it a little better than michael kay did the other night...

but they think the red sox are gonna choose the extra day off. i'm not so sure about that...

i'm not going to elaborate though; the multiple red sox employees who lurk on this board can figure it out for themselves. ;)

DISCLAIMER: before anyone else brings it up, NO, i don't think they'd waste their time taking message board advice under any circumstances (especially from me). i'm still not gonna say anything though...

As a Red Sox fan, I think the Red Sox will choose to play the 7 day series instead of the 8 game series. So that should maximize Joba's effectiveness for the Yanks.

The reason I think they will choose the shorter series is the extra day to set up the rotation to begin the ALDS and also because Boston would rather have their top 4 starters go against the Indians or Angles top 4 starters.

If they choose an 8 day series, the Angels would pitch Lackey and Escobar 4 times in 5 games on full rest and the Indians would have Sabathia and Carmona 4 times in 5 games. By choosing the series with one less day, they would only face one of each pair twice on full rest.

From: The Lohud Yankees Blog (Thanks for posting that site the other day guys. Superior info on there.)

UPDATE, 6:25 p.m.: Just spoke to Joe Torre and Roger Clemens. The Rocket is a go for Sunday after throwing 40 pitches in the bullpen. “The elbow is feeling fine,” Clemens said. “I’m the old guy here but I’m going to go out there and be effective.”

Molina is catching Kenedy tonight and Matsui is DHing so Posada gets the night off.

Caughts some of an interview with Donnie Baseball on XM today. He talked about A-Rod and how hard he practices and works in the weight room etc. to stay strong and flexible. He said the other reason that he is having such an amazing season is because he made up his mind before the season to just have fun.

If Melky catches Frank Thomas' hit ball like he should have. Kennedy could be working on a no-hitter.

the jays broadcast had burnett hitting 98-100 on the arod at bat. i don't think he was throwing that hard, but he froze arod on that 3rd strike.

looking forward to watching kennedy pitch again. only saw him for an inning or two last week against kc and he looked decent.

Did you see Damon take a $20 from a fan in the stands in exchange for a ball? Then he ran over and gave the $20 to a kid. That was cool.

Why take Kennedy out? I guess Joe thinks 7 wins in a row is enough.

  • I have a baseball question that I really don't feel merits it's own thread, so I'll ask it here, where the smartest baseball fans hang. If you hit a sac fly, does it count against your OBP? I know it does not count against your batting average so I can't see how it would count against an on base %. Does it?

it does because the formula for on-base percentage is the following:

divide a player's total hits, walks, and hit by pitch by the total of at-bats, walks, hit by pitch, and sacrifice flies.

example let's say derek jeter in a four-game series has 10 hits, two walks and one hit by pitch in 25 at-bats, one sac fly

that would read 13 into 29

and 13 into 29 comes out an OBP of .448

  • wow, never knew that. Thanks for the info.
  • i think anything that constitutes a plate appearance will count and since sac flies, walks and being hit by pitches fall into that category, that's why they're included in the formula.

  • I just found the formula online and it's:

(Hits + Walks + Hit by Pitch) /
(At Bats + Walks + Hit by Pitch + Sacrifice Flies)

Now I'm no math major, but doesn't having HBP on the top and bottom line cancel each other out?

i would think so, but i'm really not sure. i'll ask next time i'm at a yankee game.

Nice blast by Jeter in the 1st. Good to see him with a big hit. He's been slumping and you know that knee is not in good shape.

I just read Britton being compared to Jared Lorenzen. It reminded me of a nickname I heard for Lorenzen the other day: "Pillsbury Throw Boy"

Sounds like Torre plans on using a 6 man rotation for the rest of the season with Wang and Pettitte on regular rest. That means we get to see more Ian Kennedy.
