And nice work to you, Jeanie. There are many people on this board that come off as completely oblivious to the degrading nature of using the terms for women's genetalia as an insult--using them in a derogatory way. These people seem unaware as to what that derogatory view of women's gentitals says about themselves. More power to awareness! :)

i wasnt being derogatory... i was being sardonic :o

    :D Wow.
No. no. It was just a tastless joke aimed at my Catholic school upbringing. While it was always "the less mentioned about ... you know ... the better" it never really went that far.

If I had to sum it up in one sentence, though, yeah it kinda fit.

I think I understood the context that you were using. And that the basis of your humour rested upon the fact that other terms for women's genitals are regularly used with a degrading connotation in some circles. So your comment could come off as a profound social commentary. ( or something ;) :) )

I wasn't as much calling you out in this case specifically as I was calling out all the many people (maybe you included) on this board who regularly use terminology that pertain to women's genitals, and who use these terms as flagrant insults. It certainly makes a statement about the user when they do so, whether that statement is intended or not.

I saw the Today show interview with the girls. The point was brought up that another student at this open mike night said the "F" word and he/she did not get into trouble. The principal suspended the 3 girls for saying "vagina" but did nothing about the "F" word. The Superintendent of schools was reviewing the principal's decision about the suspension so my guess is the girls will be let off the hook. I bet open mike night gets cancelled though.

As they should be. But I think it's sad that people are so threatened by the emancipation of women and the language they use to facilitate that.

And people do seem to be threatened by the Vagina Monologes and the movement that has sprung up around it.

It would be a shame if the open mic night gets cancelled but I think you may be correct. It would be so much easier for this principal to cancel the night than to wade through all the regulating that seems to be necessary.

I am sure you love women, and your wife and daughters. I am also fairly certain that you would not knowingly be derogatory regarding women's genitals. :) I've had the impression you pretty much love women.

I referred to using terms for women's genitals in an insulting way towards someone. In other words associating womens genitals with something despicable or repelling. I have no intention of judging whether you've done so or not.

What I'm saying is sometimes people don't realize what kind of message they are sending.

how come there's no link to this article? was it a public or private school? what is their open mic night like? im hesitant to say this is some grand social oppression of women. this is probably just a school district afraid someone's going to sue them for subjecting their kids to explicit sexual content at a school function. if some kid drops an f-bomb in a song or something it's not quite the same as the vagina monologues.

a school around here caused a huge controversy becos they had band serveral of their students were in lined up to play at a school assembly, then asked them not to when they realized it was a christian band with a seriously religious agenda. i bet if that story had been posted you'd all be praising the school district's censorship. the bottom line is, they don't want to get into trouble and the vagina monologues is pretty racy for an audience that might have members as young as 14 in it. the students were asked not to do it, and they did. so they were suspended. big deal.

what the fuck is a school hosting an open mic night for anyway?

well, there are more facts in the article than in the original post ;)

in any case, it's a bit confusing. they claim they didnt know the girls would be reading the play, then say they ok'ed them to read from the play as long as they didnt use that word. kind of a ridiculous stance.

    Give me a break please!
On the Today Show the girls were on. They were doing a proformance of the "Vagina Monologues" during an open mike night I think. Anyway the girls were asked not to use the word Vagina. They decided to do it anyway and got introuble.
I don't know, I really do not think it is a big deal unless you make it one.
    What do you all think??????????

yeah, what IS wrong with saying word vagina?.....

being descriptive about everything else that vagina encounters can be a trouble......and on this thread also ;)

Like I said, anyone can talk to me about it. ;)

I don't know, Ahnimus........there's something about a guy inviting me to talk about my vagina and then winking........it's a little............creepy. *cringes*

    ;)

But hey! Maybe if you offer the invite enough times, the ladies will jump in, regaling you with tales about their vaginas!
