Decision to invade Ukraine raises questions over Putin’s ‘sense of reality

Officials in western capitals concerned by ‘despotic mindset’ of Russian president and rambling Monday speech increased doubts

    https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/feb/24/putin-russian-president-ukraine-invasion-mental-fitness

let's be honest. we heard the same hyperbole coming from trump for 4 years. and we heard from "people in the know" that trump was on the brink of a total mental collapse the entire time.

Forgive my ignorance, but am I the only one who thought Chernobyl was not in use anymore?
I thought the same. They moved a giant cement dome over it that was supposed to last like 50 years and are in the process of planning the upgrade.
So I don’t know what staff were evacuated. A few decades too late for that.
Just looked it up. The new structure was built in 2020 and this one is supposed to last 100 years. Then they’ll just cover it with more cement I guess.

With my anxiety in complete overdrive and the fact that I know I shouldn't do this I'm going to ask anyway.  How do we see this playing out? Does Russia attack North America? Ukraine surrender relatively quickly and become neutral like Finland?
    Nuclear attack?

None of those.  Putin attempts to hold Kyiv with a puppet govt. I don't think he can.  He will try to negotiate for Ukraine to never be allowed in NATO as well.

Meanwhile the sanctions take their toll,  ruble crashes,  Russia is cut off from SWIFT while Ukraine guerrillas make life difficult.  I think he retreats to the two breakaway oblasts and stays there.

it looks like the Ukrainians are in this for the long haul. They have already barred the exit of able-bodied men aged 18-60, meaning they are expected to stay and fight. Martial law. Guns and Javelins are being handed out to militia forces in an effort to bolster defenses.  Blood score thus far: 137 Ukrainian casualties. 350 Russians. Go Ukraine. Also, saw a diplomat woman from Ukraine talking about how after Russians  surrendered after a battle at the Belarusian border, the Russian soldiers were saying that they had no idea they would be attacking civilians… who the hell did they think they’d be battling at some point, and what bs have they been fed as to why this is happening? Let’s hope Putin is realizing he’s on his own

No reason to engage unless he has something useful to share. Just here to derail and antagonize. Clearly above us lowly commoners who are unable to meet his superior intellect.

I am with you on this. What I’m saddened about is the general naïveté that has existed on this forum for years. I was talking about this shit pre-trump. I said that this was coming and that the world is sleep walking towards disaster. I do not doubt that the Ukrainian’s are committed to fight but I doubt the West is willing or even able to support them. This is a forum that believes western civilization is inherently evil. Rot is everywhere. The barbarians are at the gates. They know we are weak. China will move next. Then Iran. There will be no Putin retreat. There will be no European tour.
