Can the US really handle the Ukraine situation if Putin invades? On top of the supply chain issues and rising inflation what moves can we actually make that don't risk making our situation worse at home? Really hoping Vlad doesn't invade so we don't have to find out.

Oil and gas will go up and price and will hurt. At the same time, the ruble will plummet (it has been for a few months) so that puts a ton of pressure at home for Putin as well. There's no scenario where this ends well if the shooting starts. The question is whether Putin thinks the upside is good enough for him. But I just don't see how he holds Ukraine. Yes, he took Donbas and Crimea, but there are a ton of ethnic Russians there. When you move towards the west, these are real Ukrainians with a real national identity. And they have 450k troops. Getting to Kyiv and holding it long term will be bloody business. And the sanctions against not just the nation, but individual leaders of the Kremlin and the oligarchs will be punishing.
I continue to think this is brinksmanship to extract concessions related to NATO exercises, troop rotations, etc. There is room to give here. What cannot be given is a guarantee to never allow Ukraine into NATO.
America doesn’t believe in peace. They are a nation founded on violence and try to bully the world through world through violence… Gotta keep the military industrial complex going…
They only spend 500 + billion per year on the war machine. Imagine using some of that money for actual good..
peace is not the American way…watch the evening news.
What happens if America bows out of the military industrial complex? Power loves a vacuum, and if you think the States are the only disingenuous military-involved actors, I have a bridge to sell you.
I prefer that he continues to melt down about it, all while supporting our gov't through his watching of the NFL, spending money on PJ. com and all of the other activities that feeds the coffers of the US military.
Thank you!

This is entirely predictable and exactly what US intelligence predicted Russia would do as a pretext for invasion. With the Olympics wrapping up, it's getting close.

We should do the same but shutter their embassy and consulates and order all those carrying Russian, Belarusian and Khazhak passports out of the country in seven days or face arrest and deportation. If they don’t leave, we seize their assets and come looking for them.

That's a little too Gazpacho for me. You don't attack diplomats or citizens of another country. Putin would be thrilled to make them martyrs. He could care less about them.

Its not an "attack" to ask diplomatic staff to leave. Boris and Olga aren't just tourists at the beach, staying in a POOTWH condo. The second part is if putin on the ritz invades Ukraine.

Ukrainian rebels evacuate civilians to Russia amid crisis
By VLADIMIR ISACHENKOV, YURAS KARMANAU and AAMER MADHANI
22 mins ago
KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Spiking tensions in eastern Ukraine on Friday aggravated Western fears of a Russian invasion and a new war in Europe, with a humanitarian convoy hit by shelling and pro-Russian rebels evacuating civilians from the conflict zone. A car bombing hit the eastern city of Donetsk, but no casualties were reported.
The Kremlin declared massive nuclear drills to flex its military muscle, and President Vladimir Putin pledged to protect Russia’s national interests against what it sees as encroaching Western threats. U.S. and European leaders, meanwhile, grasped for ways to keep the peace and Europe’s post-Cold War security order.
While Putin held out the possibility of diplomacy, a cascade of developments this week have have further exacerbated East-West tensions and fueled war worries. This week's actions have fed those concerns: U.S. and European officials, focused on an estimated 150,000 Russian troops posted around Ukraine’s borders, warn the long-simmering separatist conflict in eastern Ukraine could provide the spark for a broader attack.
Vice President Kamala Harris said the U.S. still hopes Russia will de-escalate but is ready to hit it with tough sanctions in case of an attack. U.S. leaders this week issued their most dire warnings yet that Moscow could order an invasion of Ukraine any day.
“We remain, of course, open to and desirous of diplomacy ... but we are also committed, if Russia takes aggressive action, to ensure there will be severe consequence,” Harris said at the annual Munich Security Conference.
While Russia snubbed this year's conference, lines of communication remain open: The U.S. and Russian defense chiefs spoke Friday, and U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin called for de-escalation, the return of Russian forces surrounding Ukraine to their home bases, and a diplomatic resolution, according to the Pentagon. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov agreed to meet next week.
Immediate worries focused on eastern Ukraine, where Ukrainian forces have been fighting pro-Russia rebels since 2014 in a conflict that has killed some 14,000 people.
A bombing struck a car outside the main government building in the major eastern city of Donetsk, according to an Associated Press journalist there. The head of the separatists' forces, Denis Sinenkov, said the car was his, the Interfax news agency reported.
There were no reports of casualties and no independent confirmation of the circumstances of the blast. Uniformed men inspected the burned-out car. Broken glass littered the area,
Shelling and shooting are common along the line that separates Ukrainian forces and the rebels, but targeted violence is unusual in rebel-held cities like Donetsk.
However, the explosion and the announced evacuations were in line with U.S. warnings of so-called false-flag attacks that Russia would use to justify an invasion. The U.S. State Department noted that Blinken had warned of “this type of false-flag operation” on Thursday at the U.N. Security Council.
Separatists in the Luhansk and Donetsk regions that form Ukraine's industrial heartland known as the Donbas said they are evacuating civilians to Russia. The announcement appeared to be part of Moscow’s efforts to counter Western warnings of a Russian invasion, and paint Ukraine as the aggressor instead.
Denis Pushilin, head of the Donetsk rebel government, said women, children and the elderly would go first, and that Russia has prepared facilities for them. Pushilin alleged in a video statement that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was going to order an imminent offensive in the area.
Authorities began moving children from an orphanage in Donetsk, and other residents boarded buses for Russia. Long lines formed at gas stations as more people prepared to leave on their own.
Putin ordered his emergencies minister to fly to the Rostov region bordering Ukraine to help organize the exodus and ordered the government to offer a payment of 10,000 rubles (about $130) to each evacuee, equivalent to about half of an average monthly salary in the war-ravaged Donbas.
Ukraine denied planning any offensive, with Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba saying that “Ukraine does not conduct or plan any such actions in the Donbas.”
“We are fully committed to diplomatic conflict resolution only,” he tweeted.

But, yeah, this sucks. This is a really big deal and it's shocking how many people either a) don't give a shit or b) have no fucking clue.
People like Randy Paul. Me thinks there’s a shit ton of kompromont on all those repub CPAC attendees that have visited Moscow and Ukraine from 2014-2020. Not to mention the NRA and Turning Point USA bachanals.
Haven’t we’ve come further than this? Why do we still have something called war?
I saw on the news a 17 year old Ukraine boy is digging up trenches on his spare time, trying to help his country. So Russians and Ukraines are going to shoot each other in cold blood? This feels so extremely fucked up,

You would think in a world where, for all intents and purposes, borders as we know them have been built out and developed countries live in a world of global relationships that they wouldn't be this stupid. But here Russia is - nothing like punching down.
Putin needs another country to loot. His people live in abject poverty, with a per capita GPD the same as Kazakhstan, less than half of friggin' Georgia (the country). And look at the poverty levels of the Donbass and Crimea regions. He has turned those into states of decay. Yet, Putin is literally considered to be the wealthiest person in the world. He is corrupt, murderous and our enemy.

This is about to get very ugly. With 75% of Russian forces along Ukraine…. Russia knows no one is going to do anything except sanctions. And he doesn’t care about his people at all

That's why they sanction the assets of the oligarchs, Dumas members and other political leaders directly. No it isn't perfect, but it will hurt them personally.

I'm talking about forward sanctions. These are not in place.
I also think they should be removed from SWIFT if they invade. That's the international financial clearing house run out of Belgium. It would effectively cut them off from their cash around the world and ability to sell exports. It would be devastating. EU has control of that. That's the hammer.
