While I don't think shit music is a product of Canada (its universal). I don't understand their love of The Hip. Sorry but I've really given them a fair chance & well to be blunt...they bite ass. I own their live album & I'll say they are a very talented live band. But its just not my thing & it baffles me how it can be for so many others.
The Hip are an acquired taste. If you grew up with their music like I did, chances are you love them. I've noticed it's mostly Downie's voice that seems to turn people off, which is understandable. If you're listening to them for the first time his vocals can get kind of grating if you're not used to it. Contrary to popular belief, the Hip do have a lot of American fans, and some of them are more obsessive than any Canadian. When I saw them in Boston a few years ago, I met a dude from Arizona who had spent the entire summer following the band across the U.S. Personally I love them. They've been my favorite band for the past 18 years, and for my money I think they're the best rock n' roll band on the planet (sorry Pearl Jam). But hey, maybe that's just me.
"I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. With my voice I can sound like a girl, the boogieman, a Theremin, a cherry bomb, a clown, a doctor, a murderer. I can be tribal. Ironic. Or disturbed. My voice is really my instrument."
Anybody remember The Watchmen? Awesome band. I must have seen them live at least 12 or 13 times between '93 and '99. It's a shame they broke up.
Funny how this thread has suddenly turned into a love-in for Canadian music, lol.

You seem to give the impression that no American bands suck they're plenty to go around. Make your list of those bands too.
BTW.....I love RUSH and if you dislike Geddy's voice, RUSH has produced many classic instrumentals.

And the U.S. has not produced any bands that suck?
Obviously it has but there has not been enough good Canadian music to make up for the steaming turd that is popular here. I dont even think the indie bands that have been listed by just about every user on this thread are even good enough to make up for those bands I listed. Some of them have a few decent songs but nothing to cheer about.
Alpine Valley 2000

Our Lady Peace was one of my favorite bands untill they released that giant pile of trash Gravity (Healthy in Paranoid times was even worse). But I thought their first 4 albums were very good and I enjoyed listening to them.

you Canadians are all the same with your flapping heads and beady little eyes!
lol!

The "lastexit" dude said something about Wintersleep not sucking. He's sooooo right. The new album is better than a hockeyskatesnowflakejointrushmapleleafpoutineplatter on a sesame seed bun.
He's a smart guy!
US labels want these particular bands, and your fellow country-folk buy it all up, so that's what you continue to get. Several Canadian bands simply emulate American styles and do what is necessary to make it big in that market. Nickelback is the primary example.
BNL is a much better band than people give them credit for. I used to crack at them, too, until I heard an older tune of theirs on the radio one day called, "Call and Answer," and I realized how wrong I was. Amazing song. I opened my mind a bit and separated myself from the "cool kids" way of thinking and found their work to be all-encompassing; humour, seriousness, & intelligence are all represented. Also, the guys in the band are hilarious, down-to-earth, and smart people. I wouldn't count myself a huge fan of theirs, but they deserve more credit than they get.
I just don't get Rush, I've tried and I know that they are great musicians but damn...
Geddy Lee cannot sing. he's worse than Stone Gossard.
stupid lyrics too.
Geddy Lee can sing incredible for his style and what he tries to accomplish. Whether or not you like his voice is a different issue altogether, but to say he can't sing is just ridiculous.
And stupid lyrics? Good lord you couldn't be more wrong...
Bright eyed kid: "Wow Typo Man, you're the best!"
Typo Man: "Thanks kidz, but remembir, stay in skool!"

Geddy Lee is acutally a great singer, just his voice can be kinda shrill, but he still has a fairly good range, but I have noticed they have been tuning down. I wonder how hight his voice us to get.
Stupid lyrics? more like highly intelligent lyrics.

Oh no doubt his range is not what it used to be, be he has adapted well to his new range. There was a span in the late 80's and early 90's where his voice was a little rough live, but now I think he sounds great and has figured it out. They tune down a few songs and it works just fine.

I'm still trying to figure out if you meant this as a joke or for real (the women vocalists part)

Best rock n' roll road movie ever!

he must play bass like a girl then too? and while your at it the drummer is terrible.
8/7/08, 6/9/09
and don't forget the foot controlled synth that he plays. When he's playin both on YYZ it's pretty insane.
Also, wasn't the bulk of The Band Canadian?
What you say has no credibility because you have Oasis in your name.
Oasis is pretty fuckin awful.

Also why Canada??For a country whos bands really do suck the festering bellend of rockmusicality..............AUSTRALIA!!!.
How shit are their bands, you could count them on the strings of one of Seasick Steves guitars!!
Choosing the shiny ones instead'
Reading 06 - Torino 06 - Wembley 07
AC/DC came from Australia, which instantly puts them above Canada
