    Jimmy Hendrix Are You Experienced
    Black Sabbath First Album
    Joy Division Unknown Pleasures
The Bad Brains Pay to Cum
    Van Halen I

You saved me a lot of thinking & typing with your 2 lists- thanks! I'd add these to them and that would be my list:

    Jeff Buckley, Grace
Pink Floyd, Wish You Were Here
Kendrick Lamar, To Pimp A Butterfly
Childish Gambino, This is America (song & video)
Sinead O'Connor, The Lion & The Cobra
    Peter Tosh, Equal Rights
    Erykah Badu, Baduism
    Clash, London Calling
    Clash, Sandinista
Kendrick Lamar and Mac Miller were the new faces of hiphop in 08/09?  Those two definitely were game changers to the new wave of rappers.

  • We went from albums to songs.

    Let's keep to albums.

MC5 I could get behind, Big Audio Dynamite?  Not really.  Def Jam artists were doing what they were already.

And my NEWEST and MOST IMPORTANT DISCOVERY: The Black woman who could be said to have INVENTED GRUNGE who was so ahead of her time, she was easily erased from history.  I was horrified I didn't hear of her until last year... and guess who one of her drummers was? Matt Cameron, so he was in on this history-making band!

    TINA BELL of Bam Bam

I always thought Patti Smith was grunge with her bands sound.  Even some early hardcore could pass too.  Music is sooo much fun to debate and chat about though!
Agreed on Patti Smith! I'd just say Tina Bell and the sounds they were making were much more directly the precursors of Grunge, but Patti Smith was a game changer on so many fronts, I'm always good with her name in the "Innovator" category ;)

I've always thought that Janice Joplin would have been a great Hardcore frontwoman.  That might be an idea for a thread!  Swap out musicians to other genre's.

Agree totally on both, but gotta admit it still annoys the ish outta me to have to admit to the brilliance of Kanye! He as a person just annoys me no end, but can't deny he's a visionary & incredibly talented maker of music...

I will confess here what could rightly be called "bias" and "closed minded", maybe even to the extreme:
I only have a vague notion of what Kanye ("Ye") sounds like and thus have no idea why he is often referred to as a genius.  This goes all the way back to 9-11 when West and Mike Meyers spoke side-by-side regarding the incident.  The man was not at all well spoken and basically called George Bush a racist (a comment that had nothing to do with 9-11) and later reversed his statement.  From that point on, pretty much all I've read about him indicates an extreme ego and further confusion about where he stands on things.  His arrogant posturing is so off putting to me, I don't see anyway I would enjoy or appreciate his music.
But I curious as to why some consider him "ahead of his time".

For me, 'ahead of its time" means a new/modified musical style that at the time was experimental, but soon other artists either followed or emerged in that style.

Saw it already listed, but Jane's Addiction Nothings Shocking was definitely ahead of its time.

Operation Ivy also was an outstanding project that has stood the test of time.

From Kanye’s work as a producer before “Through the Wire” through to his present work, he continues to not only evolve but innovate.

Also, I don’t know if you’ve ever known a bipolar person whose meds might need a little tweaking (or who just isn’t taking them), but Kanye’s “extreme ego” and “arrogant posturing” are classic examples of what that generally looks like. He just so happens to have his moments in public, which also makes sense to me based on my history with adjacency to bipolar folks.

That’s not an excuse for his behavior, of course; it’s a reason.

Why hasn’t @The Juggler started a “Your mom” thread?

This would’ve been a great one for that sadly nonexistent thread.

That's cool.  I have no bias against mental health issues.

How about Hybrid by Theory Linkin Park?  That album spawned a whole slew of new bands.  They kind of ran w the genre and made Emo theirs.

EDIT: Music was getting stale for me as far as rock goes and these guys were a breath of fresh air.

Forgot about Save Ferris.  Saw them a bunch of times when in college, my buddy's band played a lot of the same crappy gigs as them.  If memory servers a member of my buddy's band was in a ska band called One Legged Bob which either shared members with Save Ferris or someone was banging someone else from the band...something like that.
Anyway, I didn't love them.  I didn't love most of the sounds we sat through to support our friend's band.  Did a loooooot of drinking at dumphole places.

Were you in Socal during that time? 93-97 ska had a big following.  Swing dancing made a comeback in the Bay area too.  Quite a fun time to be alive.

Yes, in LA from 92-2012.  In the 90s was out seeing music a lot.
