When I lived in bear country, aka New Jersey (really!), I always wore bells on my running shoes. Unlike coyotes and NJ deer (fearless bastards), bears tend to be people-shy, so the bells let them know I was coming.

Probably need to avoid partying a few days before the full, in November, if I want to hit my goal time.
Had a blast in NYC but didn't sleep much and had many (too many?) beers.  :) )

Was well ahead of pace for the first half....probably too aggressive,  but I pumped myself up to get a good lead on my time to allow for what seems an inevitable bathroom pit stop on longer runs.
This never came to be needed, however I did slow down considerably after about mile 8.
Finished 1 min 08 seconds off PR, which is very solid for where I am in the training.

Was fun and I really enjoyed the first 8-9 miles.  Not so much the rest.

Onward with training....have a long run this week and also a 5k locally.

I live in fear of the pit stop. :o Sounds like a good effort, despite the beers (carb loading!). Good luck with your training.
Yeah, I work my training around potential stops so I am covered when needed but the race day ones can be scary + time consuming.
I'm getting in the hot tub shortly to help with some soreness but otherwise feel great.  Ready to race a 5k on Saturday AM and then do a 14 miles run when I get home.  My legs should love that, since I will go full bore to try and PR on the 5k.  (A big hill in this one .  😀)

The way you can tell black bear scat (aka#2) from grizzly bear scat:
Black bear scat has berry seeds and some fur
Grizzly bear scat has berry seeds, fur and bear bells

Yeah my experience is with black bears not grizzlies.

When I lived and trained in the mountains in Colorado I had to worry about bears, mtn lions, elk, and the occasional moose.

Ok, back from the Austin shows and still recovering from some allergies but now it's time to focus on my December half. Probably not wise to take about 10 days off but hopefully can get back into it with the cooler Carolina weather.

Also, I hike a lot and have had two black bear encounters, both the same - the bear quickly hiding from the human and the human backing off  slowly and going home!  Bells and any other type of loud noise usually will keep them away.

Good luck getting back to it after the break, hope it does drag you down.  I bend over backward to get the runs in around travel but it is a mofo.

  • Went for my 2nd MRI today, Dr wanted to do another since PT made my hip worse, hopefully it provides some direction. It has been over 3 months since my last run, I'm getting pretty frustrated with the lack of healing and no answers yet about what exactly the issue is. I can't even do an exercise or recumbent bike as it irritates it too much.

I can't wait to get back to running, just want some answers to let me know when that might be.

I haven't posted here in a while. Everything for me is status quo. I hope everyone is doing well. I meant to run in Texas, but didn't. I was looking forward to going for a run today, but came home from Texas with Covid. So far it is mild - some sneezing and congestion. No fever. I do have a mild headache that won't go away, but hopefully soon. I guess I am staying home for the next five days. Oh well. It was totally worth it :)

That stinks that you have COVID, hopefully it stays mild

That sucks to not be able to go at it for 3 months!

Well done mate 👍. Amazing what a few beers can do! My brothers stag do was great but we drank so much over the 3 days. Luckily I have 3 weeks (now 2) until my half.

What other races you have this year?

3 day binge drinking!  Glad you had fun.

    5k tomorrow.
October's the Gritty 5k with my son
November is a Run The Bridge 10k and then the Philadelphia Marathon
December is the Elf n Cocoa 5k we ran last year...my son does the Miler and I do the 5k dressed as an elf.

Then if I make it through in good shape I need to think about what 2024 looks like.

    Tomorrow is gonna be "fun"
Meant to pour all day....with +/- 20 mph winds.  (Down from originally projected 35 moh winds)
Running the 5 k will be fun, in any weather, but the balance of the 17 miles on schedule being run after?  That just sounds like a slog.
I'll take solace in the knowledge that most people would not do it.

Speaking of weather: Do you have, or have you tried, waterproof shoes? I've used Brooks' ASR (quick-draining) shoes in the past and really liked them, but for years I balked at getting the Gore-Tex shoes because of the cost and because I'd rather use rain as an excuse to hit the treadmill. ;-) I finally bought my first pair, have yet to use them, but can see them coming in handy. I'm curious to know if you have any or what you or others do to prepare for crappy weather.

I recall one year it was so cold for the Philly Marathon that the water stops became icy and treacherous.

I do have a semi waterproof new balance pair and a goretex new balance pair.
I like the waterproof ones fine, but on long runs my knees really like the new balance fresh foam more so much that I think on long runs I'd rather deal with wet feet.
Shorter runs (10m or less) I'm happy to use the waterproof ones.
The goretex ones feel heavy.  I've probably run less than 50 miles in them.  Not gonna chuck them but they have not been worn since January-ish.

First run back was a short one ahd a half miles, with most of the first quarter being uphill. Felt about how I expected. Glad I didn't sign up for the 10K trail race tomorrow but will still probably try to do 5 on my own tomorrow or Sunday if this rain is still in the area in the morning.

    Great quote.

I pushed through today, in the onset of tropical storm ophelia's impact.

Slow 5k time, but I'm happy with it.  I never really pushed too hard, knowing that I had a long run to do after.

Slow (and extremely wet...may have some blisters to contend with this week) slog through the longer run once I got home.

Oh well, more work in the books.  What doesn't kill us makes us stronger!

Wow. Great effort in the storm. How was the wind? It’s a soggy mess here now as well. I hope the blisters don’t come for you. Now with going to Texas for the shows and having Covid it has been almost two weeks since my last run. I can’t remember any time where I took so much time off between runs. I am afraid it will take me a while to get back to where I was. I guess I will find out. I hope I can run again before Friday.

October the 15th. My long runs for a half don't usually go this high, but I'm trying to find this extra couple of minutes off my time before I get too old 😂

    Wow. That is gorgeous.

On another note tomorrow will be three weeks since my last run. Between my travel to Texas and coming home with Covid, I just haven't been able to do it. I think I will try tomorrow - hopefully it won't take me too long to get back to where I was.
