I watched Michelle's speech this morning.  It was quite good!

you all are probably right about the obamas. why open yourself up to all of the bad parts of public life again?

just wait for the gop convention. they are having that family from STL that pulled the guns on the BLM protesters. seems like they are having everybody that got canceled be a guest of some kind.

imagine all the hatred that is going to come out of the mouths of the speakers there. it is going to be a complete 180 from this week.
Isn't the GOP convention just going to be all be afraid, fear, hate, be afraid, fear? That wouldn't be attractive to me at all. I listened to the entire broadcast last night while I played a video game and I felt good when it was over. :)

I actually thought last night went pretty well. I liked the addition of Kasich and the other never-Trumpers.  I'm not exactly a Kasich fan but he understands the gravity of the current situation and cares about maintaining the Republic. He's not party-first and I respect that.  They did a good job painting Biden as personable with the train rides and his interaction with the conductors and passengers. I liked Bernie's part, which acknowledged my key concern (authoritarianism) and where he finally said what his followers refuse to: Biden isn't perfect but Trump is worse; far worse. Michelle's was OK.  I thought she might have touched on too many points, almost.

But overall, they did a good job on taking digs at Trump, showing broad support for Biden, and saying good things about Biden, his plans, and his history.

The only things I did not like were the music (It just sort of was something to sit through) and that Eva Longoria was the host; nothing against her, but they should try to limit how front-and-center the Hollywood element is.  Not sure who it should have been (because it would be weird without one). The Dems are in a tough position having to do this first.

But, yeah the Hollywood thing isn't their best foot forward.

I think Longoria has been deeply involved in party politics for a while now, especially in getting out the vote  and increased representation for the Latin/Hispanic population. Her hosting made sense to me.

With that said, I agree with those who said the thing was boring, flat, and awkward. I saw  a preview of tonight's schedule and it seems like the speakers are tasked to address more platform specific topics (voting rights, urban renewal among the ones I remember). Last night felt like the intro paragraph to a 4 paragraph essay:  Here's the general three point case for Biden (economy, equality, corona). Tuesday and Wednesday we'll get into the details, and then Thursday we'll go back to the general conclusion with Biden's speech. Maybe??

i think you nailed it. this is literally all they have to run on.

    criminal coronavirus response
    economy in the tank
    alienated our allies
got americans banned from traveling to other countries
tore up the iran deal and making us less safe
    gutting the usps
using unmarked secret police to disappear protesters
trying to gut obamacare in a pandemic with no plan for replacement
    racial animus.

is there anything good they can run on at all besides tax cuts for billionaires?

All you have to do is look at the list of people they have lined up to talk next week. Again, it's not about growing his base. It's about making people like Sean Hannity happy and firing up the 30% knuckleheads who would vote for him anyway. It will be full on culture war nonsense next week.

I watched good chunks of the convention on Monday and Wednesday and I think it's been solid overall.  The shots at Trump were unprecedented (particularly from the Obamas), but then again, so are the times. Harris did a good job; they've done a good job showing a broad group of supporters, showing Joe as very human and caring (which I believe, I just wish he was less creepy about it), hinting toward actual plans (without saying too much), and reminding us of the dangers of four more years.

The GQP event should be quite a contrast.  I don't think they can really go for the "let's show Trump as a human" route.  First, it's not why people like him and and, more importantly, it would not be the least bit believable.  The Dems had the Obamas; they're going to have Scott Baio and the St. Louis Gun Couple. Here will be the themes, I suppose:
    • Socialism!  Biden/Harris is the most radical candidacy ever (laughable)
    • Black MAGA-hat wearers.  Candice Owens, I assume.
    • Biden's chaotic America (complete with film shot in Trump's America).
    • LAW AND ORDER!
    • Media is unfair to me.
    • Jobs, Jobs, Jobs!
    • Election fraud!
    • Qanon theories; without mention of Qanon.
They simply can't paint him as relatable.  He's a miserable, loathsome ass.  Hell, 35% of the country has an unprecedented level of devotion to this man but nobody says like they did of W, that "he's the guy you'd like to have a beer with."  Unfortunately, that's not Biden, either.  Man, someone like Obama would run up the score on this loathsome clown."

Don't forget all the Clinton hate. Hillary, Bill, Clinton Foundation, as if there wouldn't have already been any indictment at all if there was any reason, even a slight one. It's going to be all hate and you must be afraid of this, that and the others...

Since no separate thread about DNC:

    1) I thought the first night was meh.  It was tough to watch much really.  Some good, lots of boring.
    2) I thought the second night was better.  I liked and hated the roll call all at the same time.  Some were just ridiculous and some looked like hostage videos.  But overall the night seemed to flow pretty smoothly.  Except "Delaware PASSES!!!!!!" Hahahaha was so funny.
    3) Night 3 was really quite spectacular.  Great format, great focus in issues (even if you don;t agree with the issue position, they were mostly all well done).  Great speech by Obama, man he got old fast.  I really liked Hillary's speech actually except her eyes were freaking me out. ,la was very good...a little awkward simply due to Covid and the sparse "crowd".  I wondered at first why she kept looking away from the camera to the sides.  Thought it was just for TV till they panned back.

The only thing I thought was a swing and a miss was the immigrant family story.  Coming to the US for medical care that they "deserve".  Plays to the base I guess but I thought it gave a talking point to the GOP viewpoint.

Very interesting and over all I think whoever organizaed it knocked it out of the park.  Not easy to do, and considering everything, it's about a 9/10 which is in reality a 10/10 in this environment.

Like you, I kind of wish there was a separate DNC thread but since there isn't, I'll post here.

I hear that Andrew Yang was going to speak tonight so I found a link that works on my slow ISP and was able to watch, hooray!

Yang was pretty good- OK, decent start.

But wait... what's this?  Some ditzy actor making lame-ass jokes?  I thought we were serious about winning this thing.  WTF?

And then it gets worse!  Some kid getting his face wiped the way an elephant ass might get wiped, and then he cites the pledge of allegiance.  Are you kidding me?

And then a most wretched rendition of that horrid song... you know the one.  Somebody give me a bucket!

If this lame approach is the best the DNC can do well, then, well... oh fuck it.  I have a margarita waiting for me.  Off goes the stupid TV show!

JLD was terrible to start. Felt like she got better as the night went on but I may have just tuned her out.

I enjoyed Booker and the Beaten Bunch. I really did like a bunch of these candidates this time around.

On the other hand...Mike Bloomberg was my cue to take the dog out for a walk.

Sleepy Woke Joe is clearly demented and his hair was messy, his liver spots were too pronounced, his nose looks funny and his chin dimple was off center. I can’t look at him for four years.

I don’t understand why the Biden’s and ,la and doggie didn’t just get tested so they could embrace etc. it was weird. I guess trying to role model. But seemed weird.

That was Joe Biden at close to if not his best
