I was sort of rootin' for Mattingly as the next manager.

  • I wonder if the job potentially going to Girardi had anything to do with the opt out. They say Girardi is very Showalter like (Which is fine by me) and that ARod didn't like Buck. If the Girardi info is accurate, I really hope Mattingly stays on, but I could see why he would leave.

    it's breaking news on nytimes.com

    he's such a liar, too

hallelujah, the jinx against the team is over! Praise the Lord!

  • yes, the bullshit has begun to ooze from Alex, as it so often does:

Boras said during a telephone interview Rodriguez made his choice because he was uncertain whether Mariano Rivera, Jorge Posada and Andy Pettitte would return to the Yankees.

"Alex's decision was one based on not knowing what his closer, his catcher and one of his statured pitchers was going to do," Boras said. "He really didn't want to make any decisions until he knew what they were going."

Uh, shithead, you had another 2 weeks to see what would happen with those 3. Noone's buying it. Go sign with another rangers type team, and languish in last place for a few years. This time, the Yankees will not rescue you from baseball purgatory

  • do the Yankees still get the draft picks that come with a player leaving via free agency?
  • AllieAllie Posts: 2,908
oh wait the thing about Girardi-did you guys hear him at the beginning of the game last night, he said "former manager" when Jeanie Zelasko was introducing him and he said "and that's all I want to say right now.."

    hmm
I hope he is the manager. They can't announce it till after the WS, right?

yes, if they offer him arbitration (which they will).

I'm going to say no because the Dodgers didn't get any compensation picks for Drew opting out last year to sign with the Red Sox.

i think buster olney reported today that they had decided on girardi. good choice, if it's true.

boras had it written into drew's contract that the dodgers couldn't offer him arbitration if he opted out.

i believe the deal with a-rod was that the rangers (and then the yankees) couldn't offer him arbitration after his contract expired in 2010. but i'm pretty sure that this clause didn't cover a-rod opting out in 2007.

I didn't know that Boras had that clause in Drew's contract.

If you're right, then the Yanks would definitely offer him arbitration.

Don't look now, but Boston just won it all again. Do you guys think they'll go after A-Rod?

and yes I know I watched the entire WS, thanks for the news flash :)

why don't you try, um, reading the thread for the answer to the question :)

That brings up an interesting survey. Who are your top 5 or 10 Yankees players in history?

I think Mattingly has got to be up there in the top 3.

    hmm
how far do we go back? Like to the times of Ruth, or modern times only?

    that's tough

If we're going back that far, to Yankees of all time, I think for a top 10 list, you'd' have to say,
    Ruth
    Joe Di
    Gehrig
    Maris
    Reggie
    Munson
    Graig Nettles
    Mattingly
    Derek
    and Mo

that's arguable though b/c some might think some of the pitchers were more valuable like Guidry and Catfish Hunter.. I don't know, it's tough to make a list. I think Ruth and Joe Di and Gehrig belong right up there :)
    that's my top 10 anyway :)

    Fun question, thanks

No Mattingly and A-Rod next year. That's gonna suck. I hope A-Rod doesn't go to Boston. I don't wanna see Manny, A-Rod, and Ortiz back to back. And Pettitte, Posada and Rivera might no come back. Rivera possibly. But I know Posada was upset they didn't want to renew his contract. He could possibly go to Texas. I hope George steps in.

I find it odd that A-Rod would let it get out that he's opting out on the day of the World Series. Sort of a low class act to me. Wht do ya'll think?

well he is kind of low class to begin with imo
but his agent actually made the announcement, didn't he?

the announcement came out as the game was ending, he probably figured the WS was about to be over so why not come out with it.

It seems every other generation or so the Yankees get a prima donna.

    Mantle, Reggie Jackson, A-Rod....
