AR15's aren't the cause. anymore than a car is the cause of someone speeding. it's the tool that allows the capability, but it's not the cause. your computer isn't the cause of you saying stupid things online. lol
How many people who have ready access to firearms would stab or beat someone in a fit of anger or revenge, jealousy, frustration, etc.? Way fewer than what we see with guns laying around.

I don't just say stupid things on the interwebs but people shoot people because they're wimps and would never throw a punch or stab someone, never mind 10-15 people at a turn. Firearms make killing much less personal, intimate and a hell of a lot easier.

Easier to speed in a Prius or Honda Fit or Porsche?
you take these guns out of the hands of nutjobs and yes, the mass shootings would stop. But that still doesn't mean the gun is the "cause". it's the tool used to get to the effect.
“Nut jobs?” If “responsible” gun owners, from manufacturers to end user/owner were in fact “responsible,” you wouldn’t see half the carnage you see today. Denying that the easy access to firearms isn’t part of the “cause” is why nothing will change.

Thoughts and prayers, prayers and thoughts.

I would say the cause of the high body counts is definitely the type of gun used.

absolutely....and no one expects mass shootings to stop. We just want to make obtaining the weapons as difficult as possible. It isn't unreasonable to have a waiting period and detailed background check.

we see just as much violence in entertainment up here as you folks do. our entertainment is basically 85% american. 10% canadian, 5% awful british comedy.

and no one was killed ON jenny jones. it was a few days after the taping.
What's your take on why there is more violence in the U.S.
Is it what H2TM says here (surely a part of it)?  Or are we just inherently more prone to violence?  I really am not sure.
Any excuse but the relative ease with which firearms are available and accessed. Any.

    I think it's a combination of things.

    1) access to guns
    2) gun culture in the US (buying into the idea that the US was "born of violence" and that the constitution is like the bible)
    3) mental health issues

we all have #3. But we don't all have #'s 1 and 2. So yes, I basically agree with Halifax.

Yeah, I can go along with that.  But I do somehow sense that we Americans are more prone to violence and that at least exacerbates the issue.  In any  case, I totally agree easy access to guns here is a major MAJOR factor.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) signed 10 gun-related bills Monday that will bar those younger than 21 from buying or owning semi-automatic rifles, ban the purchase of body armor for most civilians and strengthen the state’s red flag laws, among other provisions.

And when the next shooting happens in NY, instead of looking for ways to prevent/limit such incidents, republicans will just point to this and say, see, nothing the democrats do would have prevented this. Must be nice just playing devil's advocate all the time and not having to worry about actually doing anything, but still hold office.
    It's a hopeless situation...

    NY laws being introduced.

    Red Flag laws expanding.
    Microstamping bullets.
No one under 21 can purchase semiauto rifles.
Social Media has to police their platforms more.  (Not sure how they do this?)An executive order will also go through that has LE monitor social media for warning signs.
Body armor illegal for non LE.
Firearm definitions are expanded to try and put other firing devices on the lists.
High capacity magazines that were bought legally are now illegal.
Stating Mass harm is now against the law.
    Expanding shared information between agencies.
Gun salespersons need to be up to date on how to write transfers and State Police need to inspect gun dealers every 3 years.

the problem with not seizing them means all those guns are still in circulation. all the regulation and registration won't change the fact that a certain percentage of gun owner simply do not adequately secure their firearms away from people who shouldn't have them.

a mandatory buyback program coupled with a hefty jail sentence for anyone who is non compliant would do wonders.
I would say a voluntary buyback program and required registration...maybe even a program where you have to let the police verify the weapon is still in your possession every few years.
I'd be interested to know what percentage of gun owners in america would voluntarily sell back their gun. I'd say in the zero point something to zero point something but slightly higher range.

the propaganda associated with a buyback, mandatory or voluntary, by the right wing media would be like something none of us had ever seen. so I don't think that's ever going to happen. I think Biden et al are going to try to ban "assault style" rifles like Clinton did. But he'll grandfather in current owners and require registration, which will do absolutely nothing. And it will fail anyway. I'm sure even a few democrats would vote against it.
At market rates a lot. Above market rates even more.
giving out a 20 dollar gift card per gun, not a lot.

At the end of the day it’s about incentives

isn't "freedum from tyranny" the biggest incentive of them all amongst this crowd? or I suppose I'm overestimating the amount of nut jobs in the gun owner group.
They may not sell all their guns, but they might get rid of half of them if it’s enough money.

I agree a buyback program is probably less effective among single gun owners
That’s exactly what I would do if it was retail value. It’s too much of a hassle and expensive to sell a gun privately, so I end up keeping some I will probably never use. If I got fair market I’d sell them.
So up to $10.00 and waiting up to 30 days for a CBI check to come back on the buyer is “too much of a hassle and expensive?”
I support and will defend the 2nd Amendment, given said that. I as a law abiding citizen can wait 30 days. I do not need high capacity magazines to protect myself and family. I don't plan to go toe to toe with my government with military grade hardware. There NEEDS to be common sense gun laws for this insanity to stop.
So I’ll ask you, if you can’t possess an assault rifle to defend yourself, are you unable to defend yourself and do you believe that your 2A rights will have been taken away?

I wrote a lengthy response to your question, and stopped myself. I realized that a healthy conversation between strangers sharing different opinions no longer matter anymore. To engage in one will just lead into negativity and insults.

Well, to be faaaaaaaiirrrr, Hunter (and his wife) have broken a few gun laws that are on the books. Of course, I don't see why investigating/prosecuting him (them) should hold up passing any new laws--that is, unless Johnson is suggesting a quid pro quo: Give us Hunter, and we'll consider your silly gun reform bill.

Too bad it wasn’t a knife, bat, stick or a lamp the kid went for. More guns are needed.

I know he is an actor but I believed that was totally from the heart.  This might be the most inspiring talk from Washington since Obama.

Edit:  Just finished.  Reporters really took that all to heart by just all yelling out questions at once.

I hope they pass and lead the way to more states doing the same.
my bet is anything that passes at state level gets overturned by the supreme court. just sayin.

it is imperative that biden expands the court. but he is a coward, so he won't.
You want to restructure the courts to rule in your favor?  Really?

Moscow Mitchy Baby did so why not Brandon? The concepts of “fairness” and “doing what is right” is long gone from one political party and it’s not Brandon’s. Where have you been?
