Why do Canadians bands suck so much?

  • Easy... lots of Canadians bands sucks, lots of canadians bands rock. Of course if the USA mainstream radio and american music fans want to hear more of Nickelback and Celine Dion than Neil Young and Feist, i just don't know who's to blame...

Some canadians bands that were list in this thread are amazing, and they outnumbered the number of bands that sucks.

Btw i'm not a fan of the Hip at all, but they're a thousand... a billion time better than My Chemical Romance, Good Charlotte, Blink90210, Korn, Creed, Limp Bizkit, Hilary Duff, Britney Spears... and the list goes on...

  • I love Rush. Amazing band.
Triumph is another band from Canada that I thought was great.

I haven't read all the replies but everyone that hates Geddy's voice, listen to La Villa Strangiato and then try to tell me that Rush sucks!

Just thought of some more kick-ass Canadian bands from back in the day. I first became obsessed with Canadian rock during high school, and I'm pretty sure I saw each of these bands live at least once over the course of the 90s:

    Weeping Tile
    54-40
    Skydiggers
    Headstones
    The Odds
    Change of Heart
    13 Engines
    Thrush Hermit
    Big Sugar
    The Grapes of Wrath
    Crash Vegas
    Rusty
    NoMeansNo
    Spirit of the West
    The Smalls
    Treble Charger
    The Inbreds
    By Divine Right
    Junkhouse
    Doughboys
    Jr. Gone Wild

Oh, and to the guy who thinks Australian music sucks, I've got two words for ya: Midnight Oil.
"I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. With my voice I can sound like a girl, the boogieman, a Theremin, a cherry bomb, a clown, a doctor, a murderer. I can be tribal. Ironic. Or disturbed. My voice is really my instrument."

The fact that you lumped Rush in with the rest of the pathetic bands you've mentioned dosen't say much for your taste in music. ;)

I could never get in to Rush. I just can't get past the lead singer's voice. Sound like a transvestite trying to sing right after they sucked down some helium.

  • I love Our Lady Peace - I know they are commercial and whatever, but I think Raine Maida is an incredibly genuine lyricist. Whilst their last album might not have been musically their best, lyrically it had some amazing songs.

FINALLY someone brings up The Tea Party! Awesome band.

As for Australian bands..... The Saints, anyone?

AC/DC, Midnight Oil, Powderfinger, Nick Cave is Australian....

Depending on what they do next, Wolfmother is up there too.

Obviously it has but there has not been enough good Canadian music to make up for the steaming turd that is popular here. I dont even think the indie bands that have been listed by just about every user on this thread are even good enough to make up for those bands I listed. Some of them have a few decent songs but nothing to cheer about.

aren't you obsessed with the redwalls? if so, you'd love sam roberts.

Two more great Aussie bands: Hunters & Collectors and Hoodoo Gurus. As for the Tea Party, I wasn't really a fan of their albums, but they were incredible live. Apparently they had a bigger following in Australia than they did in Canada. They certainly spent a lot of time touring down there.

Yep. I saw them twice in as many years. Really popular down here in the late 90's.

The correct spelling is Canadian. Unless of course you're talking about the NHL's Montreal Canadiens, which is spelled with an "e".

Here is just a small list of the Canadian imported bullshit that has poisoned American radio

    Nickelback
    Finger Eleven
    Sum 41
    Three Days Grace
    Barenaked Ladies
    Default
    Rush
    Simple Plan

You really spend an inordinate amount of time on here telling us about all the music you hate.

I loved their last album! Unfortunately, Jeff M's solo album didn't do anything for me.. The only time I got to see them live was at the last White Ribbon Benefit they hosted. I still have the Jeff Martin/Gordie Johnson (Big Sugar) version of 'Keep on Moving' from that gig on my ipod.

I just realised that I own albums of pretty much every band that was mentioned in this thread minus the first post. :D I even have Alex Lifeson's Victor album. Maybe I should send Canadian Immigration photos of my CD and DVD shelfs and ask them to let me in even though I don't have the required $10.000,-.... ;)

How in the hell is there a thread about Canadian music, I read all 6 pages ... and there is no mention of ...

    LOVERBOY!

(or Bryan Adams for that matter)

ok, seriously .... there a tons of amazing Canadian artists ... and I'm sure if you actually took the time to hear a lot of the bands that are being mentioned, you'd probably like some of them.

I'll assume you know most of the older ones mentioned (like Rush, who are pretty damn fantastic) ... but as for new music ... you really should listen to the ones folks have been mentioning ... if you like Pearl Jam and Oasis ... I'm sure SOMETHING in here would intrest you.

I've seen The Arcade Fire quite a few times .... as great as their albums are, their live performances are off the charts .... to see how versitile many of the folks in that band are, and the array of instruments they play ... it's amazing.

Just saw Metric again yesterday at the Download festival ... Emily Haines is crazy on stage ... so full of energy. Good stuff. (Although, you state you don't like female singers, so, pass on this)

Not sure if anyone has mentioned the Stills ... but their first realease a few years ago "Logic Will Break Your Heart" was a fantastic album.

... and Broken Social Scene's 2004 Coachella appearance still ranks up there as one of the best concerts I've seen recently. I have the set and listen to it often. A collection of band members from a lot of Canadian acts ... lots of good guitar work, both hard and light that as a PJ fan, you should be into. "You Forgot It In People" is probably one of my top 5 albums in the 2000s.

Not sure how you feel about the Strokes, but a band that just had their first release last year and remind me a lot of them, Tokyo Police Club, are quite good as well.

Not sure I saw Wolf Parade mentioned here .... another on the indie scene that have put out a tremendous album with "Apologies to the Queen Mary" ... and from what I heard from the show I saw them at a few weeks ago, the follow up will be just as fantastic.

Maybe you like some electronca? Check out Holy Fuck ... some good looping mixed with hard rock.

Finally, it has to be said .... I think Men Without Hats were from Canada ... now how can you hate on The Safety Dance???

Ooooh, nice! Looks like I'm going to see a lot of Big Sugar videos tomorrow ;) I've been looking for their french EP for years, I loved the french version of 'Turn the Lights On' (ouvre la lumière if I remember correctly), but no such luck...

I like I Mother Earth, but I don't think I could listen to an entire album anymore.

I have high hopes for the new Econoline Crush album. It's produced by the same lady who produced 'The Devil You Know'.

And BTW, the new Blue Rodeo album rocks - or maybe I'm just getting old :D

I can't take it no more,
    I'm gonna pack my
    bags and
    fly......baby,
    Or no way at all.

So why don't you turn me lose,
    Turn me lose,
    Turn me lose,
I gotta do it my way,
    Or no way at all.

Why don't you turn me lose,
    Turn me lose,
