Really hoping this album hits the net pretty soon... I'll buy it as soon as it comes out, I was thinking of ordering the vinyl since I don't really listen to CDs anymore... But I wanna hear this, and I can't wait a whole month.
The Man has a branch office in each of our brains, his corporate emblem is a white albatross, each local rep has a cover known as the Ego, and their mission in this world is Bad Shit.
Just bought tickets for Friday night in Athens (in addition to the already purchased Saturday night.
I never thought I would say this, I really don't think I can say that Pearl Jam is my favorite band anymore.

I feel the same way.
All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a thousand enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you, digger, listener, runner, prince with the swift warning. Be cunning and full of tricks and your people shall never be destroyed.
Shows were amazing this weekend. Patterson was so good on Friday that I went back for the Saturday show as well. That new song "The Opening Act" is just a killer. He played a couple songs off Murdering Oscar too, and "She's A Little Randy" from Randy and the Mob. And on Friday, he encored with "Adam Raised A Cain".
I talked to him a bit on Friday and he said he'd be back in Chicago around May. I'm not sure I can wait that long! A road trip may be in the works

Wow...glad to see the the tide has shifted.
I guess I relate to these guys more...and they are more accessible.
I'm not saying I don't dig Pearl Jam anymore, but I'm looking forward to DBT's new album and tour with much more anticipation than I do Pearl Jam's stuff.

Some of it might be that DBT doesn't preach down to the fans.......they can get the message across without being on a pedestal.

The best way I can describe it is that I am passionate about this stuff the way I was passionate about PJ's stuff when I was a little younger. Still love them and look forward to every release, but I really relate more to DBT at this stage of my life than I do PJ... More into the storytelling thing now... the songs are about people everyone knows and are so vividly created that they draw you in...
Songs like Unemployable and Army Reserve do that - but DBT puts out a whole album of it...

I don't agree here. I think Ed tries too hard to relate to the common man. He's past that point and his storytelling songs sound forced. I like them, but it's not the same as when I hear Patterson sing:
"Cause it was my Daddy’s and his Daddy’s before
and his Daddy’s before and his Daddy’s before
Five generations and an unlocked door and a loaded burglar alarm.

I am with you on this. PJ started with angst, they were young and as a kid, I know I could relate to it. They were just barely past being kids as well.
Then they got weird (Vitalogy and No Code) and people started backing off of them (or they chased them away, depending on how you look at it). But I ate those records up, easily my top two from PJ.
And now it seems like they are trying to do kind of a populist thing, like you said, relating to the common man, and it just doesn't really work. I think they should have continued along the path of artistic growth and kind of reaching out experimentally... sure there is a lot more room for failure, but there is also a lot more room for growth.
And there is a lot of other stuff that goes into it as well...
These days I have to drive for 15 hours or get on a plane to go see PJ. That's just crap. I live in the 4th largest state by population. You wanna be populist and for the people? Come play some damn shows.
PJ stopped doing bootlegs the last time out and who knows if they will do it again. After actually going to the shows this was THE primary thing that has kept me really into them for the past few years. And they never did the much lauded vault releases they have been hinting at forever.
And none of this is to say I don't still love their music, or I won't go to the shows, or anything. Cause I do. I have grown up with it and lived with it for far too long. But DBT is so immediate. I can relate more to the songs. They are always on the road. And they don't do things (intentional or not) that distance them from their fans.
And I know its not a perfect comparison, cause these bands are worlds apart in scope. But sometimes its like PJ doesn't even try anymore to bridge that gap between and we all know they did in the past.

I don't think the storytelling songs sound forced - if you take them as they are on their own, they are actually quite good...
It's when you put them in context with Ed's track record of preaching that they sound forced. Like he's saying "OK, I'll make it about the subtext on this one, but then I'm going to beat you over the head with it later..."

I don't know...I thought he shined on a song like Marker in the Sand (even WWS)...that seems to be more of his forte now.
I just didn't buy his character portrayals on the last album.

"Talking tough is easy when it's other people's evil and you're judging what they do and don't believe.
Seems to me you'd have to have a hole in your own to point a finger at somebody else's sheet.
Baby, every bone in my body's gone to jumping like they're gonna come through my skin.
If they could get along without the rest of me, it wouldn't matter if they did.
Skeletons ain't got nowhere to stick their money, nobody makes britches that size.
And besides you're a ghost to most before they notice that you ever had a hair or a hide. "
Cooley has got to be one of the best song writers of this generation.

Maybe it's the twenty-six mile drive from Zip City to Colbert Heights
Keeps my mind clean
Gets me through the night
Maybe you're just a destination, a place for me to go
A way to keep from having to deal with my seventeen-year-old mind all alone
Keep your drawers on, girl, it ain't worth the fight
By the time you drop them I'll be gone
And you'll be right where they fall the rest of your life
You said a mouthful......:D

Arguably my favorite... there's a great TDU version of this on Youtube...
Although after hearing the blurb, Three Dimes Down could be my new fave cooley song...
The way he writes and phrases certain things amaze me.
Cottonseed...that's how you tell a story!
Zip City is a favorite...although it's one I haven't been able to hear in concert yet.

Hell, I'm in love with "Uncle Frank." Out of this world story telling......capturing characters whose tragedy no other artist would consider worthy. It tells an honest tale of the dark side of modernization of the rural society. Great stuff...especially live.

The DBT appear to be avoiding San Diego recently. Looks like I may have to drive up to Disneyland to see them on a monday night.
I know, I know, no sympathy from the southern contingent on the board.
Just like Blessing and a Curse, I'm steering clear of any previews/leaks of this disc. I was listening to Southern Rock Opera today and was reminded of just how fierce a duo that Hood & Cooley are.
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

Nothing that We can easily make in the first round either. I will be out of the country for the Athens, GA dates. :(

Hopefully, they'll announce more dates along the way but, as it stands, I'm going to try and hit the St. Louis show.
