.I completely agree that if you asked me if I'd rather stand in a line for 3 hours for something or pay an extra $100 for it, it's a no brainer. But there's a social aspect to the merch scene. I ran into a bunch of people I've met through this forum and PJ Facebook. At one point, the couple next to me asked if I was "the mayor" because so many people stopped by to chat. So it didn't really feel like a waste of 3 hours just to get a mediocre posterPJ - 09/23/98: West Palm Beach II, 08/12/00: Tampa, 04/12/03: Orlando, 04/13/03: Tampa, 06/12/08: Tampa, 06/27/08: Hartford, 09/22/09: Seattle II, 04/11/16: Tampa, 05/01 & 05/02/16: MSG I & II, 09/18/21: Sea Hear Now, 10/01 & 10/02/21: Ohana Encore I & II, 05/06 & 05/07/22: Los Angeles (Inglewood) I & II, 09/11/22: MSG, 09/16/22: Nashville, 09/02/23: St. Paul II, 09/07/23: Chicago II, 09/18 & 09/19/23: Austin I & II, 05/16 & 05/18/24: Las Vegas I & II, 08/29 & 08/31/24: Wrigley Field I & II, 09/03 & 09/04/24: MSG I & II, 09/27 & 09/29/24: Ohana Festival I & IIEV - 08/04 & 08/05/08: (Eddie solo, w/Liam Finn) NYC I & II, 11/27 & 11/28/12: (Eddie solo, w/Glen Hansard) Orlando I & II, 02/09 & 02/10/22: (Eddie & the Earthlings) Chicago I & II, 09/30/23: (Eddie & the Earthlings) Ohana Festival

the poster situation - by all bands, certainly not unique to PJ - blows my mind.
it's the same 10-20 count group of artists doing PJ, Phish, Dead & Co, Jack White, etc, so it's not like the artist benefits from a scarcity thing that a limited poster release is going to create.
On a 1500 piece poster release, does the band (or trademark holder) even make 15k$? Posters are generally $50, and I'm (wildly) assuming that it's a relatively even split between artist-band-venue-poster manufacturing company @ $10/ea.
My belief is that for the revenue it generates, it seems to be bordering on a "not worth it" situation if I'm the band and venue, as it's obvious that venues aren't in love with managing merch lines hours & hours before a show.
There's wild demand for more quantity, and that only the band, poster artist, and the fan who wants to hang the poster up, etc.
Just seems that tripling poster quantities benefits everyone except the ebay scalping contingent.
full disclosure: I waited an hour+ at Widespread Panic's show in Atlanta last month for a Marq Spusta, who hadn't done a panic show in 10 years so I'm absolutely part of the problembut it's hanging in my house, not on ebay.

I could almost talk myself into a 3 or 4 hour wait on line but the prospect of wasting that time and still have items sold out when I got to the front would be a major letdown. I'd rather pay someone to wait on line for me via ebay and ship it to my house.I got to SHN early for the presale day only because it was 10 minutes from home. Anywhere else I think I'm over the long lines.

I like what Metallica has started doing with their posters...they don't sell the posters at the show; they post a QR code on the screen before the show and you can scan it to buy then. They then ship to your house. Presumably, they print based off the demand ensuring everyone who wants one gets one.Beavis: All my friends are brown and red? What does that mean?
Butthead: It means that his friends are like turds and that they like suck.
Beavis: Heh heh. Oh yeah. Yeah! Get those spoons out of my face before I shove them up your butt!
Butthead: Huh huh.0 -

Each their own, something called " opportunity cost" ....your time would be better utilized doing just about anything.
and the reason the good stuff sold out was the 3 person limit....which i fucked with the guy in front of me like 4 people in GA merch area, after they let us in.....3 plates, 2 hats, 2 posters, 2 event shirts......didnt look like a fan
also btw, anyone notice the GUY selling merch in GA area? Bald dude....hes in the Cyndi Lauper medical commercial ( forgot, think for skin rashes)....hes prob an actor, haha so random

I waited from 1140 and was done a little before 3... never owned an MSG poster so I did what I had to do....
People will always take the opportunity to make money regardless... just like people sold GA tickets at MSG for THOUSANDS of dollars...
To each their own... if that's what makes them happy so be it...
Scored 2 posters one for me and one for a buddy. A shirt for my son and myself.
If I were Eddie Vedder, would you like me any better? - Local H0 -

Did you? Obviously not - stop judging and move on.

I didn't really take it to be judging just giving an opinion.
