Personally, no I dont think so. When I hear something I dont like. I stop listening. Did it with Richards, did it with Gibson, did it with O'reilly. Hey, if people want to sit there and listen to ignorant remarks coming from an ignorant person, go ahead and start up the circle jerk.
Yeah, but isn't that the whole problem, here?
White people for the most part shrug the racist comments from non-whites and identify it for the hate and ignorance it really is; and they stop listening. I've done it for years. I ignore racist stupidity and continue along with my day and my life.
But some black people and other non-whites are clinging, clutching and nurturing it all, so as to make a huge drama and issue over it. All the while claiming entitlement in their part of making these kind of comments.

Agreed, dude. This society we live in has no concept of moderation or balance when it comes to racial issues. We are expected to take all the lumps.
Then why the hell are you proposing doing the same thing? When you buy into evil to "prove a point", all you're doing is proving that you're evil.
you fight the battle on the battlegrounds you are attacked. black celebrities use the same words as imus did. imus was punished because he was white. if sharpton and jackson want to fight the battle here; so be it.

This "battle" analogy is so ridiculous, I'm not sure where to begin. It's like suggesting that anti-war groups should go to war with someone "to prove a point". It makes no sense.
If you're better than they are, keep being better. And when they attack your words and demand an apology, kindly tell them that you respect their right to say whatever demeaning thing about you they choose, but that you have nothing to apologize for. And see who ends up winning the culture war there.

Imus' appeasements are Imus' alone, as are Oprah's, as are yours. He said he was sorry, told the public he thought his career was over. What more is there to say? This "punishment" you talk about in defense of Imus is accepted by Imus. What's the problem?
What's your point? You know as well as I do that it wasn't the word "hos" that got Imus in so much trouble.
My point is he called them sluts who take money for sex and have hair that's difficult to manage. No, I don't think it's just the "nappy headed" part that counts.

Then why wasn't the other guy who called them "hos" also taken to task? Imus didn't even start the use of that word, it was some other guy. Imus was the one that made it racial by referring to the nappy hair. "Hos" isn't a racial slur. What, you can't have a white ho?
When people beat around the bush, eventually what they're looking for comes running out.
LOL, that appears to be a bush of your own making. Speaking for myself, I can't remember that last time I used the word. Even when I was a kid, I didn't use that word.
But then again, maybe I have a subconscience motive, since my bloodline and family tree had two black africans enter the bloodline, a long, long time ago.

My take on the problem is simply that one person can make public racial remarks and have his career ruined, while another can do basically the same thing and it gets laughed off. Even a hardcore social rights activist has to see the inconsistency here as a problem.
I also think Oprah is a ho. But that's that my bias shining through. I don't like most talk show hosts.

Please. When people say things like "well, black people can say stuff to each other that we can't. It's not fair." it doen't take a linguistic genius to figure out what "stuff" they're talking about.

my black neighbour told me this joke.
a white dude; a frenchman; and a black man were drinking in a bar. the bartender asked what they did to drive their wives crazy after sex. the white man said he tickled her hairs and she giggled uncontrolably. the frenchman said he drank champagne from her belly and it drove her wild. the black man said i wipes my dick in the drapes; it drives her f'n nuts.
why can he tell that joke in public with acceptance yet i can't?

when did that joke get race. I heard that about 6 years ago and they were just three dudes. weird.

You sir, are no genius.
You try to extract hidden agendas where there are none. In fact this whole thread and discussion has absolutely nothing to do with that word and the alleged desire to be able to use it. Conversely, you continue to ignore the real subject matter and try to spin and convince other's that your spin job is the correct one.
That is your interpretation and you stand alone in it.

I believe they're called whos.
Anyway, so you're saying that what Imus said was racial? It's context. Let's take the following words, in context.
"Dude, you are such a butt head."
"Man, that guy was a total fucker."
"Have you been to the new Hustler store? They've got all kinds of perverted shit."
Now, take those words, apply them in a different context, and call somebody a Butt Fucking Pervert. Wouldn't that come across as at least mildly homophobic? But why? After all, many women have anal sex, and they can certainly be "perverted." Could the difference be the person that said it, and the tone?

I am still not entirely sure what we are debating here ... The topic is the double standard in racial remarks. I've never tried to argue that what Imus said wasn't racial. What Oprah said was racial too.

I'm drawing from experience here. More often than not, when someone is pissed off that they "can't" use words that blacks "can," it's not because of some altuistic belief in free speech and open dialog.
But you can think of me what you will. I won't attempt to have you fired for it.

I guess I'm not really debating. What Oprah said was racial, sure. But is it anywhere near what Imus said? No, not really.

Both remarks were presumably meant to be harmless jokes. One was more crass than the other, granted, but these two poor attempts at humour should be treated the same way, unless you are starting from the premise that racial remarks about black people are a priori worse than other types of racial remarks, which is not a premise I accept. My honest view is that both remarks should have been disregarded as what they were: Dumb jokes. But that's not the way it works, because of this culture of victimhood that people like Al Sharpton promote.

See, I don't see it that way. I believe there's such a thing as going "too far." What Oprah said was that white people don't have rhythm. What Imus said is that black women pass their asses around the street for money.

Oh, yes ... She should also have to apologize at least 800 times, and be fired.
Yeah, but isn't that the whole problem, here?

Its also a known fact that black people have nappy hair ... Yet saying one is deemed so much worse than the other.

It's called liberalism. I know how you feel.

In the context of this debate, define the liberalism that you are talking about.
