When does someone right to have easy access to a firearm trump someone's right to go into a building without being worried that they're going to get fucking shot?
Well, our economy is set to crash this year. Then you will see this North American Union come about. Then we will see global government.
And how does that make people without guns slaves, people with guns citizens? Today. Not in a hypothetical future.
Also, the whole with guns = citizens, without guns = slaves is flawed and ridiculous.
If you live in a state where people are slaves, everyone will be a slave. Guns or not. Your government will not say, well he has a gun, let's leave him alone and give him his freedoms. And when you intend to use your guns to fight your government you are no longer a citizen but a freedom fighter, or according to the state you live in; a terrorist, which makes you a target, not a citizen.
But it makes much more sense to live in the present tense.
No, but he said "so what".. end of story. Something bad happens, how to you respond to sombody saying "so what" to people who are mourning..
The rest of my post explains it all. The rest of the world (and 99% of the US) treat these shooting as commonplace now so unless it affected you directly, you probably didn't care that much. A lot of conversations today will go: "You see that shooting in Illinois?" "Ya. I can't believe that these shooting keep happening. Where do you want to go for a beer after work?"
1/12/1879, 4/8/1156, 2/6/1977, who gives a shit, ...
Fear is a bad thing, if the Teachers were armed do you think this would have happened the way it did?
WOW. That statement right there is why these shootings don't bring about much sympathy anymore. It's the belief that this attitude is in the majority since they are the most vocal. I can't believe that some people are so willing to put their name beside such a stupid statement in the information age.
Every single one of these guys have killed themselves when they are "done". If they "arm the teachers" (LMFAO), anyone looking for a good old-fashioned gunfight to go down in a blaze of glory can take their pick of any gunslinging, tweed jacket wearing psychology prof (or profs) to duel. I know that most of the teachers I had in high school and the profs I had in university would end up shooting themselves by accident a hundred times before they had a chance to return fire to one of these crazies.
1/12/1879, 4/8/1156, 2/6/1977, who gives a shit, ...
the school can take whatever security measures they vote on or choose to enact... no laws should be changed because of things like this and no laws will be changed.
Unfortunately these are the ramifications of having liberty in a society.
People are free to make horrible decisions. They are going to make them no matter what laws are in place.
Honestly, this to me is a huge call to teach coping techniques in school more than anything else. Include it in freaking health class.
Parents aren't parents anymore in a lot of cases. We need to teach young people how to handle something negative happening...without somekind of mind numbing drug.

Hello,
I am a NIU Alumni and a Pearl Jam Fan/clubmember. I noticed that this thread here and I admit I haven't read through the entire thread. But the people here that are arguing about gun control for either side in this thread are complete jerks. This tragedy is not about gun control and there quite a few threads to discuss this if you would like. Please quit using this thread to fit your agenda. Instead give sympathy and or advice to those students who may need it. Also Please post any forthcomming news.
Thanks
John

I agree. Guns are just the tool. They make it easy to do, but the real problem is the people who would perform these acts if they had the opportunity. Even if guns were illegal, someone who is determined to kill as many people as possible while ending their own life will find a way to get a gun or build a bomb.

Completely agree with this sentiment. This is a horrible tragedy and this thread should focus on that aspect.
There is a thread open and on fire where you can read my thoughts on Gun Control but here I want to send my prayers to the victims of this tragedy.

the person who did this is a coward.. and if he didnt shoot himself like a coward...he should have his throat slit on national television... these are the people who glorify this kind of act..than these are the people who should put it all over there tv to get the next loser to see it... if you think this is harsh... watch a network televisions regular lineup...
the kid was on medication from what i read ... i wonder what role those drugs he took had in this ...
Apparently he quit the medication a couple of weeks ago. Who knows, maybe the past use of the medication help lead to this, or it was preventing things like this and once he stopped taking them, he was out of control.
Such a terrible tragedy... I just wish the news wouldn't make such a big deal about it.

There are many who'd say that It's this kind of thinking that's responsible for the fact that the U.S has experienced four high school shootings in the past week.
Have you never wondered why this shit doesn't occur anywhere else on the planet with such frequency? When was the last time a high school, or college kid walked into his school in England and shot the place up? Stabbing is a fashionable thing in England these days, but there's only ever one victim, not 5, and especially not 30.
I wonder if you'd feel the same way if a member of your family was a victim of gun crime.
yes i would because i understand that is not the answer to the problem that happened... just as a traffic light put up after an accident doesnt stop people not paying attention from running it...and in a lot of cases i bet you could find they are actually worse off than before.
THE FRONT LINE IS EVERYWHERE.. ALWAYS HAS BEEN
seems people are forgetting this... all these traffic lights and laws and safety requirements and tools to make you feel secure are a lie.
theres one thing people have forever been trying or seeking to reach a goal of illusion in this earth.. you cannot control the mind of a lunatic.
this is a minor event and thats it...its unfortunate...but the gunmen is dead so... ITS A LOSS...
terrible thing to happen though. but parading around pretending like you are gonna make this place better through laws and safety measures is an act of lunacy in itself..

No one's saying that banning guns will suddenly transform America, or anywhere else, into a crime free utopia. What it would achieve is a reduction in these kinds of mass killings, which are almost becoming a weekly event.

This tragedy is about gun control. And this thread is open for anyone to say whatever they like on the subject of school shootings, and on gun crime in general.
And, this message pit already has two moderators...we don't need a third. Thanks anyway.

than why the hell would Bush discontinue the Assault Weapons ban? i can go out today and have an assault rifle by monday...
now that the ban is lifted...there is a new market for these guns which means they are being produced once again at alarming rates..
i dont think the crimes in this civilization are ever going to be going in the opposite direction.. guns are getting bigger and easier to gain access to... its evolution... these crimes are the result of the society we live in.

I don't understand what you're saying. I think you need to read my post again.
america has always found solace in the bullet ... it goes beyond gun control ... it's about what plagues the society at its core ... it's about a place that lacks any realness that after a while - one's only option is to revolt in the worst possible way ...
Judging by this info from the CBC article on the shooting. There are only two answers: One, the people are fucked up and can get ahold of a gun no problem. Or, the gun is easy to get for fucked up people.
This is most impressive. Here is the quote:
It's the fourth shooting at an American school in a week. The others were:
Feb. 12: A 14-year-old boy shot a 15-year-old boy in a classroom at E.O. Green Junior High School in Oxnard, Calif. The victim was declared brain dead at hospital.
Feb. 11: A 17-year-old is accused of shooting and critically injuring a student during gym class at Mitchell High School in Memphis, Tenn.
Feb. 8: A nursing student opened fire at the Louisiana Technical College in Baton Rouge, killing two students before killing herself.
