The Setlist

unknownunknown Posts: 531
I’ve been a fan since the beginning.  I can’t sit back anymore and not say something.  Why are these sets so short ? 20 songs? What happened?  This isn’t the band I know.

to put things in perspective, third eye blind just opened their summer tour with a 3 hour , 26 song set.

Yeah but you had to sit through third eye blind.

In the beginning sets were even shorter. They still sound amazing.

I think the shorter sets are reasonable in the context of what PJ charges for a ticket compared to other acts and given cautionary tales of similar artists (see Hawkins, Taylor).

Or discuss a DRASTIC sudden change that has happened with the band whose board we are on to discuss…

something has changed for sure , what it is NO ONE knows and dont pretend to know because you dont.

We have Ed talking about his covid experience being really bad and maybe he left with some post covid problems, maybe taylor death had them rethink about doing longer shows on a daily basis , it could be a million things.

That being said i CANNOT wait for Wien on July 21

Judging by all the comments throughout this board and other PJ social media outlets it appears as though this is a seismic shift for the band and it's dedicated fanbase.  It is not the bands obligation, but it might go a long way if a bandmember or the group's PR addressed this change in length of setlist  and put it bed - whether the fanbase agrees or not, at least the expectations will be set going forward with an understanding as to "why" (health, sustainability concerns - Ed's vocals, or whatever reasons).  Otherwise, we all will just continue to speculate and be critical to the band and each other's opinions.  The platform has turned a little bit negative in my opinion - since the setlists have been shortened - I think that is one thing we would all agree upon.  This fanbase is rabid - for the band - I think it is not unreasonable at this point for the shift from 3 hrs./30 plus song setlists to 2 hrs./22 song setlists a night to be explained.  I will not accept "It was Stone's fault" as an explanation.  LOL

They owe us zero explanation.  I for one will just continue to enjoy the live shows while we still can.

20 songs def you get your $ worth, we all want more all the time, its human nature.

I personally think it is temp at 20-23 #, is due to the circumstances for the times we live in.

People complained about 30 songs, when some shows got 35 plus.....so take it with a grain of salt

I would rather have two hours of the guys playing songs and putting their all into it and playing closer to album tempos than 3 hours of cranking out as many songs as possible.  When did the idea that a standard show needs to be 3+ hrs take root? Some of The best shows I saw were pre the 30 song 3 hr sets.    Just please go light on Gigaton at the next show I can attend is all I ask.

Let's all agree to meet in the middle.  25-26 songs, 2 1/2 hrs.  Seems great!  Just need the band to agree.

Edit: Oh, and play some damn Riot Act and Binaural!  Sheesh.

First show I went to in 1998 was 20 songs and they closed with Soldier of Love.  If they did that now there would be a mutiny.  You know what I did after that experience is get tickets to the next closest show to me a week later.  That show was 24 songs.  This was back in 1998.  We've been spoiled the last 20 years with 25-35 song setlists depending on the tour.  If this is how they tour from now on so be it, I'm just glad we have some live PJ back after 3 years of nothing.

PJ fans:  romanticize over the 1994 tour and the Vaults from back then.

Also PJ fans:  a 22 song set with seven songs from Ten???   No more tickets for me!!!

Let’s revisit this hilarious situation when this is all over in a few years and the shows are a permanent thing of the past.

Interestingly, I was talking about shows with a friend of mine recently, and he specifically cited the (prior to this tour) length of Pearl Jam shows as being a deterrent for him. Not everyone wants to watch the same band play for 3+ hours.

Personally I’ve never been to a PJ show that I felt had gone too long, but I’ve definitely been to other shows where I felt that way (coughBruceSpringsteencough). And I’ve been to shows with headlining sets that cam in under 90 minutes and were fantastic. Duration and song count aren’t everything.

They only had a few albums to play off of in 94. They have 11 now.

I think 25 would be a perfect spot as long as songs are played well. But come on mix it up a bit nothing from 2000’s albums. Not sure what it is I don’t think it’s cuz they don’t want to get burnt out they barley tour anymore and when they do it’s for a month then there done

I dont know. Let's look at phoenix 2013 as a random selection compared to phx 22 since it's leg1 show.

    2013
2:52 minutes roughly and 35 songs

    2022
2:27 minutes and only 23 songs

PJ songs are typically not very long. These aren't 9 to 15 minute monsters. Let's average it to 5 minutes (and thats generous most are shorter). 35 songs / 180 minutes on a 3 hour show = 5.14 min per cut and Ed talk time

A 2.5 hour set in theory would result in a loss of about 6 songs. Say gigaton songs are a little longer so lets say we lose 8 songs. So it would be around 28 song sets. If you go to 2:15 minutes 25 songs.

We aren't getting 2:27 minutes of a show time.

If we were consistent 25 to 30 song sets in the 2.25 to 2.5 hour slot the math would add up. Just varies based on song selection (e.g. lukin) the songs they are playing like gtf, dte, elderly, are shorter songs further mystifying this.

Going to 23 songs for the length of the average PJ song is incredibly odd. Which leads to speculation as to what's going on. Using the phoenix example:
23×5 = 115 min of music. Leaving roughly 35 minutes of Ed storytelling and banter about his niece or favorite celeb to round out to the 2:27

Math won't ever let you down. This is all rounding and approximates but it tells the story. The music costs more, we get less of it, and it's discouraging to many of the faithful leading to these conversations.

personally i think the setlists so far have been crap to much ten at least 6 or 7 songs on 20+setlist and a couple of covers

Yeah but you had to sit through third eye blind.

Best comment in this whole thread. It's truly sad what happened to that band and its founding members that Jerkins still finds ways to bring lawsuits against.

Quite heroic of the OP to speak up!  It is odd that the sets have become significantly shorter but I don't think that's going to keep me from going to a show.

Of course we are but its early days I'm sure they can work it out to keep everyone them and us happy, a bit of tinkering with timings and order etc to make it to 26 or 27. I'm sure it will happen

I’m in the minority, but I like a shorter, tighter set. I’m old and my feet hurt by the end. Give me 20 or so and I’m good.
