If it's possible to not be into the Pumpkins', and yet BE into this album, then that is where i fit. Muzzle kills me everytime i hear it. In good ways.0

Fair enough but I read somewhere the way they count double albums is the format that was dominant at the time of release is how they indicate whether or not it's a double. Besides if you want to look at it like everything is a single album until someone records enough music to fil two ipods. But all that aside I agree with whomeever (too lazy to look) said that the second cd used to be a drag but listening to it now it's fantastic. I played this at work a few weeks ago and was pleasently surprised"I'm not suicidal, except when I drink. That's why we don't all drink at the same time, there'd be no-one alive to drive home..."

Well, I would have to say that the White Album was a better double album, but anyway:
There was this girl when I was in 8th grade who would sit and listen to Mellon Collie every day during lunch and read the lyrics...the whole bit.
Me, then the jock, always wondered what that was all about. Then, I went out and bought the album later and listened to it like nonstop in my room for like the next six months. Honestly, I still think Tonight, Tonight is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard.0 -

I agree with this statement and more...There was nothing new on this album. There was nothing that to me was so creative that I would deem this the best double album of all time. I am not a over the top fan of the Pumpkins but I am a huge fan of music so I do not discredit what the Pumpkins/Billy can and has done for music. This album left me feeling that there should had been more to offer, something to truly make this one more special then the rest. However I am excited to see what they can pull together this year with the new release.Let's Go Red Sox!0 -
the beginning of Muzzle is one of the coolest things to ever enter my ear canal. those drums are intense.Pick up my debut novel here on amazon: Jonny Bails Floatin (in paperback) (also available on Kindle for $2.99)0

Muzzle is definately the greatest Pumpkins song ever!!"Darth Vader would say 'Impressive'."

I recorded some live show on the radio from Chicago and they were playing new songs off Mellon Collie. The power blew sometime during the show and they had like a 30 min wait until they got it fixed. I was working on a science project while listening to this live event on the radio. Great double album.0

Lets keep this thread going!!! I'm hoping Billy gives Mellon Collie a lot of attention on the upcoming tour. This album illustrates the period when he was in his prime as a songwriter!"Darth Vader would say 'Impressive'."

easily one of the best albums ever... except for the title of it.0
-
i gotta say this though. i think Siamese Dream was their best album. i mean, that disc was flawless. i like the fact that Mellon Collie was ambitious, and the for the most part those ambitions hit their targets. there are no bad songs on it, and there are many great ones.... and now that i think about it, it may not have been flawless, but it was still a progression from Siamese Dream. so maybe those two album are tied in my mind.
(hmmm didn't I rant about people ranking PJ albums the other day?)0 -
I have to agree about Siamese Dream too, that album was flawless. But I think Mellon Collie was definately a more ambitious effort, and more of a group effort at that. Even Billy said that when Butch Vig was their producer, he focused on making sure the album sounded absolutely perfect technically, but Flood was about bringing out the emotion of the band, and making sure the album sounded musical. Both albums are amazing in their own right, and I'm happy they're back!!"Darth Vader would say 'Impressive'."

I love love love this album. Next to a pearl jam album, I believe it is one that I have listened to the most in my adult life. It is has just the exact right amount of anger, sadness and rejoicing in these feelings. I think it is beatiful that those emotions are celebrated so perfectly. Love it."F**K you, I have laundry to do" -ed0

Being that The Smashing Pumpkins are my second favorite band to Pearl Jam, I must say that MCIS is my favorite album. I mean, the list of brilliant songs is almost endless...from the opening note to the closing note, pure brilliance and Billy at his best...
However, noone mentioned any of the amazing B-sides that came from this record. It could have been a four disc album!!!

Pearl Jam and toast wrote:Yeah, MCIS, the first two records, and Machina are LOUDED with amazing b-sides. We got the early years in Pisces Iscariot, but casual fans don't know about the left overs that at least double the pumpkins' catalouge. Brilliant stuff.
And the brilliance doesn't end there...don't forget that 5-disc Mashed Potatoes Box Set.Is it so wrong to think that love can keep us safe?0 -
I heard a rumor that there was a third disc to Mellon Collie that was never released with B-sides. Not sure if it's true or not...anyone know or anyone have it?"Darth Vader would say 'Impressive'."
