Washington Post reporter snips the picture of a 55 gallon drum and would like to convince you that rubbing alcohol costs $2k. No idea why that Gallup poll came out like it did!

People are not literal enough with the word "ignorant." It's often not an insult but an observation.

I don't watch CNN or care to start watching it now, but it sounds like perhaps Anderson Cooper meant it quite literally and that the internet took it as an insult on the mayor.

I don't care enough to watch even 10 seconds of Anderson Cooper to clarify this, but for those of you who do watch, maybe bear in mind the literal meaning of the word ignorant before getting it twisted.
I think maybe I started this Anderson Cooper thing. It was an EXAMPLE in response to someone else's point that the media is out of control.

My concern is way larger than the "both side-ism" people like to engage in. I'm concerned that our democracy depends upon a responsibly functioning free press, and it's totally out of control. This is what I care about when I choose my news sources, courtesy of the late Jim Lehrer, one of the best role models out there (may he RIP). I've bolded the ones especially pertinent to some of the responses I've received to the AC 360 example I gave:

    Jim Lehrer's Rules for Journalism

    • Do nothing I cannot defend.
    • Cover, write and present every story with the care I would want if the story were about me.
    • Assume there is at least one other side or version to every story.
    • Assume the viewer is as smart and as caring and as good a person as I am. Assume the same about all people on whom I report.
    • Assume personal lives are a private matter until a legitimate turn in the story absolutely mandates otherwise.
    • Carefully separate opinion and analysis from straight news stories, and clearly label everything.
    • Do not use anonymous sources or blind quotes except on rare and monumental occasions. No one should be able to attack another anonymously.
    • Finally, I am not in the entertainment business.
I'm not sure all of those rules necessarily apply to AC360 and the like -- they don't purport to be straight news shows.

And yet you’re claiming the press is totally out of control based upon a false report or post that Anderson Cooper called the mayor of Las Vegas an idiot. He didn’t.

I’m not a journalist so I don’t have to assume everyone is as smart as me. I’ve made the observation that there’s a lot of stupid viewers out there. Do you doubt that?

How has Anderson Cooper not lived up to Jim Lehrer’s ideals?

27% herd immunity in NY with 2.7million positive tests for antibodies. Extrapolated globally thats over 2 billion Rona cases.  This thing is 99.999% harmless.  Lets fucking get shit open.  This is the dumbest shit ever.
Wrong. You often need >50% immunity in the population for herd immunity. For SARS-2 that threshold may be as high as ~80%, a larger number than was even projected to get the virus at one point.

15,740 dead in New York State.   So fucking dumb.
The downfall of western civilization vs. 50,000 deaths.  Seems legit.  GO on though.  Talk about how important everyone is in the scheme of human history.
    Cool. I volunteer you.

PS - You don't post much, but you could post less.
You know the only way to get herd immunity is to leave your fucking house?  Me leaving my house along with thousands of others won't cut it.  They need to open it up.  Those who are afraid can stay home.  Free will.  It's a big thing in America.
Free will doesn't give you a right to endanger others, which is what happens when you and your buddies refuse to stay home.

So you're saying AC doesn't need to assume his viewers are smart? Or that he's not in the entertainment business? Or that when he tells a mayor she is "ignorant" or an "idiot" (pick your synonym), he doesn't have a responsibility to just add the simple words, "in my opinion . . . " ? Okay. Thanks for sharing.

I was just thinking, while momentarily doing something else, that this forum actually is just a different form of what we see on the networks. Shifting attention spans, gotcha moments, using memes and soundbites to narrow ideas. Ugh. I've thought it before and I'll say it now -- I need a new hobby.

Returning to your last point, if I can be pedantic for a moment (and far be it from me to miss an opportunity for that), I think you’re using the phrase “free will” incorrectly. Philosophers and religious scholars have debated the concepts of free will vs predetermination for centuries, and while the issue is not yet settled, one thing that people do agree on is that if free will exists then all humans have it. Not just Americans.

I think the concept you’re reaching for is more like “legally protected rights”, which of course come with responsibilities.

I just watched the video of the Idaho woman who was arrested for "taking her kids to a playground"
She was being ridiculous.  Kept blathering about the Constitution and blah blah blah.  They recorded it and uploaded it thinking it makes the police look bad but it really doesn't.  They were patient and understanding and she pushed until they had enough. Then she insisted she be arrested, and acted shocked when they obliged her lol

    yep. he actually said it.

he also asked the doctors to investigate use of ultraviolet light to be shined in the body through the ear, or the mouth, or somewhere else.

how long until someone shows up in the ER with an ultraviolet light stuck in their cornhole?
