Wait wait wait...people are seriously comparing what's happing in fucking China to our mandates in the US? Is that seriously happening here?

    Hoooo boy

I don't see that happening. All I see is people mentioning it and wondering why no one seems to be interested in addressing it.
Someone mentioned the reason people didn't want to talk about it was because it hits close to home for the anti maskers as they feared that happening here or something. I find that notion to be quite ridiculous.
ok, if that's what you are referring to, yes, but I don't consider what is currently happening being compared to current mandates in the US/Canada. I do think it's a valid conversation to have, regarding just how much power the government should be given/allowed to take when it comes to personal freedom and movement. Sure, China is an extreme example, but reasonable people here in Canada were seriously concerned about the use of the emergencies act against the freedom convoy folks where it came to police power and freezing bank accounts. I personally disagree with those concerns, but I can still consider them valid.

And I can't imagine the frustration of being a small business owner and being told that I can't do business for people to buy groceries because my square footage doesn't fall into the category of an essential business, but people can go to Best Buy to get a tv.

there was a lot of stupidity to a lot of these rules; I get that they couldn't specify different rules for every single business. But still...a tattoo shop that is as clean and sanitary as a dentist's office not being allowed to do business for a year? that would be maddening as that business owner.

so I get it when people are skeptical of the powers that be telling us that these rules were based science, when a lot of them clearly weren't; they were based in science AND economics. So just come out and say that. They didn't. Not here at least. so when the trust is lost on little items like that, trust can ultimately be lost completely and then it turns into "trudeau is a dictator". again, I don't agree with it, but I get how it happens.

Anyone else following this "COVID-Zero" lockdown in Shanghai, China? It's insane how those people are being treated.
Absolutely insane. I touched on it a few days ago here. No one seems interested in it.
I think people would prefer to ignore Shanghai, because it hits close to the bone of what people who were against masks and lockdowns were worried about happening here.
Or... and stay with me here... none of us are surprised because it's China and China is a totalitarian society.  So when totalitarians act in a way that eliminates freedom and doesn't respect basic civil rights, we're not surprised.  I think your conclusion is far afield.
I disagree with both. I think it’s a case of who posted it is why it was ignored. The only response to bringing up China was “gross.” Had someone not right leaning brought it up, there would have been a discussion about how horrible it was. To be almost 2 1/2 years into this and China is still locking down and people are screaming is more than anyone probably predicted.
Well you're wrong when it pertains to me specifically and guessing on the rest of the crew.  No I didn't 'predict' that they would be locked down 2 1/2 years later but at the same time, I didn't give it any thought either.  I'm not currently a contributing writer to a Chinese think tank so don't give it much thought.  I'd be surprised if anyone else gives it much thought either.
I wasn’t referring to you, or anyone specifically. That was just the first explanation that came to mind. Maybe a more plausible one is others didn’t know what he was referring to when Nicky said he’s glad he wasn’t in China right now. But posting a video of it got more responses.

Many people on the right think that the Covid response was testing the waters for a China style social credit system, so therefore if you don't show the appropriate level of outrage at what's going on, it means we'll support the credit system here.

I have been trying to tell people that cash is king and don't give it up.

If you want this class system here in the US I say please watch Black Mirror.  That is about the best thing I can use for what is coming.  1984 and Fahrenheit 451 may be dated for kids but the show isn't...

Oh joy. One strain 10% fatality rate, the other 1%. How many will refuse vaccination when the time comes? Stop the world, I want to get off.

Massachusetts health authorities said Wednesday that they confirmed a case of a rare and sometimes serious viral illness called monkeypox — the first infection identified in the United States this year amid a rash of cases outside the disease’s typical territory.

Monkeypox, which can be passed to animals and humans, is usually found in Central and West Africa. But health authorities in Europe have confirmed more than a dozen cases this month and are investigating dozens more. The two latest infections confirmed in the United Kingdom “have no travel links” to a place where monkeypox is regularly found, officials said, suggesting the virus may be spreading through the community.

Scientists are trying to answer questions about the outbreak of a disease not known to spread easily between humans. The fact that cases are emerging in several countries at once — with signs of “sustained” spread in people — is striking, said Aris Katzourakis, a professor of evolution and genomics at the University of Oxford.

The disease can spread through contact with animals, infected people and materials used by infected people, health authorities say. Examples listed by the CDC include contact with bodily fluids, contact with monkeypox sores and infection through “respiratory droplets” in a “close setting” such as a shared household.

Monkeypox can be deadly, but two major strains of the virus pose different risks. About 1 in 10 people infected with a Congo Basin strain have been found to die, according to the World Health Organization, while a West African strain appeared to be fatal for about 1 in 100 people infected.

That milder strain is the one infecting people who were hospitalized in the United Kingdom, health authorities said. It is not clear what strain the Massachusetts patient contracted.

I am sighing big sighs this morning.  For quite a  few years, we have known a woman who is a renowned herbalist, and for the last several years I have been purchasing an herbal tincture that she makes and I take for anxiety.  I wouldn't say the herbs have cured my anxiety, but they do help some and any help is good.
So anyway, I found out recently that she is anti-masking, very likely anti-vaccination, and refers to the pandemic as "the plandemic".  Finding out that someone who I believe to be quite intelligence actually  believes the disease is a conspiracy is just flat out depressing.  I'm beginning to think the bigger disease is ignorance.
    ~sigh, sigh, sigh~

Brian.  Unfortunately many people that are otherwise very sane but are into the natural health/wellness movement have been taken in by the conspiracy theories.  In fact there is definitely information out there that specifically taylored conspiracy narratives are coming out with the specific goal of taking otherwise left leaning people and open them to other conspiracies.  I have some in my life, I try to explain that just because western medicine works it doesn't mean that herbalism, eating healthy mindfullness etc is at risk, but to them it is all a con. It is really sad and though most of these people are not ignorant in other aspects, they have taken a zealous almost religious stance on the issue and refuse to see any contrary evidence.  Sorry to hear about your friend.

Thanks for the thoughtful post, static.
Back in 1999 and 2000, I worked at out local Community Health Library.  One of the things I learned there, and that we advocated for, was the notion of "complimentary therapies".  The idea is with that is that what makes most sense is to use the best available sources for prevention and healing from both standard medicine, and naturopathic and other alternative forms of medicine.  I'm afraid my herbalist is not so open to that way of thinking. Its sad to see her become so- as you so well put it- zealous about her view of the pandemic.
And to make things even more frustrating, my wife tells me she believes our chiropractor may also be quietly aligned with the conspiracy views.  I fear she may be right.
Thank goodness my general practitioner seems to be quite level headed!

I’m shocked anyone would pay $440 for the card. When I got my first shot I was surprised how unofficial the whole thing looked. Anyone with a printer can fake one with some card stock. They didn’t even write the lot number on mine. No nurse signature or anything.

2nd booster on board monday. pfizer again. all 4 shots. not having had any side effects that were debilitating,  I went into work that night. about 17 hours post shot I start feeling like shit. chills, aches and a screaming headache. All while driving a truck....

now I have swollen lymph nodes on that side. Wasnt aware it was a thing.

so for those considering booster #2 (immuno compromised and those 50+), go into with eyes open having read up on the additional side effects possible.

Pfizer says tweaked COVID-19 shots boost omicron protection
    By LAURAN NEERGAARD
    Today

Pfizer announced Saturday that tweaking its COVID-19 vaccine to better target the omicron variant is safe and works — just days before regulators debate whether to offer Americans updated booster shots this fall.

The vaccines currently used in the U.S. still offer strong protection against severe COVID-19 disease and death -- especially if people have gotten a booster dose. But those vaccines target the original coronavirus strain and their effectiveness against any infection dropped markedly when the super-contagious omicron mutant emerged.

Now with omicron’s even more transmissible relatives spreading widely, the Food and Drug Administration is considering ordering a recipe change for the vaccines made by both Pfizer and rival Moderna in hopes that modified boosters could better protect against another COVID-19 surge expected this fall and winter.

Pfizer and its partner BioNTech studied two different ways of updating their shots -- targeting just omicron, or a combination booster that adds omicron protection to the original vaccine. They also tested whether to keep today’s standard dosage -- 30 micrograms -- or to double the shots’ strength.

In a study of more than 1,200 middle-aged and older adults who’d already had three vaccine doses, Pfizer said both booster approaches spurred a substantial jump in omicron-fighting antibodies.

“Based on these data, we believe we have two very strong omicron-adapted candidates,” Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla said in a statement.

Pfizer’s omicron-only booster sparked the strongest immune response against that variant.

But many experts say combination shots may be the best approach because they would retain the proven benefits of the original COVID-19 vaccine while adding new protection against omicron. And Pfizer said a month after people received its combo shot, they had a 9 to 11-fold increase in omicron-fighting antibodies. That’s more than 1.5 times better than another dose of the original vaccine.

And importantly, preliminary lab studies show the tweaked shots also produce antibodies capable of fighting omicron’s genetically distinct relatives named BA.4 and BA.5, although those levels weren’t nearly as high.

Moderna recently announced similar results from tests of its combination shot, what scientists call a “bivalent” vaccine.

The studies weren’t designed to track how well updated boosters prevented COVID-19 cases. Nor is it clear how long any added protection would last.

    continues....

This is silly. Omicron will be long gone and replaced by some new variant by the time they make updated vaccines available to public.

thanks. general run down feeling after the first wave thing that night. took a day(night for me) on wednesday and got some good sleep in which helped too.

Lymph nodes have subsided. gradually diminishing each day.
