This. Obviously I don’t want the band to call it quits, but it’s hard to even think about who could really replace him.

I can't say I'm 100% surprised. Matt is an Iron Man level drummer, but also a multi-talented musician.

He could call it a day, and walk off the field still at the top of his game. A legend, twice-over.

    But he's not done yet.

He's been the most prolific out of the five as far as side projects, so I don't think he's quite ready to hang up the sticks/guitar/microphone.

And if the rumors are true (especially for the weekend of July 18-20th in Seattle), there's at least one more SG/Nudedragons event in the pipe along with their RRHOF induction.

Regardless, he kept the band alive for 27 years, and quite frankly, was essential in helping them achieve lift-off in 1990.

Amazing drummer, damn good singer, and an underrated axe-man. The Swiss Army Knife of rock n' roll.

    Thank you, Matt.

We'll be there for you for whatever's next.

    #MFC

Would make no sense for Matt to join the Foos.  Assuming he wants to tour less, and PJ has been accommodating this…. Why join the Foos who tour harder than just about anyone?

Wow... From the way this is written and the band's response, it definitely feels like there's more to the story. Regardless, I wish him the best—he’s clearly talented and shouldn't have any trouble finding new opportunities. Hoping the band finds a drummer who brings fresh energy to this next chapter!
I don’t think Matt will be looking for any opportunities to be any kind of full time musician. I think he wanted to retire and go enjoy his life.

Wow stunning.  Hope everything is ok with him.  Drumming is so grueling so tours have to so difficult.  39 shows and he’s been the drummer for all 39.  Thanks Matt!

I remember in an interview in maybe the early 2000s, I can't remember exactly when.  Matt said he didn't want to become the Rolling Stones.  He's in his 60s now.  He probably wants to spend more time with his family.  I wish him nothing but the best.  He stepped up when PJ needed him.  He has made some wonderful music over the course of his entire career.  Best of luck, Matt!  You deserve it!

Sounds like a possible full album’s worth of Soundgarden material on the way. If they have decided on a vocalist to tour with guessing Matt is going full Soundgarden.

I assume retire from touring. Cant see him doing the Foos as some others have suggested, that wouldnt make sense.
This is my thought as well. He spoke a lot about how hard touring is for drummers after Taylor died. I’d imagine he just wants to relax and work on smaller projects.

Very curious to see how they go about finding the next person. They don’t strike me as a band that would pull in a hired gun only for touring, rather would prefer a full on new member

That's a bummer.  I wasn't a huge fan of his drumming style for PJ, but respected the dude as a person and answering the call when the band needed him.
