bobby murcer also did opening day and played on oldtimers day. as for the ejection, just another example of these umpires. if charlie haeger is going to hit somebody on purpose, is he really going to do it with a 69 mph knuckleball?

the 13 home runs tie a team record for home runs in consecutive game. they also did it in a doubleheader in philadelphia on june 28, 1939.

    I was at opening day!

Did you stay up all night? Did you take a laptop to Chi-town X? Keep us posted if you can!

but as Yankee fans we should all hold our hats over our hearts today,

as we all have a heavy heart in remembering the tragic events that took place 28 years ago today, that abruptly and unexpectedly took our beloved Captain away from us, forever.

    RIP , Thurm.

They mentioned it on the game but I don't think on here yet. I think they said they're going to show the game from the night after it happened as a Yankee Classic.

    It was in 1979, Bathgate?

Murcer recalls winning one for Thurm

    By MICHAEL O'KEEFFE
    DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

    Thursday, August 2nd 2007, 9:06 AM

Thurman Munson was killed 28 years ago today in small plane crash.

The Yankees had traveled to Canton, Ohio, on the morning of Aug. 6, 1979, to bury their captain and All-Star catcher Thurman Munson, who had died four days earlier in a plane crash. Then the team flew back to New York for a game against the Baltimore Orioles that was broadcast on ABC's "Monday Night Baseball."

Bobby Murcer, who had broken down earlier in the day while delivering Munson's eulogy, came to the plate in the seventh inning with two out and men on second and third, with the Yankees trailing 4-0. An on-screen graphic noted that Murcer was 0-for-15 with two men on and two outs.

"Well, that says a lot, doesn't it?" Howard Cosell said dismissively, right before Murcer sent a home run into the right-field stands at the Stadium to make the score 4-3.

Murcer, who later hit a game-winning two-run single in the ninth inning to give the Yankees a 5-4 victory, may have been in the twilight of his career, but he wasn't about to say good-bye to one of his best friends without a proper send-off.

Today is the 28th anniversary of Munson's death, and as Murcer watched a DVD of that game yesterday with a group of reporters at the YES Network's Midtown studio, he slipped on sunglasses to hide the emotions stirred up decades after Munson's death.

"We were all emotionally drained," Murcer said. "We knew it was a big win not just for the Yankees but for Thurman Munson, too. It was a very good victory. The team needed a boost and the fans did, too.

"If Thurman had not been killed, he would have been in the Hall of Fame," Murcer added. "Thurman should be in the Hall of Fame."

Murcer and YES commentator Ken Singleton, who hit a home run for the Orioles that day, discuss Munson's legacy Monday night at 9 p.m., when YES broadcasts the game on "Farewell to the Captain," a special "Yankee Classics" program.

George Steinbrenner told Cosell during ABC's broadcast that the Yankees had considered canceling the game. But Diana Munson, the captain's widow, told the Yankee owner the game should go on - her husband had played through injuries and was not a quitter.

"Thurman was a great captain and a great leader," said Singleton, who participated in the event through a conference call. "Knowing Thurman was not with the team created a whole pall over New York City."

Catfish is a local hero where I grew up. I actually played against his oldest son in high school. It was sad to see him go at such a young age (Lou Gehrig's Disease). I was actually in New York traveling and heard the news on WFAN. I never really got to meet him, but I did get to know some of his family and they were all wonderful people and by all accounts he was too.
On a related note, how bad is "Bronx is Burning"!! I should have known better with ESPN doing it. I need to just go buy the book and read it.

Everyone see the news today that YES may be sold.

-wow about Catfish, RIP to him as well

-I like Bx is Burning. Someone else just said that to me last night, he didn't like it. He thought it was boring. I think it's pretty good. I like the historical aspects they throw in too. But I'm a history buff :)

I did see the news re: YES. That's interesting. Will they buy Michael Kay and make him go away too, while they're at it?

regarding the bronx is burning, wfan ran an interview with marty appell the other day. appell was a publicist for the yankees in those days and served as a consultant for the mini-series. Among the things he said in the interview was how they precisely nailed Steinbrenner's mannerisms.

I think Platt and Torturro are fine in the show. I guess I was just hoping for more about the other players. The whole thing, at least so far, seems to just be about Martin, Reggie, and The Boss with the occasional line from Mickie Rivers trying to borrow money from someone. I wanted some face time for Catfish for obvious reasons and from what I have heard there were some real characters on that team but they haven't explored them and the production values seem kinda low. ESPN has a huge budget yet their attempts to make movies haven't been very good. Don't be afraid to throw some money into something like this. I really have to read the book though. It does seem that they have tried to be historically accurate. Watching the Martin/Jackson dugout blowup you see the details are exactly like the film of the actual incident. I give them credit for that.

i think roger clemens needs to pull down his uniform pantlegs, and pull down the socks already
    ( when did this start ? )
perhaps the socks all the way up are cutting off the ciurculation leading up to his upper body and arm so he cannot throw dominantly the way we are used to seeing.

    get back to pitching rog

It doesn't seem to have a negative effect on A-Rod or Phillips. I like the old school look with the uniform pants pulled up. It makes you look like a ballplayer. To me the worst thing is the guys who wear them all the way down "underneath" and run their back spike through pant cuff. I don't get that. The only problem Roger has is he's 45 and his body can't quite do what it used to. He has pitched well and has only given up more than 4 runs twice. Is he overpaid? Hell yeah, but so is every player on the team except for maybe a couple of the young guys.

it is true that those guys (especially pitchers) get in so much of a routine that sometimes the littlest thing can throw them off

since im watching on TV didnt hear john sterlings call.

was it the usual a bomb call ?

they all came out of the dugout- a few hugged him as he crossed the plate- nice record for ARod- but theres talk of him hitting 900 homers in his career due to his young age - so this is just a stepping stone..

    nice job alex .

    also
YES showed the lucky fan who got / caught the 500th homer from A Riod . Security was escorting him----somehwere----

pretty safe to say this guy has now been upgraded to the VIP section of the stadium, no ? lucky SOB .

Hughes almost had it. I wonder what would've happened if the umpire had called Gathright's ball foul.
