June 15, 2020 — It’s a
sobering reality that the surge in mobility is driving up transmission of the
coronavirus. Fourteen states reported an alarming 40% increase in cases and
hospitalizations. The CDC is projecting 140,000 deaths by July 4th, and Harvard
Medical predicts 200,000 by early fall. Across the globe, the U.S. jumped 36%
while the most notable European countries saw declines. Yet as individuals we
can still do something. Practice social/physical distancing; limit the number
and duration of close contacts; wash your hands frequently; and wear a face
covering. Medical journals cite the chance of transmission without a face mask
is 17.4%, while that fell to 3.1% when a face mask was worn. Compelling!
And the people who claim a face mask "does nothing."
Damn, I thought I had missed some kind of coronavirus bombshell. Thankfully this forum is the extent of my social media intake, I don't think I could handle any more positivity on a daily basis.

Whenever I post an article with a vaccine or therapeutic update, it gets a reply or two if that. When someone posts about not wearing masks or shares shitty data about death/case counts in an attempt to make a stupid political point it goes on for pages.

It seems to come in waves. If the right people are around and engaged, you can sustain some good conversations. A couple wackos are always around and it's just a matter of whether they're being drowned out or if they've taken over temporarily with help from new wackos.

I find new whackos very entertaining. Don't speak poorly of them.
Yep, things are going to get nasty because people aren't dying fast enough anymore so the demand to return to normal will only become more fervent. We are in a tough position right now because if for some reason the virus doesn't see a resurgence due to reopening, the attitude among the non-believers against science will only increase and gain traction that it shouldn't. There are enough self proclaimed experts on here alone to gauge how many among the world population think their "common sense" is better than expert opinions. These are also the same people who like Trump. It's no surprise and is easily comparable to the already decades old battle about climate change that has never gained full support. Nothing you or any article you link (especially from the media, experts or national health community) will change their minds. They have it all figured out. We're the sheep.
My parents have this same stupid thinking and bitch about our Democratic governor ruining the state. I love my parents to death, but honestly, they need to get it or they'll never figure it out. Unfortunately, sometimes something tragic has to happen in order for people, and society at large, to change for the better. Apparently, 100,000 strangers (for most anyway) doesn't mean shit.
How many lives could of been saved if we were told to wear masks early on? Instead of being told it does nothing? Nothing makes me angrier then when someone tries to come in my store with no mask. I have zero tolerance or patience for that.
I totally agree! It's such an easy thing to do. Those like you who work in a store are there for hours. People who come in to shop are generally there for just minutes. Asking people to wear a mask is not a lot to ask. I hope must of you customers are smart and caring enough to do that.
When the pandemic hit, I stopped working at the bookstore and just do my book sales on line now. I'm fortunate to basically be able to do mostly be retired (and certainly old enough to do so.)
Ha. Some lady said “but it’s uncomfortable “. I swear. A grown adult woman. I was shocked. Like I want to wear one for 10 hours. I have not tolerance for it. No mask, no entry. Period.
Masks have been proven that they don't make a difference...plus where were everyone's masks last year when over half a million people died of the flu...effing hypocrites
Go ahead go out & about hang out shake hands hug each other, if your so sure and believe all the death has all been made up !

I know those who need to read this most won't, but statements about the flu are just baffling. Compare it all you want, but also make sure you look at the deaths section. Seems to be a little more alarming than the flu.

I personally am compelled to challenge misinformation (unless it's total batshit crazy). If I see legit information I usually read it, take it in and move on. So please don't think it's been ignored. I read almost everything here.
I come here mostly to share and learn new information.

It is not a positive subject, but there are positive developments that tend to get lost in all of the back and forth as pjl44 stated earlier. It is a very tricky situation right now with social distancing seemingly being given a pass, it appears the effectiveness of mask wearing is our only hope as far as virus spread at the protests. I do worry that even though it appears the majority of protesters are wearing masks it must be difficult to avoid exposure by contact given the scale, and enforcing mandatory social distancing would only be seen as an anti-movement tactic. Then you have those in areas all over the country who are taking little to no precautions in their everyday lives, we are quite literally between a rock and a hard place with plenty of virus blame to go around. I don't know what the solution is, but tearing each other down does not seem like the answer. I’ll continue to take precautions for my family and myself, it is after all the only thing I can control.

Yeah, the protesting is a complex situation. On the one hand, it's very understandable that people are protesting. On the other hand, I think you're right- cases are sure to spike. And the same with opening up of the economy. To some extent, that has to be done. Yet the risk goes up along with it.
I guess the reason I'm feeling discourage is that yesterday, we drove up to Camino to our favorite remote (i.e., very safe) walking trail and drove through town on the way up. All up and down Main St. I saw clusters of people without masks on. It's not a long street, but on the two blocks we drove on I only noticed one guy (who was by himself) wearing a mask. The pleasant weather and weekend combination seems to lead people to relaxing their precautions. I dread what the future statistics may show.
But I should also at least acknowledge that right now, the infection rates in Calif. are very stable. We watched governor Newsom at noon give his updates and the charts he showed look promising... for now. I think the reason he is back to doing the updates on TV might indicate some concern. We shall see. Hoping things stay stable!

You make a good point. I'm usually the first one to say that half of what I post is more for the lurkers so I should have gone with my own theory on that one.

This is the same CDC that was mixing virus tests results with antibody test results, so I’d take this with a huge grain of salt. >5.5% mortality rate seems very high and likely false. Key factors are unreported cases, asymptomatic cases, etc.
I’m by no means a “virus is a democratic hoax” guy, but I cannot take these statistics as being highly accurate. I will continue to take proper precautions though.

Oh, I get it. They even preface that about the flu, but either way, the death toll still stands no matter how many cases there have been. If anything, I think all of the numbers about Covid are probably below the actual reported. The death rate will be lower than what it stands at, but still significantly higher than the flu just based on the stats posted above. That's 6 months of flu statistics opposed to just around 3 for Covid with extreme safety measures in place in many parts of the country for the last few months.

It's sad when people can't be civil with each other. I have used this thread to keep up with what has been happening with coronavirus outside of Ireland. This whole issue has turned into a political one somehow. I believe that it is a human issue, that has effected every one of us somehow.

The whole situation is sad. Like most things in the U.S. though, it all goes into the toxic wasteland of American politics. Everything is spun and turned into a pissing match to fit an agenda. Hopefully things are better for you in Ireland than they are here.
