My sense is that this is an "Off" year for the band and next year ; being a U.S. Presidential Election year will be an "On" year with an Album released followed by a tour hell bent on keeping Trump from being re-elected. I had front row at Fenway Night Two and spoke to a friend who knows Jeff well and spoke to him that day. He mentioned Jeff said it would be a long time before they played live again. So , the end is not near. Things are just quiet in the PJ world right now.

Overtly Political pearl jam doesn't really exist anymore.
I see bands as having two sides. The studio side and the live side. We've all seen it with many legendary bands of days gone bay. The studio side starts to wane, but it's ok because the live side still goes strong.
I like that Pearl Jam never feels the need to break up then make up. They don't do large press conferences to announce hiatus'. If they're not into it they take a brake. When they're into it they go out and hit the road.
I don't really see it stopping. I always assumed if they got too old to rock out that we'd get acoustic tours or something
Except the live side isn't still going strong either. I personally believe there is something "wrong" with Eddie. He's not creating anymore and hasn't for a long time, while all the other members are, elsewhere. I don't know if what is going on with him is good with him or bad, but something's definitely up. Musicians of his caliber don't stop producing like this for no reason at all. But anyway, unless EV does an interview where he literally says straight up what the deal is, we'll never know. And we know that interview isn't happening, lol.
Can’t be too much wrong, he’s about to do a solo tour. All jokes aside I understand where you’re coming from. Let’s hope Ed (and his loved ones) are great and the band can reconvene in the studio shortly.
The idea of them calling it a day stresses me out. The idea of a final tour and the mad scramble for everyone getting tickets. The idea of the final shows inevitably being in Seattle, probably 2-3 nights, and trying to be there for them drives me nuts.
Been telling my wife we just need to start setting money aside for travel, tickets, and lodging for the day when PJ hangs it up.

WHY DID I EVEN OPEN THIS POST!?
Most going away tours are 3 years long these days (see Elton John). Motley Crue played every second night for 2 years even though Mick Mars is something like 2 inches shorter than 20 years ago due to scoliosis. You likely have plenty of time to plan.

I didn't mean physically wrong (although his voice is obviously an issue now). I meant creatively or something more along those lines, that would explain why he doesn't actually produce any new music now or work with other people a lot, while everyone else does.

I'd be completely shocked if they actually decided to do a big retirement announcement and an advertised final tour. That just really doesn't seem like something they'd do.

(Bryan Singer, 1995) “The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn’t exist. And like that – poof – he’s gone!” For those like myself who've been around since the beginning it might be easier to get what I mean, for those newer, you too will understand if not now, in time... PJ never quits, but slowly walks away in the tune of a good friend so at some time down the road we can all collectively come back together again as if we were never apart for that long at all...
I still think it's all part of the plan, it would make sense to wait and put out an album and tour next year to coincide with their 30th anniversary... as long and as frustrating as the wait will be, everything just seems to lead to this conclusion... so 2020, 30th anniversary, new album, 30th anniversary tour, not to mention whatever other 30th anniversary exclusives they may have, and then there's all the 30th anniversary merch, it just all makes sense... and maybe they'll use this time to get us those last two holiday singles... in the meantime, side projects and merch is all i see for 2019, and maybe if we're lucky some more ed solo shows in the US, it's better than nothing..

I don't think they even know for sure so how would any of us know? Maybe Dorothy can find out for us:
"Don't give in to the lies. Don't give in to the fear. Hold on to the truth. And to hope."
If the goodbye tour is their last financial go at it, I believe the band would advertise the hell out of a final tour.
They don't seem like the kind of band to do a farewell tour. Just like they aren't the kind of band to hold a press conference and publicly announce every time they're going on hiatus.
I tend to think they'll keep tour doing tours here and there. They seem like the kind of band if someones not into it, they break for a while, and when everyone's into it the reconvene and do something. Sometimes that makes things a bit sparse. I suppose I have a hard time seeing the band officially calling it quits. I always figured they were like the stones, springsteen, metallica, or U2 and keep it rolling as long as they could.
Five Longest gaps between albums: 1t. Pearl Jam (5y 6m) 1t. U2 (same) 3. U2 (4y 3m) 4t. U2 (4y 1m) 4t. Pearl Jam (same)
U2 has 3 gaps equal to or longer than Pearl Jam’s 2nd longest gap. Funny how U2 isn’t a legacy band or calling it quits or at the end of the road or not interested in making music or saying farewell or Bono is off on his own, etc etc.
(And I already know what he responses are gonna be to this. Believe me, I know what all the counterpoints are, and it’s nothing that hasn’t been said 1000 times already. I just thought this was an interesting observation I realized & thought I’d share it.)

I really hope the next forthcoming U2 album is awesome because I wasn't a fan of the last one and that Bono plays some US dates on his upcoming solo tour.
I see too much reading between lines, and way too much 2 + 2 = 5 stuff here.
It takes me back to the old message pit when they released binaural - and Parting ways was the band saying goodbye. That was 18 years ago.
I'll quietly look forward to the next tour
