I don't think being a leader of a country is a very good gig.   Generally the pay is quite a bit lower than if you were a CEO or CFO of medium to large company (or publicly traded company).

The job lacks longevity.   You have to run for election every handful of years, so your under constant thread of being terminated.   Everyone blames you for everything, you can't make people happy, you probably won't even be able to get 50% of people to be happy.

Anything stupid you've done in your life will most likely see the light of day, then get dragged out publicly.

If your an American president there's only so much you can do without the support of Congress.   Congress is in charge of the purse, and also has the power to override a veto.  A president can't introduce law, congress does.  If there's big things you want to do you need to get it passed through two dysfunctional arms of the US government.  Making it really hard to get much done.

I don't think famous people (or most of them) would want to be president.   It's like being famous, but everyone blames you for everything bad :)

I honestly don't think there should be a leader of a country.  How can one person lead something as big and complex as a country?

I might be persuaded to retain the three branches of government in the U.S., but I would want the president to be someone required to have good moral character, the ability to speak well, and be someone who represents the best of what we are, but not someone with a lot of power.  Big decisions that affect the country or even the whole world should not be made by one individual.  Even just the notion of that is ridiculous.

I would also make the executive branch a committee composed- as Lincoln's cabinet was- of people of differing outlooks who are required and willing to work together to come up with logical, doable and fair solutions to national issues.  One of the jobs of this committee of mixed members would be to interview potential presidential candidates and then select that president based on who it is that most fulfills the characteristics I've pointed out above.

    LOL.

It's just another one of my far-fetched ideas.  In the real world, in real time, I'll be happy to have a president named Biden!

Gotta get there first though.  Shit's getting real, real weird with these freeways shutdowns and what not.  No matter what happens, I'm super nervous about the coming days.  I live in Trump loving Hell Dorado County, California and going out to do anything this week will be nerve-wracking.  Hell, just being home is nerve wracking.

So we're at the end now.  How do you guys grade Biden and his campaign? I give him strong grades.  He was good in both debates,  no major gaffes,  stayed focused on a positive message,  didn't get into the mud. The commercials I get here in Virginia are excellent,  particularly one i saw the other night with all the generals supporting him.

I feel like the campaign did its job.  The money was raised,  I was contacted by Biden,  Warner,  and Spanberger multiple times.  Now it's up to the people.
I don’t think it matters. This election is about Trump or no Trump. Biden could have been replaced by a brick wall and the results would probably be the same.
To an extent, it is a referendum on Trump, but I still think Obama would beat Trump and Gore would not. I’d say the campaign is a B.  He did a good job laying out plans, but I honestly think he should have gotten in the mud more and brought up more of Trump’s mobbed-up past and his family’s profiteering.
has he ever done that sort of campaigning?

    So would the GOP.
At some point we have to stop fearing the GOP and just run a positive message and control the narrative.  Take the ball right out of their court. They only have power because for whatever reason they have been given the ability to control the discourse.
What I’m trying to say is she’d be a poor candidate for the democrats. Not that she’d make it through the primary in 2024, but hypothetically.
I know same as I was hypothetically saying that I would support non US born citizens hypothetically running for preZ
Oh yeah that’s right...she wouldn’t even be eligible.
This thread is going to move so fast in the next two days it’s gonna be very hard to keep track of what the topic du jour is.

I have been pretty positive about this whole election the last couple of weeks but with 32 hours to go till polls close in the east I am starting to think that we are in for a shitshow of an election night/week ahead. If it really does come down to PA and it takes days for Biden to win a win is a win but the civil unrest is going to be off the charts. Win AZ or FL and it is over for Trump. That is what is needed imo on election night.

When will news outlets "call" states, like PN and FL etc? What time?

Need to know how early I should wake up, have my breakfast to 4 more years or 4 years.

We have to be able to go to bed on Tuesday (maybe early WED AM for some on the east cost) knowing Biden won. If not, Trump wins the ongoing controversy with Barr and a court system that's almost as devoted as his rally attendees.  I don't like that prospect, given that PA is probably not going to be called.

Pennsylvania will be a couple of days after with the way they are counting mail in votes. If Biden is close after election night and all the polls are counted he should have it. I am expecting FL and AZ to announce in the am so more like breakfast time where you are.

The problem is that the working class despises our positions on social issues.  So what do you do?  Do you advocate for your actual constituency, or change your social stances?

much of it is an older generation of union workers, working class, etc... who reject modern society and technology.  They think that we can reverse course to 1955 where an entire town (white males) works at a plant, goes to the same church.  can leave their doors unlocked, allow pies to cool on a window sill, not worry about media and stimulus 24/7.  John Wayne.  No "queers".  You can tell your neighbor a racist joke.  Simplicity.  These people were/are seduced by the whole 'Make America Great Again" slogan.

    Them, and the anti-abortion zealots.

Yes, it would be wonderful to go back to simpler times.  But you cant.  We have to adapt with the rest of the world or we fade off and fall behind.

I think you change the social stances. Or at least, lighten up on them a little. Think back to the weeks and months after George Floyd. Fight against racism and strive for equality? Good. Suggest that all white people are racist due to the sins of past generations? Not so good. And that sort of rhetoric was definitely happening.
