I don't think you need to tip too much when buying merch or paying big bucks for a beer at an arena. If your server is actually doing something, like making you a nice drink or bringing you some food, then tip well.
I was in Germany last week..we get drinks in self serving place and when i ask to pay by my card, first they ask for tip, 7, 10 or 15 %.. sorry but this is not right..i'm working in an restaurant, tips are very important to me..but why should i give tips without service??..i don't get it at all..

Tipping the merch employees seems completely unnecessary. They are just grabbing you what you want from behind the counter. Same with the folks inside who just pour you a beer from the tap. I'd do it myself if they let me.
I'm more than happy to tip bartenders and servers. Even on takeout. But it's gotten a little out of hand.
