all that said, i am not a vegetarian, i am pro-choice, i do on occasion squash bugs, etc. so i am not fanatical about keeping things 'alive' simply to be 'alive' per se. however, i do believe as stated, there IS nothing inherently special about human life...meaning: it is no more special than any other life. WE, as a species, put a higher value on it...b/c we ARE human, and thus think we're pretty damn special. in the scheme of things, most species protect their own, so it is purely logical. we are much more highly evolved thinkers, and thus can make up many more *reasons* for what makes us so special, and important...or whatever other arbitrary rationale you want to put behind it. some may even argue that humans invented *god(s)* to justify their own self-importance over other creatures. maybe, maybe not...i don't even want to get involved in such an arguement...

however, yea.....since we ARE such highly evolved thinkers, which is brilliant and amazing...and can add so much further *value* in our own minds to our individual lives, perhaps more enjoyment, whatever......but yea, why would we truly believe, objectively, that our lives are more valuable? why should one think a cluster of cells perhaps a few days old.....have such inherent value simply b/c they possess the possibility of forming a human life? why?

there are instances time and again where we as a species show utter disrespect for so much life...even of those of our own species, existing right now out in the world.....so why? i can think of countless examples and i do just wonder, for such evolved thinkers, why do we think we're just so damn *important*...? seriously. the world would keep spinning without each and every one of us. just a thought.


also, don't mean to derail this thread...but it does seem to have gone off on a few meandering tangents, and this statement just SO struck me as right on....that i simply had to address it.


i LOVE being alive and all it encompasses, but yea i do realize....my life is uber important to ME...perhaps to those who care about me.....perhaps to some degree who's life may intersect and/or affect mine and vice versa....and even if i were uber *important* to our species, even still, in the scheme of *LIFE* as in.....with a capital L....it really isn't *important*...and i don't think of that as negative, or fatalistic...but merely...i am a part of life...and life is a part of me...and so the cycle goes, etc, etc............so yea..........

Awesome post d2d....cannot say how much I agree with what you have just posted.....pretty much sums up anything I could conjure up about the subject....

I'm a deist, yet I'm also pro-choice. It has nothing to do with religion, simply what one person considers right and wrong and what another does.

I only know what I know and I don't know what I don't know

I have a few topics that I've studied in-depth, abortion happens to be one of them. I haven't concerned myself too much with stuff like Roe vs Wade. I'm more interested in the prenatal development and the nature of life and morality. Human behaviour is my main area of interest.

sometimes those late-night ramblings actually are semi-coherent.
as i said, that statment by ahnimus, not that it's the first time i've seen or pondered that thought...but yea, seeing in this thread, one of those 'lightbulb' moments and that little hamster whell in my head went into overdrive until i purged those thoughts from my head right here.

personally, i do think it all quite suitable thoughts in this thread...but even in general. i think it would serve us, and particularly the planet and all the OTHER species who inhabit it too, far better if we used our intellect a bit more objectively, and yea...lightened up on the self-importance, rulers-of-the-planet attitude. just my 2 cents.
