  • I've been reading a few Indians and Joe Borowski stories (mostly Verducci) and read that one of Borowski's many stops in his career was in the Bronx. I do not remember him being a Yankee at all. Looks like he pitched in 1 game in 1997 and 8 in 1998, throwing to a 6.52 ERA

From Tom Verducci's " Five Cuts" on SI.com.

OK, you've probably heard too much already about those infamous sacrifice flies of Cleveland, the mighty midges that, unlike almost all AL hitters, knocked Yankees phenom Joba Chamberlain off his game. But this is too good not to pass on: When the bugs started swarming Chamberlain, a local insect expert in Cleveland telephoned the Indians with an urgent message -- those bugs are called midges, and whatever you do, do NOT use insect repellent; midges are attracted to the stuff. The Yankees practically bathed in bug spray; the more Chamberlain put on, the more the bugs swarmed him. So there you go. The Yankees can spend $190 million on payroll and still leave a blatant weakness: no, not their middle relief -- their lack of an entymology expert.

If you're a baseball fan, this guy is the best baseball writer in the country, and has been for a very long time. here's another cut on the midge situation, this one from last Thursday:

The Lake Erie midges provided the turning point of Cleveland's Division Series win over New York. Postseason games shouldn't be played in those conditions, but as long as this one was, the Indians showed greater resolve than the Yankees. In fact, the Indians, a source said, laughed when they watched Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez allow themselves to be blatantly distracted by the bugs. It gave Cleveland even more motivation to show they wouldn't be bothered by the infestation.

Oh for CRYING out loud. It was a con-spiracy! Blech!

Ok did you guys see this about DJ in the Post? What a pimp daddy

  • uh, ok. I guess that settles that. Anyway, as for the Jeter/Page 6 thing, check out what also appeared on Page 6 today:

As for us being "emasculated," Grigoriadis ignores that fact that half the Page Six staff is female. The male half might take her someplace private and disprove her theory, but we don't like a woman with a mustache.

    http://www.nypost.com/seven/10162007/gossip/pagesix/emasculated__well_see_.htm

So the same people who supposedly heard from a "tipster" that an "onlooker" heard from a "source" that Jeter was with 2 girls also says they would gangrape some woman if they found her more attractive.

oh and here's an update about the Torre situation, they won't have a decision until tomorrow or Friday! I mean, what's to discuss for so long, either he stays or he goes? I thought Steinbrenner made his mind up? If I were him I'd just call it a day

Plus if A-Rod opts out the Yanks won't negotiate w/him!

  • this was pretty funny on the journal news blog, sounds like stuff i'd come up with...

This just in from Tampa … they’re still meeting. Supreme Court justices have been confirmed quicker than this.

My theory is they’re setting up all the promotional days for next season …

April 1: Carl Pavano Day (all fans get $8 million then go home).

May 3: Derek Jeter Free Parking Day.

June 22: Kei Igawa Half-Price Tickets Day (Scranton only).

June 4: A-Rod Giant Piggybank giveaway.

June 22: All fans named “Melky” get in free.

Aug. 1: LoHud Yankees blog readers free beer night.

Aug. 22: John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman Bobbleheads to the first 10,000 fans in blue blazers or with Massachusetts accents.

Sept. 9: Roger Clemens Tough All Day Day (held in conjunction with his first start of the season).

Sept. 15: Diane Lane, Lucy Liu and Beyonce get to sit in the press box for free.

Sept. 30: Fan Appreciation Day. All fans get free team cap and Kyle Farnsworth is released before the playoffs start.

    Joe Torre refuses Yankee offer.

Oh well, thanks for the last 12 Joe, and those championships you brought to us.

    please mariano, stay here .

  • sounds like it was a much more than fair offer. 1 year guaranteed, $5 million base salary, $1 million bonus for making the playoffs, another $1 million for making the ALCS, and another $1 million bonus for making the WS. By making the WS, Torre is guaranteed another year for $8 million. Very, very fair. Just the base salary is $1.5 million more than any other manager.
  • The Yanks have are at least on the right track thinking JOE.....its just need to be the other Joe. GIRARDI.

I don't blame Torre at all. Good for you.

Oh and if Mattingly is appointed manager I will jump out my 22nd floor window

  • It was fair. To me this is Joe basically telling the Yankees to fuck off after having to read the threats of his boss during a playoff series that he was trying to win.

Well Torre's base last year was 7.5 million with a million dollar bonus for a World Series victory. I'm thinking Torre wasn't too happy about the incentives in this offer and the 33% cut in base salary considering what he's done for the franchise the last decade plus and the fact that the Yanks are full of money.

can't say i fault him for that, especially that he managed the team that is responsible for the most profitable era in the history of the yankees.

It should also be noted that when the Yankees hired him, he was flat broke. He is now a very, very rich man.

That may be the case - I don't know.

But to give the man who took your team to the playoffs 12 years straight a pay cut when you're going to have greater revenues in the next three years (with the closing of Yankee Stadium and opening of New Yankee Stadium) is insulting.

For example, Mike Holmgren, the Seattle Seahawks coach, will earn $8 million this season, Joe Gibbs, Washington Redskins coach gets $5.7 million, and Brian Billick of the Baltimore Ravens will get $5 million.

    * The first part was from an article on forbes.

Phil Jackson makes $6 million. Larry Brown had a huge contract with the Knicks.

For example, Mike Holmgren, the Seattle Seahawks coach, will earn $8 million this season, Joe Gibbs, Washington Redskins coach gets $5.7 million, and Brian Billick of the Baltimore Ravens will get $5 million.

Phil Jackson makes $6 million. Larry Brown had a huge contract with the Knicks.

Wow $8 mil for Holmgrem? That is amazing. I know he's a good coach, but wow. and I forgot about the larry Brown fiasco

I can't find Brown's salary from a few years ago, but the Celtics are paying Doc Rivers $5 million, Utah is paying Jerry Sloan $5.5 million and the Kings were paying Rick Adelman $7 million before they fired him.
