I get the resistance to political correctness, but also came to the conclusion a while ago that since I'm not Native American, it wasn't my call as to whether or not these team names are offensive.
"Redskins" obviously had to go, as did the Chief Wahoo logo - IMO those changes were no brainers.
I'm on board with changing the name from Indians, on the premise alone of how stupid it is, but should the Blackhawks / Chiefs / Braves have to change? IDK, not for me to say.
Personally the Blackhawks jerseys are some of my favorite in the NHL, and I don't think they're offensive in the least, but again, that's not really my call to make.

whether the logo is deemed to be cartoonish or respectful i don't think is the only issue: it's also co-opting a culture for entertainment purposes.
seriously though, it is about time they changed it. the logo is timeless, but super racist though.
They dropped the logo a few years ago.
For whatever reason I never saw the logo as racist. It was a caricature to me and not to be taken seriously. people losing their shit over this makes sense. People don't like change and especially with their sports teams.
Some of the other name changes that I think were ridiculous were the Pelicans. The Devil rays to Rays. The Bullets to the Wizards. The Washington Bullets was head and shoulders the coolest name for a team anywhere.
I will be petitioning Hockey and Baseball to change the name of the Devils and Angels. We should separate religion from sports. On that note, go Halos!
no offence, but that's your privilege talking. saying it makes sense that people lose their shit over losing a logo or a name meant for entertainment, but it shouldn't bother the people that it is caricaturising, is pretty tone deaf.
I just don't give a shit about certain things and yes I am very tone deaf. Things that bother people have zero effect on me. I know I have been working on empathy for years now.

but what i find interesting is that you seem to empathize with those that are bothered by the logo/name change. why is that? is it because it also bothers you, or..?
I forgot about the Blackhawks ... name and logo should be retired into the scrap heap of history...
But...if it is a tribute to the war chief is it bad?
Black Hawk was a chief that was forced to give up land to white people ... a sport primarily played by white people are trying to convince people that the name black hawk is in honour of chief Blackhawk...

No , what I said was " people losing their shit over this makes sense. People don't like change and especially with their sports teams."
You ever been to a bar and watched the people get elated or sad from watching their team? People are really passionate about sports more so than other things.

yes, of course I have.
my bad, I misread your post as identifying with those people. my brother in law lives in green bay and i've seen it first hand. i get it.
I get the resistance to political correctness, but also came to the conclusion a while ago that since I'm not Native American, it wasn't my call as to whether or not these team names are offensive.

I know Chicago banned fans from wearing head dresses and war paint.
But yeah...Cheifs, Braves....doesn't seem like a slight
Interesting snippet from that CNN article:
"The Chicago Blackhawks Foundation had previously partnered with the American Indian Center of Chicago (AIC) to educate the public about American Indians, but the AIC ended that agreement in 2019, citing the perpetuation of "harmful stereotypes.""

ugh...
I'm probably biased but Blackhawks, Chiefs, Braves, even Indians just doesn't seem offensive to me.
No more so than Cowboys, etc.

The problem is, Blackhawks, Chiefs, Braves, and Indians as team names are offensive to most indigenous/ Native Americans, and that is what matters and why those names need to go.
As for cowboys, I've never heard of a cowboy being offensive of a name like Dallas Cowboys. Until the majority of cowboys object to it, there's no reason that name cannot stand.
“The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man [or woman] who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.”
for what it's worth, i am a blues fan but those red chicago blackhawk sweaters are the best in hockey history.
After the Jets left for Phoenix, i had to decide on a new team. I chose chicago, probably partly for the logo, but also for Roenick and Amonte. I had shirts and other swag. I wore it. beautiful art, absolutely.
Now if only we could get PJ to drop the words ignorant Indians from their evolution song.
Seriously? I mean, how can you compare satire to caricature?
I'm not comparing them.
But if the lyrics said, those ignorant niggers got nothing on me, maybe I wouldn't be the only voice mentioning that using that word isn't okay.
you're right, but Indians is nowhere near the N word in terms of nastiness. they were called indians because of a geographical mistake. it's not a slur. it's just ignorance.
and again, Ed was quoting, not speaking himself in that lyric.
Except “Indians” is not used as a pejorative towards people from India, and when used to refer to Native Americans exudes tremendous ignorance, hence the satire in the writing.
The word Indian in and of itself is not a derogatory or offensive word.
