  • it started in 1996. O'Neill and Bernie had a miscommunication on a fly ball and it fell in. The next inning, Bernie was pulled, but not O'Neill. Kay wenty inti the lockerrom after the game and asked why bernie was punished, and O'Neill wasn't. Torre ripped Kay a new one in front of the entire team, calling him Rona Barrett ( a famed gossip columnist). Kay was humiliated, and has carried a grudge since
Wow, that is interesting. never heard that story.
That is very unlike Torre. Presently he would never punish somebody as he did Bernie.

Sources told ESPN's Buster Olney that before Alex Rodriguez opted out of his contract with the Yankees earlier this week, the team was told that it would not be able to meet with the third baseman unless it presented an offer of at least $350 million.

350 million... that is crazy money for a guy who is what 31 years old alread?

Abreu's option picked up for next season.

I didn't see anything in the thread here, but you gotta love Andy Pettitte. His comments the other day make you respect him even more. Hopefully his choice will be to come back rather than hang em' up. It continues to amaze me that the Yanks once let him get away.

I've grown to dislike Michael Kay and John Sterling so much. I think they were much more tollerable when they were doing radio together. Their egos seemed to cancel each other out. Since then, both their heads have swelled like a couple of Thanksgiving Day parade floats. Maybe they should reunite the titans of annoyance and let them battle it out until one kills the other. Now that would be good radio. Just give Singleton the full time tv play by play role. YES has a full starting 9 of announcers over there anyway.

  • The Yankees made a few big mistakes when they let Charley Steiner go, and kept Sterling a few years back. They compounded that mistake by adding Waldman to the booth

Boras told Yankees they needed $350 million offer for meeting with Alex Rodriguez
By RONALD BLUM, AP Baseball Writer
    November 2, 2007

Rodriguez opted out of his US$252 million, 10-year contract with the Yankees on Sunday, Oct. 28, 2007 in what appears to be the end of his career with New York.
    AP - Oct 29, 12:05 am EDT

NEW YORK (AP) -- The Yankees were told by agent Scott Boras that they could not meet with Alex Rodriguez unless they presented an extension offer that guaranteed the star $350 million "as a floor."

Boras' remarks, first reported Friday by ESPN.com, were made Oct. 25 during a conversation between the agent and general manager Brian Cashman, a baseball official said Friday, speaking on condition of anonymity because those details were not made public.

Rodriguez had $81 million remaining over the final three years of his record $252 million, 10-year contract, and the deal contained an additional $10 million escalator. The Yankees were prepared to offer him an extension worth $25 million to $30 million a season for four or five years.

Boras then notified the Yankees on Sunday that the star third baseman was opting out of the contract to become a free agent.

Cashman declined to comment on the conversation, and Boras only would go into general details.

"We've made no offers to anyone and we have received no offers from anyone," Boras said. "I'm not going to respond."

New York said repeatedly that it would not negotiate with Rodriguez if he opted out.

"Brian's made it clear, and I've made it clear," Hank Steinbrenner, son of owner George Steinbrenner, said Friday.

  • His numbers may be missed, but he will not be. In fact, I believe the Yankees will continue the trend of teams getting better when AFRaud leaves.

Seattle 2000 with him 91 wins
    Seattle 2001 w/out him 116 wins

Texas 2003 with him 71 wins
    Texas 2004 w/out him 89 wins

This isn't a game or 2. 15 and 18 win improvements, after losing the supposed best player in baseball

  • doubt it. He said before signing for 2007 and again in the last few days that it's either the Yankees or retirement for him. 99.9 % of players, I'd say bullshit, but not with Andy. Sounds like the same $16 mil for one year deal is there for him should he decide to pitch in 2008. Declining the option just allows him more time to decide

Hopefully they can talk Andy into returning next season with the idea of helping to mentor Joba, Hughes, and Kenedy.

Wow! It's like Joe is getting the band back together our west. Bowa, Mattingly, and maybe Mazzili. Is he gonna drag Mel outa retirement to be his pitching coach too?

    Mel's Seattle's new pitching coach.

I think it's guaranteed they'll offer. that way they'll get compensatory draft picks from whoever signs him.

  • yeah, I saw that in the paper. By offering it, they get 2 picks (a 1st round, and a sandwich pick, between the 1st and 2nd round) If they didn't offer arbitration, they would get nothing.

No kidding? Oh wow. Good for him. I didn't know that. that's pretty cool. They said on the news on Channel 4 that Clemens is considering a coaching job w/the Astros. LOl-he can coach them how to hit someone w/a pitch!!! J/k.

They also said the Mets and Angels are talking to A-Rod's agent?
