Young musicians’ dreams were dashed when the U.S. Marine Band followed orders to cancel a concert featuring middle and high school students of color, a result of the Trump administration’s executive order banning DEI initiatives. 60 Minutes, Sunday.

Would it surprise you to learn that many are harmed by “DEI initiatives?”
    Who are these many harmed?

I am a straight white male.

I was recently passed over for what I suspect may have been a DEI advancement. Not that he wasn’t qualified, but i do think it’s entirely possible, given many factors I won’t reveal on a public forum, that we were so evenly matched, HR “encouraged” our management to choose him.

Am I upset? Do I feel like a victim? No and no. Why not? Because I know that DEI isn’t about appearance or colour of skin for optics. It’s about diversifying your team to bring in different cultures, beliefs, upbringings, because this strengthens your team’s capabilities with different ideas and ways of doing things.

But it’s not always the case. Diversity is often just color, sex etc and then end up with all the same people in corporate.

I personally dislike many DEI hiring initiatives. I love DEI training initiatives and think everyone should take more training on implicit bias etc.

I dislike that we in the US have traded so many merit scholarships for DEI and need based. It’s certainly not how I would run my university.

i think is dumb to dismiss people being hurt from DEI (not you specifically) and I think it’s dumb to think they are all hurting someone.  I feel a correction was needed but not wholesale changes that are basically encouraging discrimination, racism and sexism.

Do you think Lorena Bobbitt could benefit from DEI training? Anyone?

They weren’t hurt by DEI. They were hurt by a moron applying ut incorrectly. People co-opt and corrupt ideas all the time.

We too often take the short sighted approach and apply immediate blame, which is easy and lazy. And this is what Trump does ad nauseum. And his idiots believe him, because it takes zero critical thought.

So - I kinda agree with your first sentence but there were a significant # of morons though in my experience.  Often, what I have seen, it's lead to pockets of "diversity".  Meaning people hiring and promoting people that look like them and they weren't white males.  When I see that, it bothers me.  Cause it is exactly the issue of implicit bias just now being played by a different race, sex, etc.

I do think hiring diversity of thought is great.  I think too many lazy people think this just means something I can see

I agree 100% with your second thought.

Unfortunately overcorrection is part of the process. A correction needs to be made…people take it too far…pushback occurs…hopefully land where it should have in the first place.

Trump was an overcorrection. I’m hoping we land on normalcy in 2028.

So I had no clue which thread i should mention this in, since I don't think there is a thread for actual good news anymore. But a story that has weirdly been off the radar recently is the fact that Harvard has decided to give free tuition to students whose families make less than $200K/year, and an actual full ride (so living expenses as well) to students whose families makes less than $100K/year.
I think this is the first good news story coming out of the US for a while! I am so pleased about it. Harvard clearly sees that there is a huge problem with spoiled rich kids filling up the school at this point. I'm sure that the middle class kids come in as much harder workers in general.

The commenters supporting DEI discrimination are completely missing the point of my earlier post.  It’s not about choosing which candidate is best for an open position.

it is about corporate leadership publicly claiming they are “behind on diversity workforce targets” on earnings related calls and then creating a reorganization ( after claiming record profits for multiple years) and then FIRING  white male WORKERS WITH EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE REVIEWS in a specialized field and using remote office tactics to bring in out of town DEI replacement workers as part of a “reorganization.”

Isn't this true in any workplace? There is always someone that thinks they are the best but they really aren't. Excellent performance reviews don't mean shit if you are a dick.

Deleted two long posts originally with evidence supporting harmful DEI practices. It’s wasted on these pages with an audience crying about maga evils when in fact aren’t all that different when evils caused by their ideologies are presented.
