Is all religion basically the same?

Meaning Jesus won't send to hell anybody that doesn't acknowledge him. I remember a priest told me this when I took the first (and last) communion (like 20 years ago

I remember when The Last Temptation of Christ(Scorsese's movie) came out it was a big fuss here in Latin America and several countries banned the film and the Church said it would ex-comulgate catholics that went to see it. I did not know this (not that I would care), but after reading this on the newspaper I asked a priest, that used to play tennis at my club, just for curiosity, and he told me that since I watched the movie without knowing that it could lead such penalty I was OK...

I loved the movie! I thought it was a great film with an excellent music score. I'll take your word for the accuracy of the facts portrayed in it, 'cause the last time I had anything to do with religion I was 13 years old (I'm 34 now).
For me the core of almost all religions is basically the same: be kind with your fellow human beings. People that consider themselves as religious and do not follow that "mantra" are doing a poor service to their credos, if you ask me.0 -

taught by a priest. a man. did he also tell you that it was a scare tactic to recruit more catholics? what Jesus taught and what the church teaches are 2 different things. Jesus fought against organized religions.0 -

Nope he did not, anyway I don't recall much of the priest's teachings because, as I said before, it was a long long time ago. I never went to a Catholic school, I only took Catholicism lessons during the year prior to my First Communion (it was mandatory). I just tried to answer Fanch75 question about Catholicism and going to hell.
I'm aware that the Catholic Church commited horrendous crimes in the name of Jesus, and has failed to adapt to current times, which is why it's having such a had time these days to gather (let alone keep) its adepts
Jesus during his last years (which, besides his birth, are thew only ones told in the Bible) tried to fight against the leaders of his religion 'cause he felt they were driving religion apart from the people. I'm aware of this.0 -

no, and no, imo.
the more i learn about islam, the more i doubt that it is all that similar to christianity or judaism in that it does seem to promote and glorify violence against non-believers. and while God himself may punish non-believers in the judaic and christian holy books, your average joe- or in this case osama- is called upon to hand out punishment on his fellow man according to the koran. :("Ladies and gentlemen, the President of the United States, Barack Obama."

i never said Jesus wrote the bible. it was in response to the comment that the elite formed religions.hippiemom wrote:I think this must be the 619th time I've asked you, and never once received an answer .... where can the rest of us have a look at these 619 commandments?
FOR THE 620TH TIME; IN THE KORAN. the bible does mention the laws of God but you're better off reading the koran.hippiemom wrote:I thought you studied law at Loyola?

you posted the link. read it. they're spread out in the bible so they're easier to find in the koran. the problem is in the translation. for example; in hebrew; it says thou shalt not murder. it's translated as thou shalt not kill. we find that in modern law too. i am allowed to kill to protect myself although i'm not allowed to murder. just an example of how modern law mirrors the 619 laws of God.

Loyola requires 4 years of theology classes to graduate?

hippiemom wrote:It was in response to Ahnimus posting "They all ask you to suspend reason and submit your life to the elite who write the religion." Jesus didn't write anything that we know of.
Jesus asked only 3 things of us.
1) love thy neighbor as you love yourself.
2) honor my (his) father
3) take care of my (his) children.
everything else is smoke and mirrors.hippiemom wrote:I probably don't have all that long to be on this planet, and there's no way I'm going to waste any significant chunk of time reading the Koran (it really does make for horrible reading). i would if i could remember where. it is horrible reading but it's a great story whether you believe it or not. better than harry potter anyway. the history channel runs a documentary about the 619 commandments now and then. believe it or not; it's not really religious. i just tivo'd it so i can let you know when it's coming on. it's called the 10 commandments and it's an hour long. like i said; i didn't find it religious.hippiemom wrote:Sorry, my mistake. I interpreted your post as meaning you majored in theology, not just took the required courses.
i hated the course. especially being taught by jesuit priests. third year we had a professor that taught taoism; buddism; hindu; and other eastern religions. i found that interesting.0 -

Ok.
