but dont u think she would tell me something other than what she likes in fear that i would get the ring for my gf ?

That's better than what I was going to say. I was going to ask why he wouldn't just ask his girlfriend what she'd like but I guess that's not very romantic.

this is something I don't get- if you're gonna marry someone, shouldn't you have an idea what their tastes are?

If a guy doesn't know that I hate diamonds and hate gold and really don't like the idea of engagement rings, I don't think I'd want him proposing.

Some girls say that, even if that's not what they mean. I mean if someone is going to ask to marry you, I'd think they'd buy you a ring even if you didn't want one. It's tradition

I think she's going to know something is up if you start talking engagement rings with her. (I'm just assuming that you're not the kind of guy who typically talks about women's jewelry. )

it's actually not a tradition. it was a marketing campaign started by DeBeers in the 1940s. And diamonds are not a traditional wedding stone, saphires are.

I dunno, I wouldn't want to walk around with that. it's a symbol that the woman is "taken" but men don't have to wear something when they're engaged. I don't like that. Plus it's kinda tacky. Plus diamonds are kinda sketchy, who knows whose hands were cut off or what little kid was forced into slavery to get them? And they're way over-priced. diamonds aren't rare, the supply is just held back.

claddaghs are for weddings though are they not? Actually, if I got married, I'd really like to go to gallway to pick out nice claddagh wedding rings.

I'm still not gonna say no if somebody gave me one (well depending on the question :eek: ) and yeh, I don't agree with a lot of the traditions... but the current 'tradition' has nothing to do with ownership.

He can always go to the diamond district, pick the diamond and then get it set.
For me, I would go for quality of the diamond of quantity of the carats.
Cut, color and clarity are the most important, imo.
