i wasn't on the boards here in 2004....did you people waste this much time on the swiftboat bullshit too? i thought most of you here in the amt wouldn't let yourselves be distracted by nonissues.....
That doesn't address, to me, how he could continue going to a church with a pastor who held these extremely divisive views, views which Obama claims to be strongly against. All he said was basically the guy is like family and he has said and done other things he agrees with. But preaching hate is a big concern and even if I had been as close to a person as he was to Wright...I'm not going to follow and support a man with those kinds of delusions and prejudices. I would be outraged if any group of people I happened to be in was led by someone spouting such divisive and hateful remarks. I couldn't just go along and ignore it. If I was in a group whose leader started making similiar remarks about blacks, jews...whoever, I would get up and leave and wouldn't be coming back. Again, I'll ask you...if it had been Hillary's pastor and remarks about black people, would it not be a concern to you?
Also, I do not think addressing race issues is the most progressive stance one can make. These problems have been healing themselves for years. Just the fact that Obama has gotten the amount of support he has shows us that. People aren't concerned with each others race nearly as much nowadays. Address the oppression of the lower classes and the huge amount of money going into defense funding instead of social programs, address how thick special interests and corporate money has it's claws inside both parties and be honest about it even though you belong to one of those parties and I'll consider that speech to be the most progressive speech given by a Dem in quite some time. The race issue is a no-brainer, we all know the deal and are on board with furthering the progress in this issue. The other issues I just mentioned are widely ignored by the major parties despite the overwhelming concern from the public.
i'll address the second part first. Obama does address those things all the time. People, it seems even you, would rater talk about his pastor. Oh, well. i'll say again, so much for progressivism. As far as issues of race healing themselves for years, you are being naive to think that. We have made progress, but the problems have not "healed themselves" nor are they, in fact, healed. They are not even in full remission. This seemingly never ending push of af an issue clearly already addressed is proof of that. This line of attack on Obama is racist, plain and simple. There is absolutely nothing progressive about racism.
Now for the first part, i honestly, abook, don't understand how you, being seemingly fairly intelligent, can read the passage i cited and not see how he addressed the issue you claim he didn't address. Its RIGHT THERE. That being said, the remarks of reverend Wright whereas abravise indeed, are not hateful. I asked someone else and was not afforded a response. Perhaps you'll be a little more brave. What did he say that crossed the line from anger to hatred, because i just don't hear hatred. Even more specifically, what is it he said that YOU actually vehemently disagree with. Is it the condemnation of certain American foreign policies? Because you have been fairly outspoken about American foreign policy? Just what is it?

It's where he blames white people and pits them against black people that bothers me. It's divisive and untrue.
And I am a bit more optimistic about race relations in this country. I just don't see a huge issue of inequality. People overwhelming view each other as equals. Who doesn't? If they are racists then they keep it too themselves for the most part because they are well aware it is not a POPULAR opinion to hold. We have made great progress as a nation to heal these wounds.

Just my 2 cents. I think she's pissed that Kucinich isn't in the race. I am too but I also realize that we have 3 candidates to choose from. To me, Obama is the best choice.

I'm not pissed. It was expected. But I'm still going to pull for the best candidate and that person is now Nader. We only have the choices we allow ourselves to have...no one can force us to choose between those three...not the media, or the two major parties or the corporate money that's keeping them plastered all over our tvs. It's my voice and I'm going to use it loud and true.

He addressed why he continued to go to this man's church even when he was known for saying things such a the sermon in question?
I'm just saying it couldn't have been me. If I went to church and the pastor was spouting some extremely divisive type things like that then I would not want to continue going there. I wonder why Obama kept going even though he disagree so strongly with those viewpoints? It would be a deal breaker for me.
And how does asking that question end progressivism? Progressivism is all about asking the questions you're concerned about and wanting answers. This issue is a concern for many people, apparently.
I don't know...I think many are looking at this issue and perhaps see a bit of themselves...
what I mean is, how may have "friends" who say things they don't agree with...? I've got a close friend who says some pretty outlandish things, many I don't agree with, but I'm still is friend...
perhaps if we think about our own circle of friends or one's clergy or one's supervisor at work...I bet a few inappropriate things have been said by each...yet, we stay around...
I see where you stated you thought he did not address the issue in his speech...I have to ask, what did you want him to say...?
I see where you stated you thought he did not address the issue in his speech...I have to ask, what did you want him to say...?
i think what people here wanted Obama to say that is that "Jeremiah Wright is a hateful, racist, Black, asshole who has never done or said anything positive in his entire career and i wish he were dead. White racism has never existed, slavery, opression and jim crow are all myths. Besides every thing is all better now so there is no cause for anger".

"When all your friends and sedatives mean well but make it worse... better find yourself a place to level out."
I am just amazed that this is still the lead story in the news... The 5 year anniversary of Iraq (with all 3 candidates giving speeches, and even Darth Cheney giving an interview), the twists and turns of the economy and market this week, McCain's Al Queda gaff, a new bin laden tape, floods and storms everywhere, the Tibetan protests, etc... and all we get over and over and over is Obama and his pastor... Hell, on Fox "News" last night they were showing clips of controversial things that other people who have backed Obama said. Our media once again should be ashamed of themselves.
The only thing at this point that can get it off the news would be some celebrity arrest or rehab.

Really? While I believe there has been progress, to say there is no issue of inequality is what's untrue. I've seen it first hand, everywhere I've lived or traveled. Race riots in Cincinnati. Signs on gas station doors in MS that read "Nigger, don't let the sun set on you here." Coworkers in grocery stores where I've been employed stating, flatly and loudly, "blacks ain't so bad when there's only one or two. But groups of them? Man, they're like cockroaches."
Rev. Wright is almost 70. Check out some civil rights footage - that stuff happened during his formative years. That stuff sticks. Yes, we're better than we were. But, to paraphrase Ralph Nader, that's the liberal's dilema, isn't it? People always saying everything's O.K. because we're better than we were - while ignoring how good we can become.

i'm beginning to think its fairly typical of white "progressives" to scream about the need for progressivism until it comes to matters of race. When the coversation turns to race, progressives seem to want to downplay the effects of history and completely ignore the fact that these problems, despite some progress, are still very real. Progressivism should be so much more than gay marriage and weed legalization.
"When all your friends and sedatives mean well but make it worse... better find yourself a place to level out."
WOW... maybe the best speech i have ever heard in my life, no kidding. The guy nailed EVERY SINGLE ISSUE without missing a beat. This was the most open, and powerful, speech a politician may have ever given about race in america. After hearing him today i have no clue why everyone is not supporting this guy
Dont worry, all the news programs will be drooling over it tonight, so you didnt miss it
Was best speach I've heard in a long time. Course there are many folks that can't handle the truth and thus will end up costing him votes. Sad
I'm afraid my original doomsday scenario will come to fruition and McCain will win. I see the whole election coming down to race. There is a huge undertow of unspoken racism in America that only rears it's head when push comes to shove.
I am caught up in the mystique of Barack Obama. He is inspirational, a talented orator, intellectually superior to his competition. He is a rock idol, a movie star, a sports hero. It's easy to root for a black man when they are presented in this light to white America. But deep down somewhere ugly there is a fear of black America. Whether it got there from handed down prejudices, subconcious white guilt, or from unfortunate stereotypical experiences I'm not sure but it does exist. As soon as our hero stumbles we are quick to abandon and blame the black man for his own imperfections while ignoring our own. "I was going to vote for Obama but then his wife said she wasn't proud to be an American......I was going to vote for Obama but then his pastor said those racist things" are all excuses for what is really being thought, "I was going to vote for Obama BUT he is black."
We can all pretend that we have evolved enough to move past the scars of our racist past but I won't believe it until he is sworn in on the Quran.
It's where he blames white people and pits them against black people that bothers me. It's divisive and untrue.

I'm not sure where you live, but I live in Maine, there aren't a lot of black people here. I have a friend who plays on the college football team who is black, and we have a mutual white female friend. You should see the looks they get when we go out in public, and they aren't even dating. It is a bunch of bullshit, constantly looks of "Here is another black guy taking our white women" and people stare at them with looks of disgust, I mean stare. They aren't doing that when just her and I are out in public, neither one of them is horribly disfigured, there is only one reason they stare and get offended and it is pretty fucking obvious.
And yes if people are racist then they are not going to publicly express it, but the sure as shit won't vote for a black guy simply because he's black. To me thats worse than saying you are racist, at least that takes balls.
Thats like saying, if people don't show it that means it doesn't exist. Are you fucking kidding me?
I was taught a month ago to bide my time and take it slow, but then I learned just yesterday to rush and never waste a day. Now I'm convinced the whole day long that all I've learned is always wrong. Things are true that I forget, but no one taught that to me yet

Interesting indeed, I thought all this time Bill Clinton was a rich white dude.
He is. Apparently reverend Wright isn't the hatemonger he has been caricatured as to destroy Obama in typical American racist fashion. Either that or the clinton's hate white folks too.

Still don't think the recent line of Obama slandering is racist in nature?
I have no doubt that people were using the racist pastor of Obama's church to bolster their own brand of racism.
I also have no doubt that there are people who wonder about Obama's judgement in this matter and are being branded racists by PC Obama supporters to try to get them to stop questioning his lapse in judgement.

I live in SC and there are a lot of black people living here. And it's common place to see bi-racial couples out. There's no awkwardness or stares. In high school, our senior year, the quarterback, a really popular white guy, took a black girl to the prom. She was a really nice girl, funny and super smart, on the student council, a cheerleader...the match made sense. No one acted weird about it. There will always be people who may be racist, sexist or whatever that have these opinions no matter how society has moved past this mentality. We can't do anything but continue to live our lives the right way, by being accepting and understanding of our differences. Most people in this country do not harbor racist sentiments. Look at the outcry in the media when someone makes a boneheaded remark like Imus...people cry for him to lose his job, just for a dumb remark he already apologized for. So to act like our nation is still gripped by racism and unequal treatment seems silly to me especially considering the amount of progress we've made and wounds we have been healing for decades. I mean, whose top concerns for the upcoming election this year include race relations in this country? I don't see many threads about it here except for the occasional complaint of people being overly PC.

For those of you who agree that context is very important, not just a clip (Which I hope is all of us) here is an excellent article about the now famous Rev. Wright sermon about 9/11.
