It was clearly his actual debate strategy. What's worse is that he was terrible at it. He didn't pick his spots and you could argue that the constant stream of it let Biden off the hook. Although I think the media so far has done a good job of not comparing Biden to Trump in how he handled the debate. Trump talked about nothing as usual and Biden made a few good points while also botching a few questions, which I've seen criticism of him for from multiple neutral, left leaning and right leaning sources. Trump's tactic was clearly to try and divide the voters on the left by constantly mentioning that Biden was losing the far left and socialists with his denial of the Green Deal and defund the police messages.
As already mentioned, the real goal for Trump seemed to be to get people to stay home on election day and delegitimize mail in voting. My take away, he fueled more people to vote to get him the fuck out of office.
