The climbing season is now over.  So let's hope Nepal develops better regulations and issues fewer permits...
let's also hope that no child goes hungry tonite.  not going to happen.
maybe you should look up the definition of hope... ;):o

"Hope is not the conviction that things will turn out well.  Hope the the conviction to do what makes sense no matter how things turn out."
    -Vaclav Havel
Then why do we say "I hope you feel better", etc.?  It can be something which we do on someone's behalf.  I guess I do, anyway - it's something to aim for.

I hope I've articulated this well.  Ha.
Different kinds of hope, maybe?  Taking action or wishing well.

I hope my recycling helps the planet = doing what makes sense by taking action.

I hope you feel better = wishing someone well.

I think there may be other kinds of hope.   I hope I can remember what they are, LOL.

I guess by definition you're right! It's not my favourite quote, but it's true that ideas don't generate change - ideas with actions attached do.

True...and I try to do my small part - common sense shit: recycling, no littering, my husband drives a muscle car so perhaps that's an indulgence, but it's been put to good and fairly responsible use in the years since he bought it, all the regular things.

Some accomplish greater feats in this realm and that's wonderful.  I'm just doing what I can.  Every individual's tiny dent makes a difference.

Further proof that many humans, even those who seek the wonders of beautiful, high mountains, have utter disregard for nature.  This boggles my mind- a rowing machine abandoned on the top of France's highest mountain, Mount Blanc?  Four kilograms of chewing gum removed from a single mountain?  Utterly disgusting behavior!  Hikers that pull this kind of shit should be chained to a rock like Prometheus at the top of the mountain and have their livers pecked out by eagles.

Also, leave it better than you found it - i.e., take out some of the garbage that you find when you hike.

    Yes!

That's the first thing (and repeated each outing) we were taught in scouts- pack in in, pack it out, and leave the site cleaner than it was when you arrived.  When I lived up in Washington, whenever I took my young nephews out to the spit along the Strait of Juan de Fuca, we came back with bags of garbage we picked up.  They were really cool about sort of making a game of it and any cans or bottles they found they got to keep the money when we cashed them in at the recycling center.  And we had fun!

That's all the environmental movement has is hope...there is no plan outside of world leaders holding more climate conferences flying all kinds of people on their luxury jets.

hat difference what thread I posted in.  Its the same concept...those ignorant mountaineers are polluting Everest and have been for years.  How 'bout this, instead of wasting money on climate conferences maybe they should see how much $$$ it would take for Nepal to shut down the mountain on their side for few years and get the mountain cleaned...as for the Chinese side...FUCK CHINA...

Sorry, not meaning to push your buttons, Meltdown.  It just sounded like something that maybe was meant for one of the other environment threads.

Telling China to fuck off probably won't lead to any constructive measures.  But maybe boycotting their plastic crap would?

As for the climate conferences- I kind of agree.  I mean, what is there to talk about any more?  Now if the conferences were all about setting into motion ACTIONS, actually DOING SOMETHING, that would be useful.

You are not pushing my buttons.  Unless we take action now, we stand no chance of saving this planet.  And I've stated that we all know what needs to be done...yet all that really happens is they hold another climate conference.  What happens after the Paris accord?  Many articles have stated that likely only 2 countries will meet the targets?  Personally, I believe the world is just going to get hot.   I live in Southern Ontario, I am only staying in the area to keep an on Dad...I am all he has in the area...then I am moving North.  The last 4 summers have been toasty.

I have a small carbon footprint.  My house is about the size of a 2 bedroom apartment, I cut the grass with a rechargeable lawnmower, drive a 4cyl Jeep, walk when I can, recycle...etc.

Where I live is getting terrible...I can not believe the amount of driving oversized pickups and living in oversized homes...really do you need a $60 000 truck to take you to your job that does not involve the need for a truck.  Just silly.  Not to mention that all you are doing is making the oil companies richer...

Oh man, same here!  BIG pickup trucks everywhere.  I call them R.O.A.T.S.- Ridiculously Oversized American Trucks-- (R.O.C.T.S., I suppose, in Canada)   And a majority of the time it's men and women driving alone in these behemoths to work or to the grocery store.  We lease a space in a parking lot near work where I wedge my Prius between two mongo pickup trucks-- and these guys never have anything in the truck beds- they mostly are for commuting.  Ridiculous!

I hope so.  I have to admit to feeling skeptical about these talks.  Haven't we done this before?  Has anything changed?  Do people really need some politician to tell them to stop screwing Mother Earth?  (I'm pretty sure I know your answer!)

On the other hand, if they come through with some strong measures, it sure can't hurt.  But then we need to stop bull shitting and start doing.  We need more environmental warriors.  I'm all for peacemakers, but when the life of the planet is at stake, we need more warriors-   people with voices, strong pens, strong commitment to change, massive action.

What do you mean by ban plastic world wide? Not a complete bad I assume. Just a ban on single use items like bags and cups?
Because we wouldn’t even have computers and phones without plastic.
